Title: Techies come to the aid of substitute teacher in porn case
Post by: trekgeezer on November 26, 2008, 12:42:49 PM
I'm all for protecting the young ones, but this case should never have been brought. Evidently the IT person at the school was moron.

You really need to go to the link with Eckleberry's findings in the case, the poor sub was just a victim of circumstance.

That's a really depressing, awful case.  It's also one of those things that even if a teacher HAD been doing it deliberately, it's ridiculous they should face jail time for it.  They should just be fired, and at worse lose their certificate.  Forty years?  SERIOUSLY?

It's the sort of thing that I'd hazard a guess and say has happened numerous times by accident (accidental porn popups on some of the nastier sites), but most school people are smart enough to realize what is going on.

That IT guy should be pimp-slapped to within an inch of his life. That's one thing I hate is someone making false claims based on their supposed 'knowledge', without regard to the truth. There is no way that guy really believed he was right unless he just plainly didn't look into it or did and didn't know what he was looking at. He sounds like either a failure, or someone so arrogant they can't question themselves, possibly both. Unfortunately, any time more adult-oriented words like alcohol, drugs, guns, sex, or porn are in the same sentence as the word KIDS or CHILDREN, people's emotions have a tendency to take over. What's more is that any time one side or the other's whole plan hinges on ONE person's word, we need to be skeptical, doubly so when the issue is something we ourselves don't understand enough to even tell a honest, factual claim from a ludicris claim.

Those who know do.
Those who don't know teach.

I'd think that tech guy was trying to save his job at someone else's expense, & I've found the public education system plays CYA even more than these corporate criminals.

I really, really HATE that so-called proverb.  I teach history for two reasons:

1.  I love history and know it very well.
2.  I enjoy teaching.

Anyone who thinks teaching is easy has never spent a moment in front of a classroom!!!

I agree, that statement is thrown around too carelessly.  There are many teachers who could make more money in some other field but go into teaching beacuse they love it.  That said, I kind of doubt IT guys choose to work for the public education system because they want to help kids.

The sad part is that he got the proverb wrong...or perhaps it is better to call it a cliche.

It's:

Those who can, do.
Those who can't, teach.

It's unfair to apply it to teachers in a general sense, and not aimed at those in the educational system to begin with; at least in my opinion.

Certainly an over-simplification; I think it applies more to someone in a technical field or profession who teaches within that field or profession.

I was a good sales trainer (short lived) and knew quite a bit about how to close a sale and gave quite a few salespeople tools they could use to do just that, but I was not generally as good in the field as I was as a teacher.

Conversely, there were even more salespeople who were good in the field, but simply could not communicate that to others.

I think a more appropriate cliche would be:

Those who can do, do
Those who can teach, teach
Those who can do both, do either/or

Although, Indy, since it was applied in a thread involving someone in the public educational system...well...it was just taken out of context.

I don't see where it applies to you, or could even be suggested as such.

Those who know history, study it, and tell others about it. Teaching is exactly that.

Those who wear funny hats with holes in them...well...as the carpenter said about adding a second floor...that's another story. :tongueout:

Um ... why was this woman so much as reprimanded, much less fired, much less threatened with prison?  Something else must be going on here.

At first I thought it was "Trekkies" and realised my misreading just after being quite puzzled after reading the article...
