Title: Quilombo (1984) Post by: lester1/2jr on October 02, 2008, 08:50:11 AM At first I was bored by this Brazilian historical epic (epic not meaning long just that it's about a historical period and all it entailed) and was going to write it off as an authentic , educational yet unremarkable film more suited to a high school classroom or PBS than my dvd player. But as is often the case I "got into it after a while" mainly because the political issues of liberty vs "peace" (with neighbors who's plantations the people of Palmares, where this takes place, had escaped from) were interesting. clever trojan war type tactics are employed but is history on their side? Unless you know alot about Brazil circa the 1600's you don't know. "Palamares lives on, we will never be slaves again!!"
dated and featuring good but modern rather than time appropriet music (at least not that cheesy "braaaasiiiiiiiiiiiiil!" song), Quilombo is a unique and solid rarity well worth watching for history buffs and anyone else who likes the sturm and drang of civilzations and the wars and back stabbing and all that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAh_3gNuBEo |
