Title: What's the most terrible thing you've ever done?
Post by: ER on October 29, 2008, 03:29:03 PM
With apologies to Peter Straub for lifting the opening question from his novel Ghost Story, what's the most terrible thing you've ever done?

I'll admit to something pretty mean and stupid. In the spring when I was sixteen I was going through what remains the worst time in my life. Someone I loved died, my parents split up, the autumn before I myself very nearly died and missed most of a quarter of school, I was continually cruel to this boy who’d once meant everything to me, my life just seemed without any meaning whatsoever. Though I was still making straight A’s, the honor roll, and appeared all right on the surface, inwardly, secretly, I wasn't myself to say the least. So there I was not even talking to my mom, angry at some other people, living through this total change in my personality for about half a year, and in that state of mind I was walking alone one evening by some railroad tracks near my house, and there stood the neighborhood's uber-hood, this boy we all knew was going to wind up either in politics or maximum security prison. I asked what he was doing and he pointed to a pile of broken bricks beside him and said he was waiting for a train to go by because it was hauling a bunch of new Toyotas, and his father had lost his job “cuz of foreign cars.” So I waited there with him till the train came slowly by and handed him the bricks to throw at the cars. He busted out a lot of windshields, lemmetellya...

I know, on the “worst” scale that’s not murder but to me that was hard core bad behavior, and I’ve never done anything like that since.

It was accidental but I still feel really bad about this, in around the 7th grade I had been getting p**sed at about every human being because for some reason I was the only one who walked at a decent pace, I still am and I still get p**sed, anyway, at on point someone in front of me with noone in front of him took forever getting onto the bus to him I said, "It's called walking that's what your legs are for!"  What I didn't know was that this kid only had one leg.  Still eats me up inside.

Boy, where do I start.

When I was in high school, a friend and a I beat the crap out of some guy that was harassing my sister.

After my parents divorced, my Mom was working until midnight + on weekdays. A friend and I used to roam the streets and steal pretty much everything that wasn't bolted down and some of what was. What was left usually got vandalized.

All through high school and even after, I actually prided myself on never having gone with a girl for more than a month without cheating on her. I was always 'juggling women' and didn't really try to hide it.

Most of that time I had a steady girlfriend who I used to break up with before Christmas so I wouldn't have to buy her anything for it or her birthday (which was only a few weeks later), then make up with her afterwords.

Where I grew up, the tradition was the first weekend of a new school year was a party. After I graduated, some friends and I crashed one of these parties which was apparently run by a bunch of freshmen. We got there LATE, pretty much everyone was passed out, so we took all the booze, ALL the food in the entire house, and put it in the car. We called 1-900 numbers (they had 2 phones) and told the women on the other end to "just keep talking" and laid the phones down. My friend went into the parent's closet, pulled a pair of HIS GFs panties out of his pocket, and put them in the pocket of one of the Dad's suits. Then we took the microwave outside, filled it up with 2 rolls of aluminum foil, plugged it in, turned it on, and left.

When I was in high school, a friend and I had a little "business" making copies of porno VHS tapes and selling them. When kids would ask where they were supposed to come up with $40 for a VHS tape of 3-4 top-named, full-length pornos, I would tell them "Steal it from your parents".

Once, I 'bumped' a guy with my car to knock him down so we could steal his drugs. . .

I was an idiot kid. .

About 12 years ago, my early death was almost certain and through reflection, I knew I had to make amends for a lifetime of selfish, bohemian "carpe diem" behavior. I made heartfelt apologies to those I'd harmed, and wrestled with a conscience I didn't know I possessed. In time I felt at peace. But there was one incident from years before that I couldn't absolve myself of. It was cowardly and shameful (yet I've done much, much worse things), and it remains with me to this day. My old roommate was trying to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend, and she had a friend that was "perfect" for me. My roommate and I worked for the same company, and were away from home doing installation work for 3 80 hour weeks a month, and partying every spare moment (a lot of stuff was built very quickly in the 80's by men like us, with a little help fom my friends), so I didn't have time for matchmakers. But I talked on the phone with Diana, and over a few weeks we talked a lot! I couldn't wait to meet her; we loved and hated the same things and had similar backgrounds. My mates girlfriend made a dinner date for the 4 of us, and when I saw her, she was perfect! An independent, witty, petite firecracker. Everyone was having a great time, and the conversation was easy and fun. When the 2 beautiful flowers got up to visit the ladies room, Mark looked at me and said: "I knew you'd like her! The only thing is, uh....she's got Herpes...." I grabbed his shirt and shouted "Are you f**king kidding me?'. He shook his head....and I jumped up from the table, ran to my truck and raced away like a chickens**t. His ex never called back, nor did Diana. The next week I assisted him off a scaffold and he broke some ribs in payback (and he didn't cry foul).

He deserved what he got, Diana didn't. I still feel ashamed and s**tty about this. Fessing up to it helps relieve the conscience.

Uuuhhh . . . wow . . . lessee . . .

man, I got nothing to compare to any of that.  I threw a butter knife at my sister when I was about 12.

It's not that I don't have evil thoughts . . . I just don't ACT on them.  Not the things that are mean, anyway.

You guys make me feel like an utter failure.

told a guy I didn't like french people and later found out he was French  :bluesad:

used to steal the odd pound coin out of pairs of my dads jeans (when he wasn't wearing them, obviously)

started blanking my best friend all through school once we started college because I wanted to hang out with cooler people, but the cooler people turned out didn't like me.

had a friend who was tormented by girls who all called him "chipmunk" because he kind of looked like a chipmunk, and then one day accidentally called him "chipmunk" when I got slightly angry with him about something.

nothing major, tbh

I really was never much of a law breaker minus a few petty things.  My words speak more than my actions usually.  I've said some really, really awful things to people in the past.  I've literally been known to bring people to tears.  You know, nice things like wishing death or plague on people to their face. The worst part is, I sometimes enjoyed seeing people cry after I insulted them.  I've kind of grown out of that behavior in the past few years but its still in me.  Looking back, some people I did say those things to deserved it.  Others, maybe not.  I've also had no problem holding lifelong grudges either and yes I know thats unhealthy.

The sad part was she had a horrible home life, so she really clung onto me and I treated her like crap in return. There is some serious mental illness running in that family, and she's not immune to it.

I have never met a kid that is as despicable as I was when I was a kid. I went through some really weird times where I didn't feel I fit anywhere, but I tried to fit everywhere. I was so full of hate back then, and what was in me that wasn't hate was usually some drug or another.

I married lonely widows 3 different times, and I killed each of them for their money.

Other than that, I made terrible fun of an emotionally disturbed girl in elementary school, simply to try to be popular.  To be fair to myself, I really had no idea of the impact it might have on her at the time, though I knew it was wrong.  Other than that, I shoplifted once, and a couple of times I stopped calling girls in an attempt to break up with them, hoping they'd get the hint, instead of being man about it.

used to steal the odd pound coin out of pairs of my dads jeans (when he wasn't wearing them, obviously)

I've done that to my stepdad.  He used to carry what seemed like $20 in quarters in his pants pockets.  Whenever he was out working in the garage and my mom was distracted, I'd sneak into their room and take 5 or 6 dollars.  Then I'd ride my bike down to the gas station and buy baseball cards or comic books.  Oh, and a few candy bars, too.
If he knew about it, he would've said something but he never did.  I have a feeling he really didn't know because he's the type who would flip out if he found out I went through his pockets and stole change from him.

The worst thing I've ever done was vandalize an old man's house with a buddy of mine on Christmas night in 1991.  Apparently he was visiting relatives for the holiday.  So we put on our gloves and walked through the snow to his house.
My friend broke the back door window and we went inside, took whatever we wanted and just trashed the place.  We must've caused thousands of dollars in damage.
The thing I'll always remember about that is this little black/grey poodle dog cowering in the living room corner.  It was so scared you could see it shaking from across the room.  We had been in the house, trashing it for more than 10 minutes before we realized it was there.
We didn't harm the dog.  Instead the thing actually let us pet it and it didn't bite.

I still feel guilty for doing that to the old guy's house.

So why roll your eyes?  You should feel guilty.  Maybe he's living and you could make amends?  Can you imagine how he felt to come home on Christmas to find his little world had been invaded, violated?  I'm sure he'd be grateful you didn't hurt his dog.   :bluesad:   I admire the fact that you realize that it was wrong.

I was very bad when I was young, but I realize now mostly to myself.    :bluesad:

Man, just to cover my teenage years alone would take up most of the room left on the internet ... I don't even want to think about my 20's and I'd say I was about 35 or so before I really started "chilling out". I was a troubled youth ... but damn I had fun.

Believe me, the guilt I felt after doing that lasted for a long time.
Thoughts of making amends entered my mind many times but I never acted on them.

A few months after that, the same buddy of mine and I were driving by the old guy's house and saw him.  He was standing outside of his house with that little poodle dog of his on a leash.
He looked at both of us as we drove by.

There's no way he's still alive.  He looked to be over 80 years old at the time.

Since we're airing our dirty laundry...

There is one other thing I did.

In early winter of 1994, I stayed with my friend Shelly and her husband for about two weeks in their small, cramped two bedroom trailer.  On top of that, our friends Ryan & Charlene were staying there, too.
Shelly and her husband Bill took one bedroom.  Ryan & Char took the other.  And I slept on the couch.
Adding to this was a big male golden retriever (I forget its name) and a skinny female brindle colored cat named Wicca. (after the Wiccan religion)  Shelly was/is a Wiccan.

Needless to say, it was cramped with all of us there.  I worked, so I was gone a lot and stayed out of their hair.

One night, Shelly granted me permission to do a load of laundry.  But on the condition that I put the wet towels in the dryer and then fold them after.
I started laundry after everyone went to bed.  Around 11 at night.

The washer and dryer were in the bathroom.  Directly across from them was the bathtub/shower.  There was an area under and on the sides of the tub that were enclosed, but hollow and exposed.  The cat liked to go in there all the time.  Oftentimes you'd be in the bathroom and not know it was there.  Then it would dart out from under there, right past your legs, scaring the crap out of you.
The cat would get under there and creep up to the edge and stare out at you.  It was narrow enough that it could get in there and you could see it looking at you, but you couldn't reach in and grab it.

As I was preparing my laundry, I heard a noise behind me.  I looked into the hollow area and the cat was there, looking at me.
I shooed it out of there and back into the living room.

Shelly had loaded the washer with too many towels.  Big gigantic, heavy beach towels.
To get them out, you had to bend over the washer and reach all the way down into it to pull them out.  They'd come out in big, wet heavy clumps.
Then I'd raise up, lean over and throw them in the dryer, which stood to the right of the washer.
I threw them all in, turned on the dryer then shut the lights off and went to bed.
As I was lying on the couch in the dark in my sleeping bag, I heard the washer and dryer making thumping noises.  Shelly had mentioned that they sometimes did that and that I should just ignore it.  So I did and went to sleep.

The next morning, I awoke to find that Shelly had already left for work.
I went into the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for work.  I needed a clean towel so I went to the dryer and opened it.
I started pulling out towels and saw these dark brown stains on them.  I remember saying out loud, "What the hell is this?" as I pulled them out.
I pulled out some more and when I did, I saw it.

The cat was in the dryer, deader than a doornail.

It looked like it was asleep in the fetal position.  But it wasn't asleep.  It was dead.
Its mouth had sneered up so its top fangs were exposed.  The mouth had frozen in that position.  All the hair was burnt off its ears and they were translucent.  They looked like plastic.  You could partially see through them.

Apparently, the cat had come back into the bathroom after I shooed it out, and, when I wasn't looking, leaped silently into the dryer.  I unknowingly threw heavy, wet towels on top of it.  It didn't make any noise or movement.  If I had known it was in there, I would've gotten it out immediately.  Besides, I love cats and would never harm one.

I about s**t my own pants and ran to Ryan & Char's room, opened their door and woke them up by yelling, "Ryan.  Char.  Get up!  I accidentally dried the cat in the dryer!"  (I should've knocked because they were both naked with the covers half off of them  :buggedout:)
They both burst out of bed and came to look.  Char immidiately started crying and Ryan was like, "Dude, that's f***ed up.  I heard that thumping last night but thought you had shoes in the dryer"
I was wondering what I should do, so I woke up Bill and showed the cat to him and explained what happened.
He was cool with it and didn't seem mad.  He understood it was an accident.
I handed him a big black garbage bag and he scooped the cat out into it, tied it shut and placed it on the front porch.

I had to explain to Shelly what happened and hoped that she would understand.  But she was at work and wouldn't be back until later.  Bill said he would explain it to her but that it might be a good idea to write some kind of written apology.  So I took a red marker and wrote in big letters on the large dry erase board in the kitchen:

SHELLY
I'M SORRY I DRIED YOUR CAT IN THE DRYER
PLEASE BELIEVE THAT I DID NOT MEAN FOR IT TO HAPPEN
IT WAS AN ACCIDENT
PLEASE FORGIVE ME
I'LL TALK TO YOU WHEN I GET HOME
JAMEY

Let me tell you, I was nervous as hell when I pulled up to the trailer after work.
I went inside and Shelly was sitting at the kitchen table waiting for me.  She was upset that her cat had died, but understood that I would never do anything like that on purpose.  She knew how much I liked cats and she forgave me immediately.

So yes, I have accidentally dried someone's cat in the dryer.

Dear me, there's alot of terrible, terrible things I have done, that play on my mind all the time. I don't really want to mention certain things, as they would require ALOT of explaining, backstory and the whole "if you'd been in that situation" type of stuff.

One thing that has come to mind, was when I kicked my mom in the back after she had an operation to correct a slipped disc. I think I was about 9 or 10 and she was calling me names for some reason, so I booted her and ran away. Sorry about that mom   :bluesad:

I've done a few bad things in my day, but nothing on the level that some of you have.

I used to and to an extent still illegally download software, games, music, etc.  Not as much as I did in the past but I still do to some extent.

I used to steal money from my mother and grandmother for a while.  When my parents were out of the house, or they were sleeping I get into my mother purse and take handfuls of cash from it.  She kept her $20s separate from the rest of her money so I would go right for that.  I only did it for a few months and just use the money when I needed to then that was it.  I ended up getting my PlayStation, and handful of games that way.  After a while I didn't steal from her anymore, she always though I may have taken the cash but I always told her I didn't.

A few years ago at my first job there was this female who worked in the department next to me who was about 2 or 3 years older than me.  She ended up liking me a lot and we went out to lunch once for a quick date, but I turned her down and made up an excuse and said that she wasn't my type right to her face.  That's wasn't quite the full truth though.  She was a nice person but she was really overweight and at the time I was still in High School and some of the people I worked with went to school with me so I was afraid of them spreading rumors about me since people loved to do that to me back then.  I never told her the real reason but that's was it.  I was just afraid of getting rumors spread about it

When will people learn? Frank Zappa said it best: the bigger the cushion, the better the pushin'! And I can say that, cuz I'm overweight, my wife is overweight, and my on-again off-again extracurricular girlfriend is overweight. The best part of life is learning that the only thing that matters is what you think about yourself and everybody else can go get friendly with an inanimate carbon rod.  :teddyr:

Well I was stupid and in High School, so I don't think that way any more.  My 2 month gf that I dated in college was a bit overweight, and the last two dates I went on were with people who were overweight a bit, so I don't have a problem with it now.  It was just I didn't like getting made jokes cracked at in High School about who I liked because I was notorious because I was know for being flippant in who I like.

This is going to sound strange, but in high school, when I was a borderline anorexic (had to keep a tennis weight, had a certain arrogance to me, competition with someone, long story) I sometimes honestly envied overweight girls both for the fact that in the lives they lived they could be overweight, and for the fact that their minds would let them be that way, whereas I would have had a breakdown if I felt I was fat. I was weight obsessed to the point of it being something akin to a mild mental illness. There was one stretch when I was fourteen where I ate nothing for four days and then still went out and played a three-set two-hour tennis match, which I pretty much did every weekend. The body image forced on young girls really is a destructive thing.

Sadly, people suck most of the time. During my childhood we lost three cats and two dogs to hit & runs, all that happened out front of our house. Either people don't care, rationalize, "Meh, if they didn't want it to die they should've kept it in the house" like douche bags, figure they don't have time to stop, or are too afraid of getting into trouble for fessing up. Once again, people suck most of the time. :hatred:

Just out of curiosity, does your dog do the Truffle Shuffle too? :tongueout:

Sadly, people suck most of the time. During my childhood we lost three cats and two dogs to hit & runs, all that happened out front of our house. Either people don't care, rationalize, "Meh, if they didn't want it to die they should've kept it in the house" like douche bags, figure they don't have time to stop, or are too afraid of getting into trouble for fessing up. Once again, people suck most of the time. :hatred:

yeh shocking isnt it. Hit-n-Run, str8 up...

my dad's actually built a little pet graveyard at the bottom of their garden. probably haunted now, the amount of animals that are in there - we lost a couple of dogs as well (from natural causes tho')

Once, I got so drunk I blew chunks.

The fat kid from The Goonies?! Damn, that is pretty terrible... :buggedout:

Actually, you're supposed to say something like "That's no big deal, everybody drinks too much and gets sick from time to time", where I reply with "You don't understand, CHUNKS is my DOG'S NAME".

I'd sympathize with you, ghouck, but I'm presently busy laughing at what 'nube said.

Just thought of some more.  Once I stole a Christmas tree.  And I swiped a pain pill from my grandfather when he was dying of cancer.

Shoot, after all this remembering, I'm afraid now the faces of those I've wronged will hover before me tonight when I lie down to sleep.

A long time ago, my ex and I were arguing. I shoved him (in self defense) and he proceeded to fall down the stairs outside our apartment. He broke both his legs. He blamed me, I blamed myself for being happy about it...

Isn't it terrible to feel guilty for not feeling guilty...

I used to spit on this kid during middle school with a bunch of other kids.  Not sure why I did seeing I had no real problem with him.

My mother tried to hit me after I mouthed off to her and I blocked it.  She sprained he wrist and I laughed at her.

I was pulling into a parking lot once and this old lady was in the way so I neutral dropped the car and reved the engine.  I laughed hysterically as she ran away.  Sadly I still laugh now.  But the good news is I apparently I keep good (or is it bad) company according to this thread.

In my second year of high school, the school bully was always on my case and in my face. At a rugby match in which I was taking no part, he decided to show his buddies how he would tackle me. He brought me down and I hit my head on the brick paving around the field.

I got violently angry, I saw white, not red and kicked him in the side of the head, almost like a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick ~ this guy screamed and dropped like a sack of old $hit in front of his buddies. End result, the bullies left me alone, the school bully suffered a fractured skull and was away from school for over a month, my Mom was horrified but my Dad was very pleased with me for taking a bully down.

The odd thing is that the bully and I became best friends after that and he always introduced me to pals of his as "the only guy who's ever knocked me on my ass".  :teddyr:

Just FYI, I don't actually know what a sack of old $hit looks like or what it sounds like when it's dropped, I just thought that would be a good way to describe how the bully reacted to getting his butt kicked by a nerd.  :teddyr:

If he touched you with the intent to harm you, SisterG, you should have broken more than that idiot's legs, IMO.

I grew up in a small town with a teacher for a mother and a deputy sheriff for a father, so I couldn't get away with anything anywhere. A couple of things do come to mind, though, one mean and one stupid.

In sixth grade, there was a kid named Melvin that got picked on a lot. He was one of the few who got picked on even more than me. I even picked on him. I'd done something to him (I don't remember what) and was bragging about it on the playground. He ran up behind me, arms extended, and shoved me as hard as he could to the ground. I got up and kicked him as hard as I could in the groin. He was still writhing on the ground when the bell rang, and everyone just left him there and went inside. I still feel bad about that every time I think about it.

In high school, I was leaving the parking lot after school when a friend of mine jumped up onto the trunk of my car. She was just being silly. I remember thinking momentarily about whether I should tell her to wave while I moved forward slowly, parade style, or if I should just floor it. I hit the accelerator (I drove a 1975 Malibu Classic with a 351 engine at the time, so I could accelerate quite nicely). I remember looking in the rear-view mirror and seeing her feet in the air as she tumbled head over heels. I stopped immediately and checked on her, of course, and she said she was all right, but she was obviously hurting. She didn't suffer any major injuries, thankfully, and she didn't really seem to bear me any ill will. Her mother, however, radiated ill will toward me after that.

nice story , but that bit's just reminded me of this:

about 10 yrs ago I went round to my friend's house pretty drunk and hung out for a while, then his brother came back from football practice and I decided I wanted to have a go on his brother's guitar so I knocked on his brother's door and he answered and I asked if I could have a go on his guitar but he said "no", which in my drunk mind didn't compute very well so I tried to barge myself into his room, he was fighting me off and we ended up having a mini-scuffle on their hallway which escalated into a full on fight in which I got cut on my fingers, he then locked himself inside his room and I ended up writing "DIE", in blood on his bedroom door. :bluesad: his mother came up the stairs and saw this and threw me out...lol

Then I told Mark Walberg that he should be in Max Payne movie.

Me and my cousin while still quite young were bullied by this older thug of a kid. Well one day he came across my cousin and start pounding on him not knowing I wasn't far from the scene. So I ran over to help and the bully pushed me down too. Anyways I grabbed a rock and smacked it upside his head, splitting his head open. Thank God I didn't kill him is all I can say. It was very much an heat of the moment thing. Anyways him and his buddies got me back good after that, pounding the crap outta me one day although I had to grant them I did take it too far with the rock. I think they must have been frightened by how much punishment I withstood as the works of them left me alone after that.

I let a friend's girlfriend seduce me.  They were very off-again-on-again, she was his first, he was her thirtieth or so (she was/is a sex addict), she started hinting that she wanted to bed me.  He got very panicky, but behind his back we started going at it.  When he found out he almost broke her neck by throwing her halfway across the room.  After that she dumped him for good.

She and I continued to sleep together for a while after that, but we eventually went our separate ways, and she dropped out of that particular college.

He's still obsessed with her, stalks her on Facebook...he also stalked her subsequent official boyfriends (I was just a friend with benefits) making threatening motions wearing these stupid kickboxing gloves he bought for just that purpose.

I got real drunk and p**sed on my couch. It was dark and I thought I was in the bathroom. Worse yet...my brother Glenn was slepping on it. Boy...was he p**sed!
I had some girls over at my house....I was drunk and stumbling to the bathroom...and my pants fell down. I had no underwear on! Yikes!  :buggedout:
I was drunk (this sound familiar?) and was fishing with some freinds and I ate a handful of nightcrawlers.
I was drunk in a liquer store on Long Island and was trying to purchase some whiskey-but the clerk sed 'No way-yer too drunk already.' So I went into a tirade and called him a f3cking commie and spit at him. My brother Glenn had to drag me out by throwing me over his shoulder...with me spouting obsenities the whole time. Ugh.

As a young one I once found a hidden spare key that belonged to my grandparents apartment. I used the key to snoop around in their apartment whenever they were out. One day I found a good amount of $50 bills inside a wooden box underneath a stack of books and papers inside an old closet. I actually never counted the money but it was about 4-5 inches when pressed together. That money financed my CDs, video rentals and other fun stuff for many many years and my Grandparents never suspected anything. They were well off and probably stacking extra cash because they had too much. Both died years ago but I sometimes still feel bad about stealing their money back in the day.  :bluesad:

Well... I never really done much.  I once threw a frisbee at a 9 year old who kept taunting me when I was 14.  That's pretty much it.  I'm not much a bad guy, unless you count making my dad watch Jaws 4 and making my cousin watch Empire of the Ants a very terrible thing.

Now my school friends, they are whole different stories.  Though I doubt they would compare to any of the things you guys done.

I suggested to John McCain this unknown Alaskian senator to be his running mate.
