Title: What's the meaning of your screen name?
Post by: Rev. Powell on October 25, 2008, 03:33:06 PM
I've been wondering what some of your screen names mean.  Some of them are obvious to me, and some of them mystify me.

Mine is a reference to the guy in my avatar--Rev. Harry Powell, the serial-killing preacher from NIGHT OF THE HUNTER.  I had the picture as my desktop wallpaper when I signed up, and I thought it would be cool to use it as my avatar.  So I chose my name to go with the picture.

However, I have had to explain to some who thought I was a man of the cloth that my "Rev." is short for "Revenant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenant_(folklore))", not "Reverend".

So what's the story behind your screen name?

I hate thinking up either screen names or avatars. Most forums I participate in (technical and political) I use my initials or my actual name. I'm just not clever at this.

However, I felt I ought to make a stab at having something interesting when I joined this site, so I came up with one of my favorite fictional characters: Schmendrake the mediocre wizard from Peter Beagle's "The Last Unicorn". Among other things, this character appeals to me because I'm a criminally incompetent amateur magician. Alas, I misremembered the spelling.

When I decided I ought to take a stab at coming up with an avatar, I used another of my favorite fictional wizards, Tim the Enchanter from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

Bet mine was one that mystified you?

I decided on Circus Circus because it was the name W.A.S.P. (my favourite band period!) used six months prior to adopting their famous moniker. I happened to be looking at pictures of Las Vegas for a desktop and there was the "Circus Circus", which clicked with me. As many people have probably already guessed, I have a disturbing obsession with evil clowns that brutally murder children - thus fitting in also with a Badmovie/B-Movie forum e.g. "Killer Klowns" , "Clownhouse", "The Funhouse", "Killjoy".

Here's W.A.S.P. performing as Circus Circus circa 1981

They had to give up the name due to the real "Circus Circus" in Vegas threatening to sue - the rest is history...

Actually yes, a bit.  I lived in Las Vegas for 9 years so I can't help thinking of the casino everytime I see your name.  I thought maybe you were a FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS fan, since a key scene takes place in Circus Circus.

Boring story.

I needed a login ID when I first set up my internet account.  Alas, as my first name is pretty common, all I was given as choices were weird contractions of my name with randomly assigned numbers.  Didn't care for any of those choices so. . .

As Kester is the Celtic version of my first name and Pelagius is the Greek version of my last name. . .

It made sense at the time.

Before I opened my website I was using the name DarkSider in my email.  I've always liked dark and evil characters in movies so I guess thats why I picked it.  Then I started DarkSider's Realm on a whim one day after watching Street Trash. My website was already open when I joined the board, hence my current name.  Nothing original or overally scary, just boring old me.

Since around the year 2000 I went by Ashthecat here on this board.
One day a couple years ago I got tired of it and shortened it to Ash.

A lot of people think it's an homage to Ash from the Evil Dead films but that's not correct.   I used to have an ashy grey colored cat.  His name was Ash.  One evening sometime in late 2000, I was sitting at my desk trying to come up with a screen name.  As I was doing that, I was staring at my cat and it just popped into my head.   Been using it ever since.

...and how 'bout that avatar of your's?  :tongueout:

In case anybody is counting, this is the third such thread, of my memory, about user names. If someone wanted to search out one of those older threads, it may prove interesting to find out about some older members who don't come around very often.

It's always interesting to have such a thread as some user names always make you wonder; and some of you need therapy. :teddyr:

Just in case anybody has been asleep since they have been here (judging by some of the writing on this forum...that is entirely possible* ), my user name is from Doctor David Menard from Lucio Fulci's Zombie (1979).

Trevor seems to be the only other person who knew that Doctor Menard's first name is David. Of course, it is only mentioned once in the movie, by his wife, so it is easy to miss.

*That's called a joke; so I don't want to hear any little girls whining about it.

I've collected Indian artifacts since I was 13.  When I was in high school, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK came out.  Not long after, I was out artifact collecting with a friend of mine.  I was walking across a creek on a footlog when the log snapped in half.  I threw myself forward, caught a root on the far bank, and scrambled up.  My buddy laughed and said, "Dude!! You're just like that Indiana Jones!"
I said; "It's Indiana SMITH, thank you very much, and unlike that wimp Harrison Ford, I'm NOT afraid of snakes!"

So the legend was born.

It's the serial number off my bike.
When I signed up for my first email account, the name I wanted had already been taken, so I just rattled off that number.
If you've ever owned a Kawasaki, it's a habit you get into.
It's not enough just to know the year & model, you need to memorize the series letter, & the six digit sub series.

Post by: Derf on October 26, 2008, 04:22:25 AM
When I was a kid, there was a local horror movie host around here called Count Vesco. His sidekick/Igor-style character was called Derf. I thought the name sounded funny as a kid, and it took me a while to figure out it was just Fred backwards, but I liked it. When I started playing video games on a computer (an Apple ][e), I started using the name to label my high scores because the d, e, r and f keys are all close together and were quick to type in so I could start another game.

And incidentally, no, my name isn't Fred; it's Don. I know a Fred who likes to introduce himself as Derf, pronouncing his whole name backwards, but I had also been using Derf for many years before I met him.

My avatar is Max from Steve Purcell's Sam & Max comics. I played Sam & Max Hit the Road way back in 1993, and it was one of the funniest video games I had ever played (and still is). I liked the characters even without having read the comics, and so I eventually came across a picture I could modify easily enough to use as an avatar here. I've gone through a couple of different images, one I created and one I found, but I think Max will stick around for a while. I like the little furball.

I've been called sister by many for years, you know the old line... "I love you like a sister." Yeah, i'm usually the sister, never the girlfriend.... and somewhere along the way, my friends started calling me Sister Grace.

Occasionally I'll go into other forums, and I often get asked if I'm a nun. Considering some of the forums (i.e adult nature) that I frequent, thats pretty hilarious.

As for my avatar, I'm always telling my family that one of these days they will finally get to me and I'm going to stick my head in the oven (I consider that the classiest method of suicide...just kidding) which would be interesting seeing as my oven is electric instead of gas....

The screenname JJ80 is simply derived from my christian and middle names Joseph John and the second half of my year of birth 1980. I chose the various "Gorgo" avatars because it's my favourite monster movie. The other character that I occasionally use is a puppet called "Wordy" from an old children's TV show called "Look And Read".

Your suicides, you do them with pride,
you do them every year:
you hang yourself from the branch of a tree,
the branch it breaks, I fear.
Your suicides, you do them with pride,
that hotel in King's Cross:
you overdosed on heroin,
'till the use of a limb you lost.
Your suicides, you do them with pride,
that time you slashed your wrists:
your blood it clotted quickly,
your blood was just too thick.
Your suicides, you do them with pride,
in your car with exhaust fumes:
some nosy parker came along,
your suicide was doomed.
Your suicides, you do them with pride,
but are you really sincere?
You say some day you will succeed
but you're ninety-three next year.

'Raffine' is the rather harmless sounding name demented bad film maker Andy Milligan would slap on some of the credits of his movies so it didn't look like he did practically everything. The idea was to make crap like THE GHASTLY ONES and BLOOD-THIRSTY BUTCHERS appear a bit more professional.

I recently discovered it's also the name of an art gallery in Savannah, GA.

My name's got nothing to do with Austin Powers, in case anyone thought as much. I've been using the Anubis moniker since I started writing for the internet. The Von Mojo part was something I used while playing Tenchu 2. When using the "create your own level" editor, you saved each level under a name. I like to tag "Von" into names cuz it sounds funny and at the time I was thinking of X-Men villain Mojo, hence "Von Mojo". Meh.

The avatar? Been a little schizo lately and can't settle on one, so I just used images of past avatars and made a slideshow. Evil Dead Alan Hale is still my favorite though.  :teddyr:

A lot of people think it's an homage to Ash from the Evil Dead films but that's not correct.

For some reason I had always assumed it was an homage to Ash (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0000859/) from Alien (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/).

... it took me a while to figure out it was just Fred backwards ... I started using the name because the d, e, r and f keys are all close together and were quick to type in ...

Which is exactly why I tend to use 'FRED' and derivations thereof for variable names when I write quick-and-dirty programs.  2nd most popular: 'ASDF'.

First initial, Last name. Nothing creative at all. . .

Could be worse; your name could be 'Brenda Utthead' (from Dilbert).

So what's the story behind your screen name?

Well, when I signed up on this forum I used one of my anonymous e-mail accounts, so to keep things straight I used the same name as the e-mail.  It simply refers to my favorite team, the Chicago Blackhawks (http://blackhawks.nhl.com/).

As for my avatar, I wanted something original, unique and G-rated, so I went through all of the animated GIFs I had saved on my computer over the years and chose the one you see (after some slight modifications).  What can I say?  I like Snoopy.  And happiness is a dancing beagle.

I always guessed it was a sports team you named yourself after, but I woulda never guesed the blackhawks! So how's your record against Detriot?

Well, we've only played one game against the Red Wings (http://redwings.nhl.com) so far this season.  In that 498th meeting between these two Original Six (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_six) teams we fell in the shoot-out after skating to a 5-5 tie, which still gives us 1 point.  Last season we were 5-3 against them.  So to answer your question, I'd say pretty good.

Actually the Blackhawks never crossed my mind because 90% of Americans don't really think about hockey except for playoffs, I happen to be in the 10% bracket and it still didn't cross my mind.

Sorry about that, I forgot that the Blackhawks were kinda of the Wings kyptonite last year. On the other hand karma for being a fan of the original six.

I threaten to make a sequel of Nukie in hopefully the vein of  "Meet the Feebles" meets "Dead Alive" meets "The Toxic Avenger" meets-- I can't put my finger on it.
Just imagine alot more snot, tourture; intentional doofus charactures of Heads of States (Bush, Blair, Castro) and Terrorists (Bin Laden, Zarkawi), and alot of gore.

Same plot but in 2005 in Iraq and Guantamo Bay and Cuba.

The title I got in mind; "Nukie 2: Searching in Iraq".

But then again, too much effort!

I swiped mine from a book title: Pilgermann by Russell Hoban.  Hoban is one of my favorite authors and Pilgermann is an astounding book.  Here's part of a summary from a Hoban website:

Quote
It's arguable, I suppose, that you haven't really had a bad day until early one morning, fresh from an adulterous tryst with a transcendently beautiful tax-collector's wife who bears the name of wisdom, you are cornered by a Jew-hating mob in the middle of a pogrom who throw you to the cobblestones, brutally castrate you and feed your genitals to a sow. That's what happens to Pilgermann, a German Jew of the 11th century, and in the aftermath of this horrific event, he finds himself selling all of his possessions and setting off on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, at the time of the First Crusade during the years 1096 to 1098. His traveling companions include Bruder Pförtner, an acid-tongued, priapic apparition of death; the headless corpse of the tax-collector whose wife Pilgermann slept with; and the ghost of the sow who ate his "proper parts."

Post by: Saucerman on December 31, 2008, 10:26:27 PM
Well, Saucerman comes from the film Invasion of the Saucermen.

Ever since I was a small child, I've been obsessed with monsters, and my local public library was very well-stocked with books about monster movies of the '30s, '40s, and '50s, and in one of those, I found a photograph of one of the Saucermen.  Something about it scared the everloving bejesus out of me.  I had a lot of nightmares about one of those Bug-Eyed Monsters coming after me.

About a year ago, I decided to break from the pattern I'd gotten into of using "punc_e" or some variant thereof (an informal shortening of "Punctuated Equilibria," a theory that evolution occurs in fits and starts, rather than at a steady, gradual pace -- my use of the name is a remnant from the time I spent as a biologist-to-be) as my username for everything, and since shortly before this time, I'd begun building my B-movie collection in earnest, the name of my oldest boogeyman seemed fitting.

As for my avatar...it seemed fitting.  I found it as someone else's avatar on Livejournal and appropriated it.  It looks like it might be some sort of video game sprite, though if it is, I don't know from what game.

It is to due with my almost chaos-gnostic beliefs, interest in the occult and luciferian leanings. Void - for coming from nothing (going back to the nothingness also). Mother - the cosmic womb, where all life stems from.

Science and the occult play a very important role in my life. Even more so now that Dark matter has nearly been found and confirmed, as it ties all my beliefs together even stronger. It's great, because no-one can ever say that I argue my beliefs or push them on others because I pretty much believe in nothing!  :teddyr:

Not sure of how the unfeathered part came into it,  but Umaril was the last of the great Ayleid (Heartkand High Elf) sorceror kings of Tamriel. He was slain by Pelinal Whitestrake, one of the Knights Of The Nine as they battled in White Gold Tower in the Imperial City.
Thousands of years later, he was reborn in the fires of Oblivion and swore to once again wreak havoc on Tamriel. He resides in his former palace of Garlas Malatar, on the western edge of the Abecean Sea, with his Auroran guards.

While I'm not a professional archivist, much of my interests revolve around the documentation and preservation of my life and those important to me, so my screen name reflects my outlook on life.  My books, CD's and DVD's are being catalogued; I've kept reasonably detailed journals for a large percentage of my life; I use photography to document the things I do and places I visit, and often tape live concerts and gigs for later enjoyment.

Friends ask for advice on how to categorize and store their documents and belongings, and my family knows that if they need to know what happened in any given year, I can tell them.  For the last few years, I've made a note of every time I've watched a movie, as well as the date, location, and company kept if applicable.  And I'm in the process of compiling a list of every single movie and TV show I've ever watched, organized by year.  Earlier years are limited to the movies that were released at those times, but it's still a lot of fun to dig through and work out when I saw everything.

That's really cool, have you ever considered servers being a more practical way of preserving music and film though? I wish I had more of a drive to do a journal - I have started maybe 3 times in my life but it never stayed consistent. This year I have been tracking films but not TV, and I have started to compile a lifetime list on imdb. Could you post some of your collections?

I've ripped all of my CD's to flac and am hunting for a good program that will do clean, simple disc images for my DVD collection.  Everything digital I have is backed up over multiple harddrives, stored in different physical locations.  Every two or three years, I buy larger and faster harddrives, copy everything across, and then leave the old ones as backups.

I've been writing journals for most of my life.  Even my diaries from 5-8 detailed the movies and TV shows I watched!  Some years I write more, other years, less.  It depends on what is happening and how much time I have to journal.  About ten years ago I began to keep my journals in digital form, which has made writing and storage so much easier, but I still like physical journaling as I can sketch or use nonstandard writing formats.

Really, you don't 'have to' write something every day, or even every week, but it can be really enjoyable and useful to write things that you want to remember; things that excite or thrill you; things that have made you think or feel, or want to express thoughts that no one but you should read.  Other times, I copy my emails and forum posts into a document, which then becomes a journal by proxy.  Just keep everything in the same place so you can find it later.  Trust me on that!

Before I stop derailing this thread, I want to suggest a great book about journaling called 'The New Diary' by Tristine Rainer.  It's a truly marvelous book which will give you so many ideas for what to write in a journal, including creating dialogues with yourself, writing letters that you never send (and you are therefore free to say exactly what you want), examining and analyzing your dreams, and loads more.

Thanks for the recommendation, also flac is a great format - I usually get it included when I buy a vinyl or CD. You should read up about Handbrake for ripping videos, I have come into a problem with multiple drives do you split them up into alphabetic subdirectories or have some kind of combined virtual directory thing going on, I need to look into doing that because it is getting tricky to split them up into sections now.

I have a huge movie collection but I couldn't tell you every movie I own to this day as I still have yet to complete a full list of it every time I try...inevitably I get sidetracked by other stuff going on in my life...

A bit here, and a bit there.  It all helps.  Enter a small pile of movies every so often and you'll be through the lot faster than you think.  I did this when ripping my CD collection and was done in under three weeks.  The trick is having everything physically in one place, so you can gradually work through from one end to the other.  And if you start a list, keep adding to it, don't start another one.

I'm currently looking at some specialized book, music and movie software packages that automatically retrieve information from IMDB and other databases when you insert a DVD or scan a barcode.  For older books with no barcodes, you can use the ISBN number to retrieve information.  Once you enter the book or DVD or CD, an entry is created with all the details from relevant databases on the internet, so you don't even have to type anything more.  These programs will even download cover art and book covers for your database!

As for how to organize folders over multiple drives: my CD collection is organized alphabetically by artist, and stored on 4TB harddrives.  My CD collection is reasonably large but certainly not enough to spill over 4TB!  I tend to keep topics and types of files separate, so photographs and video files go in one set of drives, ripped music in another, camera raw files in another drive, etc.  When I begin the Great DVD Backup Project, I plan to group everything alphabetically, by title, just to make things easy to find.
