Title: Cartoon Time with the kid...
Post by: Sister Grace on August 27, 2008, 06:02:03 PM
Like all parents, I wind up watching quite a bit of cartoons. Most children's cartoons make me grind my teeth anymore. Don't get me wrong; I really enjoy animation and claymation but most of what's on television anymore is scraping the bottom of the barrel so to speak. So to all the parents out there, what cartoons do you watch with your kids that you actually enjoy? So far Isabela and I snuggle up and watch Ben 10: Alien Force and the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack (which is just sick enough to be hilarious). Also, Chowder isn't too bad, not one of my favorites but I've seen worse.
However, when she turns on Johnny Test or the new George of the Jungle, I suddenly have dishes to do or homework I have suddenly remembered.

My kids are pretty much out of the cartoon stage....but they were really into POKEMON (which I HATED) and DRAGON BALL Z (which I found I  enjoyed.) They also loved Sponge Bob,Ren and Stimpy (Yay!) and...well...most anything, really. Not really a cartoon, but they loved the POWER RANGERS too...(I found it a guilty pleasure) and Beetle Borgs (ARGH!!!!!). Now Jed watches rap music and Pimp My Ride. Eddie...Eddie watches ANYTHING goofy. He still likes cartoons....mostly superhero and robot stuff.

My children watch very little television.  When they do, it's usually something like "Arthur" or "Cyberchase" on PBS.

We don't have cable, so when we are somewhere that we can get it, they do enjoy "Spongebob."

We get old animated shows from Netflix for them - "Looney Tunes," "Flintstones," etc.  I recently introduced them to "Fat Albert," and my daughter fell in love with this one!!

As for most 'modern' cartoons that are currently broadcast?  No way, no how.

Mostly if they watch anything, they watch movies.

In total, they probably watch less than 10 hours combined movies/tv per week - some weeks FAR less than 10 hours.  Of the things they watch, I can sit through most of it.

My son loves Curious George which I actually find relaxing to watch.  I'm thinking its William H Macy's narration.   For awhile he was obsessed with Go Diego Go which I quickly learned to detest. I always thought that having a kid who plays with anacondas and jaguars is simply a bad idea.  I can honestly say my wife HATES Caliou. I can't say I blame her mainly due to his obnoxious voice.

I don't have any kids but I do have  2 nephews. The youngest who is almost 4 has recently gotten positively hooked on the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons from the early 90's.  He also really loves the movie The Incredibles and I think that he watches the movie Cars every single day a couple of times.  He also loves both Toy Story flicks.

My other nephew who is turning 11 in September loves pretty much anything as long as it's animated. All he watches is Cartoon Network it seems like. But I recently showed him The Tick animated series and he now says that's his favorite cartoon now.  I also got him addicted to Batman: the Animated Series from the 90's as well.

I personally don't have kids at the moment, but do watch cartoons.  Good ones though.  Of the current crop, I love SpongeBob,  Ninja Turtles, and only a handful of others.

I know a kid about 5 who loves the old Ninja Turtles but doesn't really like the new one.  I quite like both, but for different reasons myself.  The Tick is awesome as well.

I have some Ren and Stimpy dvd's, as well as Power Rangers.  I was quite the fan of both in my younger years.  I liked Beetle Borgs at the time, but have since changed my opinion after seeing clips on YouTube.  Not really.  I liked Beetle Borgs and still do.  Have you ever watched their cheesy counterparts: Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills or Super Human Samaurai Syber Squad?  The Syber Squad show had Tim Curry on it.

i agree its cool to turn them on to things from our pasts. Bela really likes fraggle rock, but we've only got one VHS tape of them and she's played it over and over. I agree also about the idocracy of deigo and cauiou (sp?), that kid is the demon spawn of davey jones' locker.
I dread that when we first get to florida that it may be awhile before we can get the dish/cable hooked up. Personally, I don't watch that much television but I'm sure Bela will freak at first...

We have the DVR box that records so we are loaded with taped episodes of George and Diego.  Lately my son has been leaning towards Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  Disney is a love/hate thing with me. After my disastrous vacation to Disney World this year, I haven't really been tolerating their stuff well.

If you don't mind, how old were you when you watched it?  I was young then, probably like, 10ish or so, so Flabber (the blue guys name), fit right in with me then.  But, I was a kid.  Nowadays, I would say yeah, he was pretty annoying.

I more or less liked the monsters more, the Frankenstein, the WOlf man, etc. who lived in the house with him.

Power Rangers was the better show of those live action/Japanese transfers that happened at the time.  Especially the first 5-6 years, when it was an overall plot that held the seasons together.  Nowadays each season is self contained, which detracts from it becoming a phenomenon again, I feel.

Revealing my age: my kids are grown and out of the house now. But they (mostly) had pretty good taste in cartoons and TV shows, shows that were really well written, a lot better than most network sitcoms. Doug, Rugrats, Garfield, Kablam!, Rocko's Modern Life, Angry Beavers, Hey Arnold were all shows they loved that I enjoyed watching over their shoulders. I think almost all of that was Nickolodeon. Our TV spent a lot of time on Nick, and then later on Nick at Night as my younger daughter rediscovered *my* past. Daria and "Beavis and Butthead" on MTV when they got older. I loved Daria, hated B & B though I was tricked into a laugh sometimes.

That reminds me of the fact that my aunt hates her grandkids watching Caliou because it's a bad influence.  We don't want our kids jumping into puddles on purpose now do we?

Surprisingly, my dad enjoyed watching Spongebob with me in the mornings a while back, unfortunatley I've pretty much stopped watching because I never see any new episodes.

Well...I was 35. I'm 46 now.  My kids were 5 and 3. They liked the VR Troopers too. The one with the dog. And the very irritating theme song..."WE ARE! WE ARE VR VR VR !!!" ACK! the horror...the horror...

VR Troopers had a dog?  I didn't like that show as much, although the video game was excellent.  I know Masked Rider had a thing called Ferbie, which was played by Verne Troyer.

Nickelodeon was a very good network for a long time.  I spent many a days watching: Ren and Stimpy, Clarissa Explains it All, Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, Space Cases, Doug, Rugrats, and All That, amongst others.

Shame it's kinda gone downhill, save for a couple of shows.

Not a parent myself (though I'm 25 years old), but I babysat until August 1997 for two different groups of kids - one group was 3 boys, ages (in 1997) 11, 10, and 8.  We watched alot of Kids WB and Fox Kids - they were Power Ranger fanatics (which I loathed - I was 12 in 1995 when I started watching them, and they were obsessed with it!), but we also watched the Superman cartoon that started in 1996 on WB (the one with Tim Daly - which was the only way I liked Superman back then (and the way I still do now), and not b/c it was Tim Daly's voice - I loved the animation), Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain (which I watched at home as well), and usually, I could entice them to watch Nickelodeon cartoons after Fox Kids and Kids WB was over.

The other kids I sat for were a brother and sister, in 1996, they were 10 and 11 years old.  These kids were my favorites, because they LOVED The Simpsons, and we watched it when I was there on weeknights (they lived a few houses down from me, and I watched them on weeknights from 5 until about 8 or 9 a few nights a week during school, and then from about 10 am until 4 or 5 during the summer) - they were old enough to be alone during the day, but their mom wanted someone who could hang out with them - at night, I just watched TV and did homework with them. (during school).  They were alot of fun - we always watched The Simpsons together in the boy's bedroom.  We also watched Rocko's Modern Life on Nickelodeon.

As a child of the 80s and 90s myself, having been born in 1982, I watched ALOT of cartoons.  I watched Nickelodeon until I was almost 15 years old (my brother did too - we are twins and really liked Rocko's Modern Life), but Nick was still showing GUTS and Legends of the Hidden Temple until 1997 - shows we watched a few years ago on digital cable as twenty-somethings, usually together.

My mom said while much of the stuff we liked was non-threatening and not annoying as kids, I remember her cringing every time "Legend of Zelda" was on - which was every Friday instead of Super Mario Bros., because she HATED Link.  She also did not like The Smurfs (which we weren't big on) and My Little Pony.

Our cartoon choices were not as bad as our sitcom choices - she still hates Perfect Strangers, which we loved as kids.

I don't have kids, but if I did, I think I'd try to steer them towards cartoons I like.  In addition to all the ones already mentioned that are cool (TMNT, Batman, etc), I'd try to get him to watch Avatar the Last AirBender, watched a few eps of that and that is a pretty freaking GOOD show, for anyone, not just kids.  Been toying around with the idea of getting the DVDs on my Netflix cue so I can watch the whole story in order.

(That's the only drawback, the series is one huge story, so it's kind of hard to pick it up in the middle.)

I watch the Family Guy and my son will ocassionally come in the room.  He's two so he doesn't understand a lot of what is going on in the show.  Still, he'll laugh at a few things.  Usually the stuff I'm laughing at.  As he gets a full vocabulary, I don't think I'll be watching the show with him around.

Trust me, take my advice and don't let him watch a whole lot of the History Channel when he gets a few more years on him. Teachers tend not to like it when a kid starts calling others communists on the playground...geez, of all the notes I've got sent home, that will always be my favorite... :bouncegiggle:

Im not a parent BUT,

Ben 10 kicks ass.
Flapjack is an effing riot.
Courage the Cowardly Dog is great.
Billy and Mandy is hilarious.
Spoungebob is cool, and Fairly odd parants is funny.

Other than that, i have to turn to dvds and internet downloads to watch good cartoons that I grew up with like Rocko's Modern Life.

Pinky and The Brain was such a wonderful show.  I think there were a lot of jokes on it that worked for adults as well.  Same with Rocko's Modern Life, in fact.  Lots of smart humor and double entendre.

My mom likes Family Guy, especially Stewie (she also had a soft spot for Montgomery Burns on The Simpsons - why, I have NO IDEA!).  The funny thing is how many 50-somethings like it.  The accounting supervisor at my job watches it almost every night, and says she laughs pretty hard at some of the weirder, more bizarre jokes.

I worked for a video store until May 2005, and a parent with a nine-year old son asked me if Family Guy was OK for her kid...I told her no, because even though alot of the jokes would go over her kid's head, alot of it is just not appropriate for younger kids (nudity, Quagmire, yadda yadda).  I was 16 when I started watching in 1999, and for some reason, my brother and I understood all of the jokes, including the esoteric references.

My parents never really had to worry about what me and my brother watched, though we've always had this habit of quoting every movie we watched, even the inappropriate lines, and not really knowing what we were talking about (The "ribbed for her pleasure" line in Wayne's World comes to mind - it just sounded funny when I was nine, but I figured out the reference when I was 11 and watching the movie with a friend).

I love a lot of the characters on The Simpsons, but lately the focus of my favorite characters have shifted from the Simpson family to the other people, such as Burns, Ralphie, Martin, etc.

I like "Fairly Oddparents", I think that one's hilarious, and I quote it often, and we watch some Spongebob. OTHERWISE, I'm all about Metalocalypse, and I love Venture Bros and Squidbillies. My all-time favorite though is "Sealab 2021" (Not the ORIGINAL Sealab 2020, hated that one). Metalocalypse has some VERY good music, if you don't take it too seriously, as it doesn't that itself too seriously. They have a song caller "Murmaider", and it's totally Deth Metal, but all in all, , it's about MERMAIDS, or at least MURDERING, and being murdered BY Mermaids.

If anyone is interested in checking out Sealab 2021, I would for starters suggest the episodes "Craptastic Voyage", "Dearly Beloved Seed", "Feast of Alvis", "Der Dieb", "Shrabster", "Monkey Banana Raffle", "Neptunati", or "Moby Sick". For Metalocalypse, check out "Dethclown" or "The Metalocalypse Has Begun" aka "It has Begun".

I should watch that.  I've seen it on, but haven't watched a full one yet.  Of Metalocalypse, that is.

Metalocalypse is funny as heck as long as you don't get the stupid idea that the maker of the show is serious. I've heard people talk about how they hate it and say "They don't realize how stupid they make Deth Metal fans look". . uhh, , yes they do, , that's the point: A bunch of ultra-rich musicians and their sheep-like fans making music that shapes society, , while the musicians themselves aren't smart to tie their own shoelaces.

Also, check out sealab 2021, , it's a riot.

My daughter is 3, so we're kind of limited in what we can watch to begin with. That and the state of children's television today. I do my best to keep her away from mass-marketed stuff like Dora as much as I can.

The problem I have with shows like Dora or Diego, apart from the merchandising, is that these are educational shows that are dumbed down to a ridiculous degree. Every good fact the kids learn is buried in crap that they're going to have to unlearn later. The Kratt Brothers' Zoboomafoo is a better nature show for kids, and it's fun for parents.

Curious George is good, and I get a kick out of Blue's Clues. Thomas the Tank Engine is fun (I have to admit to watching that myself, back when Ringo and George Carlin narrated).

Actually, the BBC has supplied some quality kids' shows. Boogie Beebies is a decent 20-minute exercise routine disguised as singing and dancing. Balamory is a kids' show from Scotland that teaches art, science, physical fitness, organization, etc. in the form of a narrative involving a cast of characters in a little seaside town. Heck, I even enjoy the Teletubbies as cheesy fun. "Tubby custard!"

Thanks to me, Ro also enjoys shows about machines and technology, from the "Mighty Machines" stuff aimed at kids to How It's Made, a show that is basically manufacturing processes from beginning to end with narration. The kid could recognize a real industrial robot before a fictional humanoid one. And she's nuts for airplanes and rockets. She'll sit glued to footage of a Saturn V launch. I'm honestly not sure what my wife thinks of this, but we'll soon have her outnumbered.

That said, we try to keep the TV to a minimum - usually saving it for those times when we need to keep the kid engaged for a half-hour or so. She gets craft time, drawing time, quiet time and a little schoolwork every day. She has lots of books. I installed a 2' x 4' whiteboard in her play area, and I'm just getting around to fixing up an old computer for her to play with. Once a week, on different days, she gets story time at the library, trips to the drop-in centre, a children's music class and a gym program for preschoolers. I'm back to stay-at-home Dad status, so a lot of this is my responsibility.

Here's my favorite.  (Watch BUGS take all the towels... "Don't think it hasn't been a little slice of heaven... 'cause it hasn't!")

Unfortunately, the whole thing isn't there... This one was reconfigured later with a rainstorm, it's all there, and it's just as good:

Metalocalypse is great fun, but hardly a kids show.  Though I wish they had shows like that when I was a kid!

If I'm ever in a band, I'll judge my set's success by the bodycount at the end.

I have also been getting into alot of the Adult Swim stuff, like Harvey Birdman, Sealab and Aqua Teen.  Birdman is particularly fun, moreso because of all the Hannah Barbara cartoon cameos like the episode with the Flinstones as some Sopranos-esque crime family, or Scooby Doo and Shaggy as, gasp surprise, stoners.

It's great you keep her busy - my brother and I watched alot of TV, but I took Ballet in Pre-School (I danced until I was 18, and started up again at 24 years old), and my brother started playing Soccer in Kindergarden.  We both also played video games as kids, which sometimes outnumbered the amount of hours we watched TV, and we also played outside alot in good weather.

I liked his cartoons.  Can't say the same for a bunch of his movies.  But his toons were good.  Pinky and the Brain was a favorite.

I can't stand Veggie Tales, regardless of what they say; I think they are tools of the devil. When my daughter would watch them in her toddler years, I was pretty sure that having to sit through them was pay-back for some serious offense I must have committed somewhere along the line....
