Title: Gangster Movies Post by: RCMerchant on December 04, 2008, 09:15:53 PM I recently bought a DVD from a Wal Mart bin - it's called HOLLWOOD vs the MOB. Basically it's a documentary comparing old gangster films and how they relate to the real life Mobs. Good DVD ! Check it out!
What I would like to know is...what are YOUR favorite 'Gangster" films? My top ten... !.PUBLIC ENEMY- It's Jimmy Cagney! Whatta tough little son of a b#tch! LITTLE CEASER- It's Edward G. Robinson! But....was Ricco gay? Hmm....watch it again...whatta you think? 4. WHITE HEAT-Top of the world,Ma!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjzKiEs_pHI 5. GOODFELLAS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twW_riHWz_4 6. the EXECUTIONERS-Obscure 70's gangster flick with the guy from BELA LUGOSI meets a BROOKLYN GORILLA-! Duke Mitchell! But don't let that turn you off! a GREAT ganster film! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWdfMnkByx8 7.BLACK CEASER- with Fred Williamson! Nuff sed! 8. BONNIE and CLYDE -Ok. A classic! 9.BLOODY MAMA-...Shelly Winters....DeNiro, Dern...<Don Stroud...whats not to love? And it's an AIP Pcture of course! 10.Hmmm....the ROARING TWENTIES! Bogart! Cagney! And I KNOW youv'e heard this song....! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRtBTGffiv8 Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Allhallowsday on December 04, 2008, 10:07:11 PM Some good ones, BELA...

But only see the long---i.e. the real---version. Not only is this a great gangster film, it's also maybe the greatest movie most people have never heard of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzhX2PD6Srw&feature=related Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Flick James on December 05, 2008, 11:55:40 AM 1. Goodfellas. Arguably the most true-to-life gangster film ever made. If you can, watch the commentary with the real Henry Hill and the real-life FBI agent who played himself in the movie.
2. Once Upon a Time in America. And yes, the real version. 3. The Godfather I and II. Obvious choice, perhaps, but come on, can I be the only one to include it? 4. Bonnie and Clyde. 5. Eastern Promises. It IS a gangster movie, and I thought it was amazing. But I understand there will be disagreement. 6. White Heat. About as classic gangster as it gets. 7. Scarface. Enough said. 8. Millers Crossing. I thought the Cohen Brothers made a remarkable contribution to the genre in their unique way. 9. Donnie Brasco. An underrated film, and one of the more true-to-life gangster movies. 10. The Cotton Club. I know, I know. I'll get some ribbing for that one I'm sure. It was silly and melodramatic and full of cliches, but I think that was largely intentional, but provided a charming parody of 1920's gangsters. There are so many honorable mentions. Tarantino films should be mentioned, but BT is almost his own genre, so I didn't include them in the Top 10. Carlito's Way, Mean Streets, The Untouchables, Road to Perdition, The Departed. That latter almost made it on my list. Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Allhallowsday on December 05, 2008, 01:39:47 PM ...3. The Godfather I and II. Obvious choice, perhaps, but come on, can I be the only one to include it...? No. If you look at my initial response you'll see I did. Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Psycho Circus on December 05, 2008, 02:03:31 PM Scarface and Carlito's Way do it for me :tongueout:
Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Flick James on December 05, 2008, 05:51:58 PM I missed that. Apologies, Allhallowsday.

Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: HappyGilmore on July 03, 2013, 10:15:56 PM Goodfellas takes the cake for me. Top notch.
Godfather as well as part two. Beyond that, I'm not big into them. One film I like, not really 'gangsters' per se, but some critics lump it in...Reservoir Dogs. More of a heist film, albeit without the heist. Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: zombie no.one on July 04, 2013, 04:21:51 AM Goodfellas takes the cake for me. Top notch same here. Surprised no one's mentioned CASINO. very similar vibe to GOODFELLAS (having a bunch of the same cast helps) and one of those films - like Goodfellas- I can seemingly never tire of watching Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: RCMerchant on July 04, 2013, 05:45:38 AM Check out a young Steve McQueen in the GREAT ST.LOUIS BANK ROBBERY (1959)
Dam good! So much deciet. Really great. A percurser to movies like RESIVOIR DOGS. And yes,Zombie #1,I loved CASINO,but I picked 10...that would be 11. Im amazed this thing came up after so many years. Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Trevor on July 04, 2013, 07:50:58 AM THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY: Great film.

Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Allhallowsday on July 05, 2013, 12:54:04 PM Check out a young Steve McQueen in the GREAT ST.LOUIS BANK ROBBERY (1959) I brought it up, looking at clips of KISS ME DEADLY (1955). KISS ME DEADLY is classic. Im a moron! It should be there fer sure! Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: Allhallowsday on July 05, 2013, 02:43:30 PM Kick me deadly! Hey Ron, (or should I say MORE-RON?) I was the first one to respond to your thread - nearly 5 years ago (my how time flies) so we did talk about this movie a long time ago. It's a great one! 2. The Godfather, Part II 3. Mean Streets 4. Goodfellas 5. Bonnie and Clyde 6. Angels with Dirty Faces 7. Casino 8. Once Upon a Time in America 9. The Friends of Eddie Coyle 10. Dillinger (Warren Oates was born to play Dillinger!) Honorable mention: Lepke. This is a cheesy guilty pleasure of mine. Tony Curtis chews up the scenery with his hammy acting and the movie shows us nothing that we haven't seen before (in much better movies). But there's something about this movie that keeps me coming back for more. I own the DVD and I've seen this movie at least a dozen times. Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: tracy on July 09, 2013, 02:56:20 PM The Godfather I and II
Angels With Dirty Faces White Heat Dillinger Little Caesar Brother Orchid....this one has an interesting twist and by some isn't considered a real gangster film but I love it Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: ChaosTheory on July 10, 2013, 03:17:36 PM GOODFELLAS
GODFATHER II CARLITO'S WAY EASTERN PROMISES KNOCKAROUND GUYS AMERICAN GANGSTER I need to see more of the Cagney movies :/ Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: The Burgomaster on July 11, 2013, 04:53:45 PM Another one I enjoy is THE GRISSOM GANG. It has some nice, oddball performances. It's sort of like BONNIE AND CLYDE meets THE WALTONS meets THE ADDAMS FAMILY.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD, so watch this clip with your eyes closed . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhSVVVs13cQ Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: RCMerchant on July 22, 2013, 07:49:33 AM Another one I enjoy is THE GRISSOM GANG. Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: ralfy on August 13, 2013, 03:21:09 PM Sorry, by "gangster" I was thinking of members of a gang.
Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: major jay on August 13, 2013, 07:46:46 PM This week is mob week on AMC.
Right now they're in the midst of showing THE GODFATHER trilogy , and earlier today they showed BUGSY, starring Warren Beatty, and I have to say it was pretty good. Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: A_Dubya on August 19, 2013, 09:11:58 PM Goodfellas, King of NY and Carlito's Way are in my top 3.
Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: TEENAGER THOR on August 19, 2013, 09:35:27 PM I am amazed at the number of people who say they love crime/gangster movies and then never have seen any of the top 4. Those 4 movies define the gangster genre (with the Godfather of course).
Title: Re: Gangster Movies Post by: messedup on January 22, 2014, 09:22:19 PM Alot of good ones were already mentioned so I have to pick some not everybody knows.
For one there is Lawless. A pretty good movie made in 2012 with Tom Hardy and Shia Lebeauf. Also in 2013 there was a really great southkorean movie called "The New World" with Choi Min-Shik (Old Boy, I saw the Devil etc.) And if you see Gangsters as "Organized Crime" there are also alot of Yakuza-Movies to mention. I'm thinking about alot of the Takeshi Kitano-movies (Sonatine, Brothers, Outrage, Hana-Bi etc.) or the classic Yakuza Papers-series (Battles without Honor and Humanity etc.) by Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale). |
