Title: Searching for some really gory films...
Post by: D-Man on September 24, 2008, 10:26:39 PM
I love gore in horror movies.  It can be kind of a buzzkill for me if I see one that doesn't have the amount of bloodshed that I expected.  So, I'm always on the lookout for another bloody treat.

Here's some of the stuff I've seen that's actually managed to satiate my thirst for gore:

Dead/Alive
Bad Taste
Zombie
Demons
The Evil Dead
The Beyond
The House by The Cemetery
Dawn of The Dead
The Deadly Spawn
Basket Case
Videodrome
The Fly (1986 version)
Cannibal Holocaust (This was a little more unpleasant than what I usually go for)
Nightmares in a Damaged Brain

So, is there anything else out there that you can reccomend?  Or have I seen all that there is to see for my lofty standards?   :teddyr:

Have you seen the unrated version of RE-ANIMATOR?

Oh yeah, I forgot re-animator.  I'm not sure if I have...it's hard to tell what edition of the DVD I got from Hollywood video or Netflix.

And yes, I just remembered I've seen "From Beyond" as well.

Zombie Holocaust (a.k.a. Doctor Butcher M.D.)
Cannibal Ferox (a.k.a. Make Them Die Slowly)
Day of the Dead (didn't care for it, but definitely gory)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (don't care for it, but packs on the gore for everything else it lacks)
John Carpenter's The Thing
Contamination (I've Never seen the uncut version, but it is also known as Alien Contamination)
Don't forget the Re-animator Films (Re-Animator, Bride, and Beyond)

Check out the Video Nasties thread for more recommendations.

Damn, I'm forgetting things right and left, hehe.  I have seen The Thing.  I've also seen TCM2 and Day of the Dead, which, like you, I didn't really care for.

I'll have to check out Cannibal Ferox and Zombie Holocaust, and I've also only seen the cut version of Contamination.  Is the one from Blue Underground the uncut version?

Even though the gore fx are dirt cheap....and the movies tedious, HG Lewis's films deliver the blood and guts.
Fulci's GATES of HELL ( a power drill threw the head+a chick pukin' up her own chitlens!)
MANIAC (Joe Spinell as a creepy serial killer-Tom Savani fx!)
BURIAL GROUND (oatmeal face zombies and tiity biting midgets! Decapitations, gut munching,...all sortsa nasty stuff! Micheal is creepier than any of the gore, though!)
DR.BUTCHER-MD (A boat motor in the face,eyeball eating,...maggotity zombie leftovers....yummy!)
that's all for now...gotta go!

I forgot about those two.

Gates of Hell (a.k.a. City of the Living Dead) has one hell of a build-up, and gore effects, but it falls apart like a decaying zombie in the last 20 minutes. Despite that, it is a fun movie, especially for Halloween, that I have watched several times.

Another one to add is Night of the Zombies (a.k.a. Zombie: Creeping Flesh...not to be confused with the Jamie Gillis Night of the Zombies). The sickening part is the use of mondo footage of some pretty disgusting things.

How about NEKROMANTIK?

Thanks for all the leads!  I've got more films in my Netflix queue as a result...except for City of The Living Dead, and Maniac, which haven't been released there yet.

If you want something that came out recently you should try the movie "Inside".

Some good suggestions in this thread. I love Dr Butcher MD.

Rikki-O: Story of Ricky Lets just say you should bump this up to the top of your que right now, if you haven't seen it. Actually you'll want to own this one.

Return of the Living Dead, I dont think it has tons of gore but its a classic zombie movie, gotta love the tar-man.

Ichi the Killer, I don't reccomend this for most people its a challenging look at many types of violence: torture, sexual violence, sado-masicism, etc. but at the same time its so over the top that its pretty entertaining and it has the blood and gore you're looking for.

Brain Damage from the makers of Basket Case, I think there's a review on the site

28 Weeks later, I really enjoyed this one, maybe even more than 28 Days

Also if you're interested in the history of the gory films try some Herschell Gordon Lewis

Damn it, that's another one I can't find on Netflix, hehe.

Inframan: I've actually seen all of those films, except for Ichi The Killer, which IS in my Nextflix queue.

THE TOXIC AVENGER (1985) is hideously (and hilariously) serious about gore.

I've never even heard of this Dr. Butcher movie, and neither has Netflix...I'll have to search E-bay for this one, probably.

That's because it is only on DVD as Zombie Holocaust. There is a DVD, double-feature, which has the Doctor Butcher M.D. cut (full-frame and VHS quality), but it may be considered bootleg as Amazon has removed the listing for it. It was put out by EastWestDVD.

You can get the VHS here: Doctor Butcher M.D. (http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Butcher-M-Ian-McCulloch/dp/B000KPOLNM/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=video&qid=1222396900&sr=8-9)

Despite claims to the contrary, there are no cut gore scenes between the two versions. The Doctor Butcher version has a cheesy, but great, intro that the distributors added to it. The Doctor Butcher version did cut a little from the early city scenes in the film, which in my opinion makes it move along better. Once they get out of the city, both versions are the same, save for some minor added soundtrack and...er...other sounds that can be quite funny (a zombie...automaton...set on fire just flails silently in the Zombie Holocaust version, while he screams like a girl in the Doctor Butcher version).

Either version is great, but the Doctor Butcher version is just a little more fun.

I can see many scenes in my minds eye, but old age is preventing me from recalling the titles.

I'm not a gorehound, but since that's your thing I recommend "Planet Terror," Robert Rodruiguz's creation. (Yes, I know; I'm obcessed with it.) It doesn't have the same "kind" of gore constantly, like "Dead Alive" seems to have, but it does have lots of NASTY bodily fluids (and really gross pictures).

Maybe Oldboy? Not overly gory but the clawhammer scene is not for the squeamish.

Battle Royale maybe not too gory but lots of blood and mayhem

My personal Top 5 gore flicks...

-Dead Alive
-The Devil's Rejects (not a lot of gore but what there is of it is pretty intense)
-The Evil Dead
-Demons
-Suicide Club (Am I the only sicko out here who thinks this one's kinda funny??? "A-one and a-two and...")

Some people mentioned Lucio Fulci in last page, I'd like to add "The beyond".

Well, I just watched Zombie Holocaust, AKA Dr. Butcher MD, and I was impressed by that one.  I'm putting together a collection of movies I'm going to re-order from Netflix just before Halloween, and that one's certainly made my list.

"The Seven Doors Of Death" (1981)

Title: Re: Searching for some really gory films...

Just to prevent confusion, The Beyond and Seven Doors of Death are the same movie; the second title generally refers to a cut release of the film, though I have not seen any difference myself. Do need to point out, though, that there is a Seven Doors to Death that was made in 1944, and make certain that you don't get them confused.
