Title: PATHOLOGY (2008)
Post by: indianasmith on October 02, 2008, 05:40:26 PM
I rented this one earlier in the week and managed to watch it before bed last night.  This was a very disturbing film, and very well done at the same time.  A few parts of it were downright hard to watch; at other moments you could not tear your eyes away from the screen.

A quick synopsis - Dr. Ted Grey is a brilliant young doctor doing his residency at the forensic pathology lab located in the city morgue.  He is top notch, with a good job lined up doing forensics work for the FBI as soon as he finishes his residency, courtesy of his future father-in-law.  His fiancee is the uber-hot Alyssa Milano, and the supervisor of residents at the City Morgue is played by John de Lancie ("Q" from ST:TNG).
As soon as he goes to work, Ted bumps into a quintet of brilliant young doctors led by Jake Gallo.  These arrogant young folks lord it over everyone else in the program, but when Ted's abilities impress them, they work him into their little clique.  Pretty soon he discovers their secret - this gang of forensic pathologists are committing murders on the dregs of the city's society, then daring each other to figure out how they did it!  Appalled at first, then attracted, Ted joins the group.  His first victim is a man who shot his wife, kids, then himself, but didn't die.  Ted finishes him off in a very clever manner, and the others congratulate him on his initiation.  He quickly begins a passionate affair with Dr. Juliette Bath, played by Lauren Lee Smith.  He and the others spend a couple of months killing derelicts, figuring out how they did it, cremating the bodies, and making out with each other, all in an abandoned underground wing of the City Morgue simply nicknamed "the Dungeon".

But then he goes to visit his fiancee's family for the holidays, and Gwen (Alyssa) announces she is coming back to the city to live with him for the rest of the residency.  Juliette is jealous, and Dr. Gallo is furious when Ted tries to quit the club.  When it becomes obvious that Gallo has gone off the deep end (he invites three hookers to the old mortuary where the club meets and kills them all), Ted decides it's time to break up the little doctors' murder club . . . permanently.

But the trap he set doesn't get them all.

This movie rocks.  There are a few plotholes, but none so glaring as to take away from your enjoyment of this antisocial, amoral thrill ride.  The actors play their parts well, the girls are quite cute, and there is a fair amount of nudity (living and dead).  The totally jaded, self-loathing attitude of these young doctors is juxtaposed with an opening excerpt from the Hippocratic Oath.

The pathologists hate the living . . . but they hate each other worse.

So what did you guys think of this one?

I have it coming. My sister saw it and said it was great. Looking forward to it.
