I think Tuco (the Ugly from THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY) can qualify as a sidekick. Even though he's presented as a co-equal member of the gold-seeking triangle, his role in the film is really the same as most sidekicks: help out the hero, who really drives the action, and provide comic relief. Though he dominates the beginning of the film, by the end he's really trailing along in Blondie's shadow.
