Title: horror/blaxploitation recommendations?
Post by: ToyMan on November 15, 2008, 03:42:30 AM
i really dug jd's revenge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELYvHcIIdoA), petey wheatstraw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6A8IVHnjDY), and blacula (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvR6nfsIk3E). i've heard good things about abby (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLX6BnmtWS4), scream blacula scream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqH9eMtVwoE), and the clips for blackenstein (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxfyqFn03BI) looks great. can you folks suggest any other campy blaxsploitation/horror flicks that i've failed to pick up on?

Maybe you'll like Abby http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071095/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071095/)
It's an exorcist rip-off. I haven't seen it, but I heard it's good.

You shoulsd be able to get it for relatively cheap.

BLACK SHAMPOO (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074214/) is one of the crazier ones I've seen.  How many blaxploitation films have a hairdresser as their ultra-macho hero?  Lots of nudity and insane violence, too.  Watch out for the pool cue!

Didn't really like ABBY or SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM, but BLACKENSTEIN's really, really bad and therefore worth a viewing.

d'oh. forgot to mention that one. it's not really a horror flick, though. i mean, sure, a dude gets his johnson snipped off, but it doesn't have devils, vampires, zombies, or anything like that in it. i'd call it blaxploitation/nazisploitation.

SON OF INGAGI (1940) The first blaxploitation horror film; made thirty years before the genre even existed! During the 30s and 40s many westerns, musicals, and dramas were made with all black cast for theaters in black neighborhoods, but this is a rare example of a horror film made for that audience.

A mad scientist (the scientist is a woman!) keeps a wild apeman named N'Gina in her basement. After the scientist dies a young woman and her husband inherit her mansion, and naturally, N'Gina break loose to terrorize the cast.

Is THE THING WITH TWO HEADS (1973) considered a blaxploitation horror film? Scientists cut off racist Ray Milland's head and sew it on to Rosie Grier's body, but they don't bother to cut off Rosie's head first. When Rosie's girlfriend gets a load of her two-headed honey she asks "Have you got two of anything else?" Watching Grier deliver a knockout punch to his own puss is a highlight.

THE HOUSE ON SKULL MOUNTAIN (1974) is a blaxploitation riff on the "old Dark House' genre set in a Gothic mansion located in the mountains outside of Atlanta, GA. (). Someone is killing off the relatives gathered for the reading of an elderly woman's will. Victor French is the token white guy and Mike Evans from The Jeffersons is in it, too.

And then there's the truly bizarre VOODOO BLACK EXORCIST (1973) which is actually a Spanish-made FAKE Blaxploitation movie about a vengeful mummy (THE BLUMMY?). Several of the 'black' characters are white Spaniards in black-face.

Ah do whaddah wawnt. :tongueout:

Weird movie though. Hard to think the US Government would fund something in the ghetto called "The Peoples Army".

Oops, I missed that you were only looking for black/horror combinations.  BLACK SHAMPOO is not a horror film, though it's still worthwhile.

Maybe J.D.'S REVENGE (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074703/) ("He came back from the dead to possess a man's soul, make love to his woman, and get the Vengeance he craved!"), which I haven't seen.  There's also DEF BY TEMPTATION (1990) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099395/), which is actually supposed to be pretty good but won't have that 70s vibe, if that's what you're looking for.

i actually liked jd's revenge a lot, just because it was so over-the-top in parts.

yeah, i'm most interested in 70's-era stuff. thanks for all the suggestions, though.

If you care to venture into the plain blaxploitation AND you want cheese by the wheel-load, try Guy From Harlem or the utterly "WTF" Mr. Deathman.

For what it is worth, the fairly recent release of Abby is, from what I can tell, not complete.  There are some edits during the exorcism scene.  I can't believe there isn't a more complete version lurking around out there.

And let's not forget Dr. Black and Mr. Hyde with Bernie Casey.  Okay, it's mostly forgettable, but I love the one cop's line:  "That's a cross between The Abominable Snowman and Willie the Werewolf. "

THE GUY FROM HARLEM is a real hoot!  I think I posted some comments in here about it a long time ago.  Even the theme song is funny.

I forgot to mention that one. It's one of my favorites of the genre. The exciting finale takes place on the world-famous Watts Towers.

I remember seeing it on Elvira's Movie Macabre back in the early 80s. Elvira comment about Casey's makeup was "Hey Bernie! Come stick your face in this bag of flour and BLOW!"

got BLACK SHAMPOO through today. havent watched it yet but the synopsis on the back is hilarious.

"Jonathan is tall, muscular, black, and ballsy. His reputation as a lover has become so awesome that he is sought after almost as much in that capacity as in his experience as a hair stylist"

LOL

I'm surprised no one mentioned has mentioned 1975's 'Black Fist,' featuring a pre-'Miami Vice' Phillip Thomas. I own it, but have only watched about three quarters of it and it's pretty bad. I'll finish it soon. I also have one titled 'Manic' from around 1993 that I watched about half of. It was really horrible looking, had shoddy acting and poor sound quality. I can't wait to finish it, but I can't find it right now and I can't find information about it online. Too obscure for the internet? If anyone has information about 'Manic' from circa 1993, I'm all ears. None of them were a waste of money. Alco rocks!

the film you mentioned probably hadn't come up because i've steered the discussion back towards horror/blaxploitation films a couple of times now.

I'm sorry, it wasn't clear to me until now whether or not you ment one or the other or just hybrids (although you've implied, I guess I'm too stupid to take a hint). I'll refrain from mentioning Pam Grier or Fred Williamson.

To be fair, though, the latter film I mentioned fits your hybrid and also manages to pass itself off as an extremely amateurish psychological thriller, or its low budgeted cousin.

sorry if i came off a little snippy there.

people are making a lot of great suggestions, here. i'm remembering a lot of films that i've heard of, but never got around to seeing.

i also came across a flick called "the glove (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077614/)" (1979) starring rosey grier and john saxon that sounds pretty exploitastic, although it's not a straight-forward horror flick, from what i gather.

Let me just say this: I WANT A COPY OF BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL! Man does that crap look schlocky! Reminds me of the "Unforgivable" videos mixed with Satan and Edward Wood, Junior. I'd have private screening of that film monthly with mild altering substances and a bunch of friends. New national pasttime.
