                Here's an amazing later  era silent movie (a sound version was subsequently released ) with the lead role played by infamous nazi cinematographer Leni Reifenstahl, who is quite good (as an actress, not a nazi).   German silent movies are the best because they tell as much of the story as they can without using any dialogue.  like if you were giong to the supermarket in a german film  it would have a helicopter shot of your car making it's way to what looks like a supermarket and images in your head of food and just doing everything to convey to you what is happening without saying it. 

                    without sound and alot of dialogue you can do many things,  but the limitations of the format are apparent no where better than here, a disaster movie about being stranded for days on an icy mountain.  you can do it, it's just a little difficult.

   But I really liked this movie despite this and it's 2 hour plus length.  the actors are very likable and until disaster strikes the scenes of the mouintain cabin where the young couple are staying are charming, despite some weird german customs:  the people share a cabin with a strange man who just walks in and out and says nothing.  and they all sleep in the same bed!

     stunning photgraphy is another reason not to miss this one.  and of course, it has an amazing title

I could be wrong but weren't some scenes from this used as stock footage in one of the "Flash Gordon" serials?

There is a rumor that some shots were used in The Mole People in 1956.
