Title: Willie Dynamite (1974)
Post by: Andrew on January 05, 2009, 07:20:07 PM
I had previously ruined one of Katie's childhood memories (on purpose) by showing her Microwave Massacre (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/microwavem/) because it has the voice of Frosty the Snowman saying "I'm so hungry, I could eat a wh**e!"  This time, by accident, I killed another.

Willie is the best-dressed pimp I have ever seen.  He has an incredible outer coat that is mauve-purple or some other impossible color.  The coat also has white fur in parallel lines, and he has a matching hat big hat!  If that was not enough, Willie also has a shining lime green pants suit with gold shoes.

Out of all the cool 70s pimps, Willie is my fashion hero.

Now, Willie is not just any New York City pimp.  He is the #2 pimp, but he aims to be #1.  He works his girls in the best hotel, dresses them in fancy clothes, and keeps his b****es in line.  Those hookers are dressed...for suck-cess!  Every seven minutes another john comes off the production line, and the girl moves on to the next.  It's perfect capitalism (imagine Willie laying this all out and snapping his fingers as each john should be getting done).

I think it was right after Willie got done smacking one of his hoes who was not earning her keep that Katie recognized the pimp.  "Andrew, that is Gordon...from 'Sesame Street!'  Oh no!"

The movie tries to change gears between pimpdom awesomeness and portraying the ugly side of the meat market (the man comes down on Willie, and other pimps start sniffing around his turf), so it doesn't really work as a whole.  There are still some great scenes, and the soul-shaking realization that Gordon from "Sesame Street" is Willie never gets old.  It's Gordon, smacking a hooker and waxing eloquent about his stable of fine b****es!

I'm shocked Katie hasn't learned not to let you select the DVD for "movie night" yet.  That woman must have the patience of a saint!  Seeing Gordon as a pimp would shock even me!

I saw this one not long ago.  lamb!! this is lamb!!

"this movie reminded me of chick tracts, the once ubiquitous born again christian comic book series. they were sort of spiritual porn. You'd see some evil person stopped in their tracks and shown the error of their ways and brought into the fold of God in one conversation. during the seventies, it was drawn by another guy who was a way way better artist than Chick himself and featured pimps, gangsters, bikers and all sorts of characters. This isn't really a blaxploitation movie. In fact, it's preachiness is darn near intolerable at some points, but it is still pretty funky. Willie is a compelling villain and he and his star trek like multicultural stable are very colorful even if they are doomed at every turn due to the writers heavy handed script. It doesn't get overtly religious though. But if this were really blaxploitation Willie would be more of a hero. has that amateurish blaxpolitation feel with not enough editing / music/ production filling in the gaps between words and actions. "

Yeah, Lester, I remember that review, good thoughts.  But you didn't mention Willie was played by the guy from Sesame Street.  That's a silly little trivial detail that suddenly makes the film stick out from the pack.

Willie's wardrobe is almost fly enough to merit viewing the film on the value of his fashion alone.  Otherwise, the film piddles about.  It has some moments, but its a confused mess of what the writer wanted to bring across.  What makes it stand out is Gordon as the crazy pimp.  That alone makes it something that demands you see it (if you watched Sesame Street as a child).
