Title: Atragon
Post by: akiratubo on October 25, 2008, 12:12:51 AM
I've seen boring movies but this ...

There's this sunken nation called Mu, see, and it wants to conquer the surface world.  The only thing standing in the way is the submarine/airship Atragon, which is also called the Gotengo for no particular reason.  (I suppose Atragon is the class, and Gotengo is the actual ship name?)  Mu has submarines, flying bombs, and a giant monster called Manda.

Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

IT ISN'T!

There's hardly any action.  What little action there is is listless and without any sense of urgency.  Even Akira Ifukube's score is decidedly soporific.  The Atragon/Gotengo is a boring vessel, just a tube with a drill on the end.  Manda is a boring monster, just a generic sea serpent.  The actors look bored.  Hell, even the Manda puppet looks bored!

Only in the last few seconds (literally) does the movie manage to do anything interesting.  The Empress of Mu has been captured by a porno photographer who is the boyfriend of the daughter of the Atragon/Gotengo's captain (don't ask), and thus is forced to witness the destruction of her nation when the Atragon/Gotengo blows up its artificial sun.  (It's boring, trust me.)  Overcome by grief (or possibly boredom) the Empress leaps off the Atragon/Gotengo's deck and swims into the rapidly expanding tsunami created by the destruction of her nation.

But that's not really the interesting part.  What is?  That tsunami is huge!  It's probably going to completely destroy every square inch of Pacific coastline in the world!  By blowing up Mu, the Atragon/Gotengo probably did even more damage than Mu itself would have!

So, there you have it.  A movie completely without merit.  It's unbelievable.  How could the same studio responsible for the 60s Godzilla movies also create this heap of s**t?  I just can't fathom it.

I absolutely LOVE the Toho classics, but this one's definitely not one of their best. It does have "Manda" in it though.  :tongueout:

I've never even heard of such things. This sounds interesting.

I actually enjoyed this film. It's nonsensical fantasy adventure sci-fi fun not totally unlike the later seasons of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea". I especially loved the Atragon flying submarine. I will grant though that one shouldn't go into this film expecting much in way of giant monsters. Still I liked this one.

I have been sitting on a bootleg copy of this for years, still havent watched it. Didn't it used to be really rare or hard to find?
