(Let me preface this by saying I am NOT an Obama supporter. Then I will set politics aside.)
Forty-five years ago today, one of the iconic figures of the 20th century stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial and challenged America to live up to the meaning of its creed, "that all men are created equal." He spoke of a dream that someday, in America, men would be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Dr. King did more than anyone since Lincoln to bring that dream forward to fruition, but was murdered before he could see the full fruits of his labors.
Tonight, in Denver, an African American man was nominated for the Presidency of the United States. He is a good and decent man, whatever his politics, and perhaps his nomination is a sign that we can finally close the book on one of the ugliest chapters of our nation's history. I hope so. I was proud to see my candidate, John McCain, air an ad simply congratulating Obama on his achievement. It was a decent act by another decent man, in a poltical process that all too often is carried out with great indecency.
I don't know what this election, or the next four years, will bring to our country. But I know this much . . . somewhere, tonight, Dr. King is smiling.

It truly is an interesting presidential race this time around.  There are actual candidates for me to pretend to vote for [damn foreign passport!]

You have to hand it to Obama: He has the look of a President down, and makes a hell of a soundbyte.  Congrats on him for acheiving so much so quickly.  Now lets get some policy rolling eh?

Personally I don't see McCain running that ad except for good 'I'm a nice guy PR' since it seems like something he needs at the moment, but I do have my share of respect for him as well: as Republican's go, he's not too bad.  :tongueout:

But regardless everyone on this side of the world seems to be after change, no matter which candidate you support. 

I must admit though that Obama is getting more of the attention and very much seems like the darling of the media here. This probably reflects our political situation here in Australia: we just ousted a man who had been in power for 11 years for new government promising reform and change.

Someone once told me of a quote that basically went: Whenever you change government it's not because you voted FOR the new leader, but that you voted AGAINST the old one.

the mcain was classy and it's good people aren't pouring over it to find hidden meanings and so forth. nice gesture.

Reportedly John McCain has picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his VP running mate.

This is gonna be an interesting election!

I simply cannot believe someone that hot could make a good president.

I'm viewing this race with keen interest: also the developments in my home country of Zimbabwe.

Speaking of Zimbabwe: I hear that Mr Mugabe was booed in Parliament ~ that's a first!  :buggedout:

Thankfully it wasn't just one guy, it was the entire opposition who booed the old bugger.  :teddyr:

It is amazing... One ticket witha balck man, and the other with a  woman.  In terms of opening new ground, it is a win-win election.  The founding fathers would have been most shocked i think.  God Bless America, and I really mean that.

I remember being home when I saw that McCain has a woman as his VP running mate.  I told my dad this is going to be historic regardless if either Obama or McCain become president because the USA will either have the first African American as president or the first woman as Vice President.  If my grandmother was still alive (god bless her) she probably wouldn't believe it either that this is happening.
