Title: Top 100 Bass Players
Post by: Torgo on October 09, 2008, 12:08:56 PM
I figured this would make a nice compaion piece to the guitarist thread.  Plus, I'm a bass player myself.   :teddyr:

Anyway: I figured I would kick things off with who I consider to be the greatest bass player to ever walk the face of the earth:

1) JACO PASTORIUS  (Weather Report, solo)

Shoot, I was afraid this would happen.  I can only think of about 4 or 5 bass players who impress me, and 2 have already been named.

But you can't leave out

5. Ron Carter

A key member of Miles Davis' "second great quintet".  I saw him play with Javon Jackson at Sweet Basil's in NYC in the late 1990's, one of the great musical experiences of my life.  I was about 5 feet away from Ron.  He soloed for about 2 or 3 minutes on one song, though it seemed much longer because I kept expecting him to run out of ideas, and he'd manage to come up with something new.

Nice youtube with embedding disabled: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9RAk67X928.  This appears to be from the same time period I saw him live.

I disagree with john paul jones an paul mcartney now you people are judging famous bass players lets face it they both play root notes.

i would say jaco, phil, and of course les claypool who copletley chnged bass playing
as phill in the more jaming music scene
jaco with his jazz fusion and harmonics
and les claypool with inventing his own way on how to play bass and he never has lessons

What's the big outrage? The list is nowhere near 100. If you want them on, just add them.

These threads are not the typical Top 100 lists to be picked apart and criticized. They're a participatory thing, an opportunity for anyone on the board to add somebody they like. They're in no particular order, and everybody has their own reasons for the names they post.

Oh, for Pete's sake! Just add him and quit moaning!

By the way, what colour did he dye himself? I'm guessing maybe fuschia. That would be pretty tragic. :twirl:

I've no idea. I just figured if you were going to have a list of bass players, there should be a picture of someone playing a bass.

I'm not sure how you have a top 100 bass player's list without mentioning the most recorded bass player in history Abraham Laboriel. Also glad to see Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten listed, although I think they deserve to be listed higher. I disagree with the person who says that McCartney plays just the one. In my opinion McCartney, while not the most naturally blessed player on the list, is responsible for some of the most creative bass lines in rock history.

If I could give you karma I would. I couldn't agree more about McCartney. Personally, I couldn't care less about how much you shred as a bass player if your bass line doesn't move me.

I'm the one who nominated McCARTNEY a year and a half ago on page 1 of this thread.  I choose this silly song to illustrate because I have always loved the bass line:

Still room for him. Shall we make him number 88? The numbers mean nothing other than they order in which they're posted, by the way. A few people get miffed about where somebody is on the list.

90. JOE OSBORNE bassist in RICKY NELSON's original hit-making band, though one of the most recorded bassists in the last 50 years, is typically overlooked because RICKY also had the awesome JAMES BURTON as his lead guitarist.

Going to add Mike Mesaros, formerly of The Smithereens. He came up with the very memorable bass line for Blood And Roses. In fact, he literally made the song with the bass.

And a great big nod to Cliff Burton, as we all know from Metallica.   However, in his pre-Metallica days, he played with a SF Bay Area band called Trauma.

Here is a clip of an excellent bass solo Cliff does from a Trauma song called We're Going Off.  Anyone doubting the man's ability should think twice:

Anthrax's Frankie Bello DOES kick ass....listen to the opening of Got The Time and his solos thru out the entire song. All done with his fingers too!

Finger players are truly talented at a level only a few are lucky enough to rise to.

Musicianship is subjective. And to base someones creativity on technical ability alone is not only insulting but just plain stupid! Sometimes a player can say a hell of a lot more with root notes than with advanced knowledge of theory.
John Paul Jones is true talent and plays what is right for the song and more often than not there are brilliant moments in his playing. When he's in the pocket Led Zeppelin becomes a groove machine. You think I wanna hear tapping in Led Zeppelin song. Paul McCartney is a songwriting bassist and so his focus would tend to be more on melody. Both of them create amazing melodies.
