Title: Top 100 Worst Songs Ever
Post by: Mr. DS on September 20, 2008, 06:17:10 PM
Ok...lets roll out the negativity...what songs do you hear and make you want to rip your hair out...allow me to gladly nominate...

1.) Los Del Rio - Macrena
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z7t-Ox3XvU
A stupid dance that even your grandmother can do at weddings...

7.) Limp Bizkit - Rollin'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKAIlrkSZOg
Some of the dumbest lyrics ever...period...

"You wanna mess with Limp Bizkit? (Yeah)
You cant mess with Limp Bizkit (why?)
Because we get it on (when?)
Every day and every night (oh)
See this platinum thing right here? (uh huh)
Well we're doing it all the time (what?)
So you'd better get some better beats
And uh, get some better rhymes (d'oh!) "

Note, perhaps Fred Durst should have listened to that last line...

8) My System Of A Chemical Hooba Romance...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5nw1-_5-Vk

Stupid nerds who can't play properly or sing, become heros to lonely teenage goths and give "metal" a very bad name indeed. I could go on for hours about this emo garbage! So, the world threw away hair metal and look where it got ya? eh? This is talentless whining by a pasty, loser son of a b***h!

12. Poison -- "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu2DA4I4TGw

Some of the worst doggerel I've ever heard. I speak more as a poet than as a musician here. This song takes all traditional poetic imagery and throws it out the window simply to find a poor rhyme.

[poetry lesson] "Every rose has its thorn / Every night has its dawn." Night/darkness is pretty universally accepted as a representation of ignorance/fear/turmoil/etc. Dawn is a symbol of hope/peace. All that is turned upside down just for a bad rhyme. Yes, I can rationalize a party band equating night ending with negative feelings, but the song doesn't justify it in any way, and the rest of the song is no better. [/poetry lesson]

17. Perfect, by Simple Plan. Actually, any of their songs could go on this list, but this one is particularly sickening, and happened to be overplayed to a ridiculous degree on a station I used to listen to. How is it that in 20-odd years, we went from the youthful rebellion of "We're Not Gonna Take It" to some mewling p***y whining for Dad's unconditional acceptance?

I like some of their old stuff but this song just grates on my nerves.  The lead singer's voice is painful to listen to.

OK, brace yourselves.... Terry Jacks, Seasons in the Sun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfm-17pu6SQ&feature=related
Anytime I hear this song (which is thankfully rare), it takes me back to those carefree childhood days when I first heard it on the radio, and could not stand to listen to it. What I find really ironic is that Jacks actually rewrote the song to lighten it up!  :buggedout: Boy, thank goodness for that. Any more depressing and it would have people jumping off buildings.

16.) We Built This City  by Starship.

When some of the very people who've played on it allegedly claim it's garbage (quoting wiki here, so I need help clarifying), it's a bad sign.  Either way, the song's horrible.

Blender magazine contributor Russ Heller later set a record for listening to "We Built This City" continuously for 24 hours. He was encased in a Plexiglas booth — without earplugs — beginning Friday, October 13, 2006 at 8:00 a.m. at a Best Buy store in New York City.[4]

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with it being on the list.  But, I give Hanson a lot of credit.  They, unlike a lot of other bubblegum pop/boybands at least write their own songs and perform their own instruments.  In fact, they're still around and have a much more mature/rock sound than in their heyday.  I liked the song, but I'm not exactly gonna rush out and buy an album they've done.

29. "Brand New Key" by Melanie

I thought this song (aka "The Roller Skate Song") was just irritating and sung off-key when I was a kid, and that it had the world's stupidest lyrics. It's still irritating. But now that I know it has an interpretation as innuendo (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanie_Safka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanie_Safka)), I may just have to track it down and give another listen...

I was working at JC Penny's selling men's suits when this movie/song came out and they used to play this damn song about 10 times every day I worked.  Not to mention that in every song Celine Dion has to thump herself in the chest to really get across the emotional impact of the piece of crap song.

What I always wondered is what in the hell is a "Zigazig Ha"?  Did they get Anthony Kiedes to help out on lyrics there or something?

And the whole if you want to be her lover you've got to get with her friends? Does that mean you can only be her lover if you sleep with all of her friends first? How's that going to help matters?

The mind reels at the emotional complexity of this song...........or not.

The worst song I've ever heard is "Beth" by Kiss. I can not understand how anyone could listen to that crap.

I guess that's # 52.

46) Blondie "Rapture"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHPikUPlRD8
The first charting Rap song... unbelievably by the Punker cum New Wave cum Disco Pop band BLONDIE.  I like that record...   :teddyr: Though I can't say I took them very seriously by that point.  Y'sure it wasn't the video you hated?  Were you also the one who picked the MELANIE song...??  :hatred:  :teddyr:  (I know it was schmendrik).

I think this song and performance is just about the worst I've seen: "The Renewed Mind Is the Key"

56. Another whiny, melodramatic, overwrought, overrated song, this time from way back in 1964. The Leader of the Pack, by the Shangri-Las. There are a few depressing examples of the "car crash song" that I could have included, but this one is the most enduring. For some reason, women seem to love this song. Personally, it's only left me wondering what kind of bad-boy bikers you meet in candy stores.

What can I say? The song grates on me. But I can appreciate that it has a sort of kitschy appeal, and that it has been well parodied and used to comic effect over the years. There have been a few songs listed here that I wouldn't have considered among the worst, but I will agree that Leader of the Pack probably does not belong. Still, there should be some representation of this manipulative musical subgenre. As a friendly amendment, I would replace #56 with another crash song, one nearly as melodramatic, but without a scrap of fun in it - The Last Kiss, by J. Frank Wilson. I almost nominated Teen Angel, particularly since it seems to be the beginning of that musical fad, but The Last Kiss is far worse. Not only is his high-school sweetheart dead, but he is apparently now just putting in time until he can join her, while pinning responsibility for the tragedy on "The Lord." Nowhere near as depressing as Seasons in the Sun (but then what pop song is?), but definitely an overwrought downer of a tune. And it can't be considered a relic of its time, because Pearl Jam covered it only a few years ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=305vRNoofr8

Not the greatest song ever, but I liked it.

I'd never heard that before.  Not perfect, but it's catchy and satirical, a good novelty song.

It's from 2001, notably from the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.  It's a good novelty song.  Then you start to realize that Afroman has like, 5 albums, with each song done in that style, either about drinking or smoking pot.

Wanted to include a dance tune from the late 80s/early 90s, but it's hard to choose. They were more about having a beat and a hook than about being a good song. But some were worse than others, and I think I've found a standout. Ironically, this video makes me kind of nostalgic for the days when my buddies and I would hit the nightclubs to drink, ogle women and gripe about the crappy dance music. Those were the days.

Sad lyrics and a light, bouncy tune. Gotta love it.

The first couple of verses are almost hypnotic. Sort of a blandly pleasant sound. He kind of bounces along endlessly, with virtually no variation in tone or cadence. I zoned out for a while until he changed it up a little.

I never understood why anyone thought that was funny, except perhaps in an ironic sense.

Thinking back to treacly, depressing songs, I have to mention The Last Game of the Season. This song tells a story that is just beyond belief.  It's got football, family values, personal tragedy, and even a reference to the afterlife. It's sad, then sadder, then sadder still, then it's uplifting (but sad), and all the while it's totally pushing your buttons. Give it a new arrangement, it could be on the country charts today.

As much as I enjoy the song, it is admittedly terrible:

Nancy Sinatra--"These Boots Are Made for Walkin'"

I went looking for a song called "Swamp Girl" that is probably the only '60s pop song about suicide. It's another song I greatly enjoy; it sounds very much like a b-movie setup. The only You Tube version I could find was by Charles Manson, and so I decided to just mention the song rather than link to it; there are much better versions, and I really don't much want to link to anything Manson.

I was wondering how long it would be before Manilow started showing up. At least you picked the song he didn't really want to record since he didn't write it (if I recall correctly). As a sappy teen, I was a big Manilow fan, and I'm not ashamed to admit it, although I pretty much quit buying his albums after . . .

This one even grated on my ears a bit. As for "Don't Worry, Be Happy," I think I like it better now than when it came out. For some reason, I hated it then; now, it's all right. I'd forgotten that Robin Williams was in the video.

Okay, I'm haulin' out the big gun.   This one is the most impossibly horrible record ever recorded, kind of cool it is so frickin' strange with a wretched arrangement that's so weird it is fascinating.  CHER "You Better Sit Down Kids."  CHER "sings" the part of a FATHER explaining a marriage breakup to her, uhm, his "kids..."
Perplexingly, it reached the Top 10 in November 1967!  I'm starting to like it because the flipped out jazz ending is fantastiic!  WTF??
TRY THIS FIRST I defy you to listen to it all.  You can hear IT here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIrJJEVCP6M

This one is from a TV special... To make this 5 minute clip worst, it takes nearly two minutes for CHER to "sing..."  CHER is "singing" here live, which if you could believe it, might be a bit better than the bizarre, torturous train wreck the 45 was:

Get off the treacle, people--your teeth will thank you for it!!   :teddyr:

As much as I enjoy the song, it is admittedly terrible:

Nancy Sinatra--"These Boots Are Made for Walkin'"

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLenuBXt2RE

I went looking for a song called "Swamp Girl" that is probably the only '60s pop song about suicide. It's another song I greatly enjoy; it sounds very much like a b-movie setup. The only You Tube version I could find was by Charles Manson, and so I decided to just mention the song rather than link to it; there are much better versions, and I really don't much want to link to anything Manson.

That song reminds me of a story.  At my previous job there used to be this older service associate (AKA bagger) who used to be a go-go girl back in the day then did a massive 180 and become a god loving citizen.  Anyways back when this song was quite popular she picked up the phone and got on the PA system and started singing this song.  Management was looking every to find her and stop her from singing and they found her crouched behind the desk in the Bakery department.  I sometimes wish I was there to see it.

Sadly due to a video I watched a few years ago that used part of this song in it, I can't listen to that song without having to use everything in me to not vomit all over my desk.

A terrible blight on an otherwise very serious and creative career. It's a tragedy this is how the world at large knows him.

I always kind of liked this one. It actually makes me happy.

It was more of a novelty hit. Give it one more listen, keeping in mind that there are no instruments, no other singers. It's all Bobby McFerrin singing and imitating instruments with his voice. You still may not like the song, but the mouth music is kind of fun.

I don't like Jewel songs in general, but this one stands out from the blandness as just weird. Actually, the goofy lyrics are what make this dreary song mildly amusing. "They're not yours they are my own, they're not yours they are my own." I cracked up once when my wife was playing a game with our daughter - "my hands, your hands." I sung a couple bars and she laughed too.

Thanks Rupert. Adultery is so romantic. Call me a cynic, but I don't think their first thought on seeing each other is likely to be "Wow, we have more in common than we knew!"

Still, you have to appreciate a decade in which a guy who looks like a programmer, with hand gestures that would make Shatner wince, could be a pop star. Gives us all hope.

Side note on Ashley because Torgo's post has put me off on a tangent...  First off I have to say her sister has little talent and is as dumb as a post. At least her looks could sell.  Ashley (pre surgery) had no looks nor talent.  Her father shoved both of them down our throats, Jessica first.  To think, he was a former Baptist minister...how can bring such an evil scourge to pop music. I picture Ashley whining to her daddy, "Daaaaaaaaaaad, Jessica has a reality show and an album, I want one now!  Daaaaaaaad, everyone likes Jessica because she's hot, I want surgery to make me hot."  I seriously can not stand her.

It had several things going for it, particularly in the late 80s. My friends were there, the beer was cheap, identification was seldom checked, closing time was something of a guideline, and they actually played quite a bit of good rock, all on vinyl. The same DJ who signed off with Richard Marx would play just about any request. She'd play an entire side for you if it was a good album. Oh, the other advantage was that I could always walk home if necessary.

I always liked Weird Al's parody of Rico Suave which was called "Taco Grande".

Rico Suave commits what I consider a cardinal sin of pop music - he's named in his own song. It's vain, it's cheesy, it's shameless, it's dumb. The hallmark of crap.

His name's Gerardo, isn't it?

I haven't heard the song in a while, but it's by Gerardo.  I can't watch your link, due to stupid Dial-Up I have.

You're right. My mistake. I always assumed he went by the handle "Rico Suave." I wasn't exactly a fan, so I barely remember the guy, except for the line "Rico....Suave."

That said, naming yourself in your own song is still a cardinal sin of pop music. We can probably come up with plenty of examples.

It's a fairly cheesy song.  I think I have it on a mix cd somewhere.  My favorite thing about it was Gerardo appearing in Pauly Shore's self-written movie Pauly Shore is Dead.  In it, Pauly, upset over not being an MTV star anymore, decides to fake his own death.  In one scene, he is driving along one of LA's highways, and encounters Gerardo selling oranges on the sidewalk to earn a living.  Pauly's just like, "Rico Suave, what are you doing?  It's me, Pauly." :teddyr:

Sure, the songs listed here are annoying because they actually get played on the radio and we're forced to listen to them... but there's much, much worse out there.

How about a cut from Fabio's album?

No this I strongly disagree with, if it wasn't Kiss doing this song then I'm sure it wouldn't be on here. Granted, it was very "un-kisslike", but I think it's a good song and I do like the Elder, it's not a favourite album of mine, but it is something different from what Kiss were known for. Saying that though, my favourite Kiss album is "unmasked", so I don' tsuppose anyone's gonna take me seriously.  :bouncegiggle:

PAT BOONE had 38 Top 40 Hits in the Billboard Hot 100 era, including the few years prior (back to '55 - if a record topped then current charts Top 100, Best Seller, Juke Box, etc)  BOONE's last charter was in 1962.  Here is the syrupyest of the ones I know: "April Love."  Can you believe this record went to #1 (October 1957)?   And stayed there for six weeks (count 'em!!)  If you're prone to cavities, skip it.  And if you have "sugar", don't watch this, you might go into insulin shock.

I'm not at all surprised Pat Boone had a lot of hits. He made pop music that white, middle-class parents of the 50s could approve of, including "white" covers of songs by much more talented people. Such as:

In case anyone wondered what Little Richard would sound like if he was devoid of any soul whatsoever.

More Pat Boone, doing...

Fats Domino
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8dx0oE--VI

more Little Richard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=314RUS0Oqkc
(Not too bad, but even Mean Gene Okerlund's cover had more balls than that.)

and finally, a compilation of Boone covers of Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Van Halen, Judas Priest and others.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdAf9fCcV2U
Strangely enough, Paul Anka covered a bunch of rock tunes a few years ago, and it turned out great. The problem, it seems, is Boone.

Yeh, not very good.  'Course covers was the rule of his day... I found BOONE's covers of the great rockers mildly amusing for their kind of awesome badness.  PAT BOONE had, er has, a pleasant voice and apparently looked good to many of his audience, but once he went out, he went way out and like little else has remained out.

What number are we at?

"Turn Me Loose"  Now FABIAN kind of remained cool, hanging on acting in movies, had an impressive 8 Top 40 hits (considering he couldn't sing, all in 1959 and 1960) and was never good:

As one who owns the Pat Boone In a Metal Mood album, I feel I must speak up in his defense. I actually like this album, not because it is good, but because it is colossally, awesomely cheesy. Boone knew it was bad; it is obvious he knew it was going to be ridiculed. He worked with the original artists on most tracks, and they knew it was going to be "different." Basically, all the artists, Boone included, were in on the joke. The public, however, was not, and Boone's fans disowned him for a time. He was fired from some show he was doing for producing such a "satanic" record. He was rehired not much later, but only after it became painfully obvious that the album was not meant to be taken seriously. Boone has taken a lot of flack for this album; I think that takes some courage, alienating your fan base for the sake of a joke.

I will still occasionally pull this album out to terrify friends. It is hilarious to see their faces as they realize they are listening to "Crazy Train" or some such put to this bland jazz beat.

If you want a horrible "serious" album that should never have been made, try this:

Interesting that while Pat Boone did a tongue-in-cheek album of rock covers, Paul Anka took a more serious approach and succeeded pretty well at matching rock lyrics with swing arrangements. He apparently put a lot of effort into choosing songs that wouldn't sound cheesy with that "Rat Pack" sound. I own Anka's Rock Swings, and it's one of the discs my wife and I usually take along on long car trips. I wouldn't even call it a guilty pleasure. It's a great musical experiment and a fun album.

Talking of WWF related 'somgs', does anyone remember a record called "The Slam Jam" from circa 1992? Not terribly good but a hit nevertheless.

That was the one that Jon Oliva sang with Anthrax wasn't it? I think I've got that cd somewhere...

No damn it, stupid me! Slamjam was the rap song with the wrestlers talking:

That song is taken from the album WrestleMania: The Album.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WrestleMania:_The_Album

It was executive produced by none other than the wonderful human being known as Simon Cowell.  Yes, American Idol judge Simon Cowell.

Be A Man by "Macho Man" Randy Savage- Not the 'official' video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i2v1b0BsbA

I'm shocked that somebody in the back of their mind thought that giving "Macho Man' a record contract, in 2003, to record RAP was a GOOD idea.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_a_Man_(album)

What's worse is, I heard there's a follow up coming.  I loved Macho as a kid, but that was in the late '80s and into the '90s.  He hasn't been popular in like, 8 years at least, so why try to capitalize on what little fame stil exists for him?  Is he that desperate for money?
