I feel your pain, Mr. Briggs. I missed being able to vote in the 1996 election by like seven weeks! Almost everyone else I knew was voting, and I missed it.

I plan to go vote on my lunch break.  I get an hour for lunch which is plenty of time to go cast my ballot.

Since I work 2nd shift I'll be going to vote prior to coming into work. The great thing is that the polling place I have to go to is literally just right up the street from my house.

Normally I don't bother to vote given that our state always swings the direction I would vote for anyway, but after the last 8 years everybody around me has threaten to Nancy Kerrigan me if I didn't.  :buggedout:

We're going to the polls in April next year ~ to vote in my area is always nice because at the junior high school where we go to make our cross (but not to make them cross)  has a shop which sells hot dogs, hamburgers, cold drinks, tea, coffee and whatever to the voters.

Do you people know how hard it is to vote with a hot dog in one hand, a cold drink in the other and your ID book in your mouth? Impossible.  :teddyr:

I will be watching the USA polls with keen interest.

I should just add that in SA we still vote manually with an X on a ballot paper, not electronically like I saw Kevin Costner doing in Swing Vote.

We're manual as well Trevor.

Go get 'em ladies and gents!  May your candidate win!

In our country everyone has to vote, so there's no choice in the matter.  If you don't care, you can 'Donkey Vote' which basically means to not vote properly, or check a box at all.  All they care about is that you turned up.

That sounds a little strange to me, Dean. I mean surely it is up to the individual to decide whether they want to vote or not?  Strange that the government makes it mandatory to vote and if you don't, you're in trouble.

We have early voting, so I went last Friday after work.  First time I've used one of those electronic voting machines.  At the little Baptist Church that's my regular polling place we use the paper ballots and darken the circle by your choices.  We used to use the ballots where you punch the hole out, but I guess after that whole hanging chad thing in Florida those kind fell out of favor.

I'm not a fan of early voting, I think everyone should vote on election day and vote only once. I believe early voting enables more fraud. And I do not think there is much debate on the amount of fraud there is out there.

The easy way to solve this is a unique bar coded voter ID that is in a national database that is about the only way IMHO that early voting can't be exploited.  Geez if a store can keep up with what they sell it would seem the country can keep up with who voted.

That's exactly how we vote here in SA, Cheeze: all our ID books have bar codes that get scanned and one of our nails gets a ink mark on it.

I know it's a radical idea that someone should vote only once **cough-cough** ACORN. Interesting how they only seem to be really active and under investigation in swing states.

Call me crazy ("CRAZY!"--thank you) but what's wrong with what is done in so many other countries that require everyone to vote on one day and then place, as Trevor mentioned, semi-permanent ink on the nails or fingertips of a voter? If you've got the ink mark, you can't vote again. Maybe someone would show up with an ink remover, I don't know, but it's at least a better solution than the one we have now. What I will go out on a limb and say is that our present national voting process in the United States is dysfunctional.

Whatever our political affiliations, at the end of election day we all bleed red, white and blue, and all good Americans want only the best for their country, so I think I can speak for everyone here in hoping next Tuesday is the fairest, most well-attended election we've ever had, and that it goes off without a hitch. Whoever wins, let's hope the next four years are ones of prosperity, unity, peace, and happiness for the United States and the world.

I'd like to suggest that anyone who hasn't followed the candidates and their positions exercise their constitutional right to go have a beer or two instead of voting.  Voting is more a responsibility than a right.  A large voter turnout is not a good thing if the voters turning out are ignorant on the issues.

So far there have been over 20 million votes casts in 30 states, here a breakdown so far:
