Title: Powell endorses Obama as 'transformational'

Powell endorses Obama as 'transformational'
Retired General Colin L. Powell, one of the country's most respected Republicans, stunned both parties on Sunday by strongly endorsing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) for president on NBC's "Meet the Press" and laying out a blistering, detailed critique of the modern GOP.

Powell said the election of Obama would "electrify the world."

"I think he is a transformational figure," Powell said. "He is a new generation coming ... onto the world stage and on the American stage. And for that reason, I'll be voting for Senator Barack Obama."

As a key reason, Powell said: "I would have difficult with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that's what we'd be looking at in a McCain administration."

Powell, once considered likely to be the nation's first African-American presidential nominee, said his decision was not about race...

I was saddened by this news, but it is Powell's decision to make.  I think his anger over negative campaigning has led him to a contradictory decision, to say the least.

Of course, Democrats are probably saying the same thing about Lieberman's endorsement of McCain!

I fear that poor Barack, if he should win, is being set up for spectacular failure. "The One", "The Messiah" - I mean, c'mon, he's a politician!!! There is no way he can live up to the expectations being placed on him.  And when some folks realize this, I fear there disappointment will translate into bitter disapproval.

Very possibly, but I think this news is insightful.  I don't think COLIN POWELL is a rube and is well aware of his decision and its ramifications.  When OBAMA was in Germany, 200,000 Germans came out to hear him speak.  That's 200,000!!  This election has become less about either candidate and more about the USA's role in the world and the world's hope that the USA will reverse some of the important policies of the last 8 years.

I must admit it's been a long time since I've had much respect for a presidential candidate, so respecting both is kind of a treat.

I do not think Obama is  a bad man.  I believe he is a patriot and wants what is best for the country.  However, there are some things about him that frighten me, not least of which is some of the people and organizations that are his most ardent supporters.

However, I'm sure that many on the left say the same thing about McCain supporters.  The important thing is we are ALL Americans!  My respect for Secretary Powell remains substantial.  I disagree with his decision, but I support his right to make it.

Have a great day, my friend.
