Title: Stuff You Blew Money On That You Regret
Post by: Mr. DS on January 15, 2009, 12:20:46 PM
Meanwhile on the opposite ends of the "Making You Fellow Board Members Jealous" thread I started, what are some things you're ashamed to admit you've bought.  Or perhaps something you were so hopped up on when you bought it that you didn't realize what a waste it would be.

My ultimate example of this is buying all of the carded action figure from Star Wars Episode 1.  This was before the movie came out and I went to a midnight toy sale.  It was an awesome time but seeing how badly the film sucked, I would love to have my money back...minus the Darth Maul and Sidious figures.  Double for the Jar Jar figure.

Wow, I was just about to start the exact same thread!!  :buggedout:

Let's say I've splurged on maybe 100 records too many, that turned out to be naff. Bought loads of jeans and shirts that I don't wear and I've bought guitar FX pedals that I don't use either. I wasted tons of cash on my ex-girlfriend too and it wasn't worth it at all in the end. Booze has taken many £'s from me.  :bluesad:

I seem to do alright, I don't buy things I don't really want, , and when I do buy something I really want, I usually pay for the little extras so I'm not saying "I wish I would have gotten it with the X option". Nothing worse than buying soomething and not liking it.

This is not by design though: I'm a procastinator at heart, and have a bit of ADD and poor memory, so when I impulsively want something, I usually procastinate until I either forget about it or the impulse passes. The only things that survives are things I really want. So long as I'm not SWI (Shopping While Intoxicated), I do OK.

I did buy an EGT gauge for my quad recently and the day AFTER I bought it, I finally found the one I really wanted, , which I didn't know that made. The one I bought is digital, I wanted a needle gauge with a warning syetem, , I couldn't find an off-road capable needle gauge so I settled for digital. Bummer. .

               Dwarfs

For 40K I collected :

I miss hanging out in Games Workshop in the late 90's :bluesad:

For Fantasy I started Vampire Counts, Orcs, and Chaos.
For 40K I started Tyranids.

I just didn't have the money or attention span to see it through (I call it the "OOH! Shiny! Syndrome") and not enough people around to play with.

Now I just paint miniatures for use with RPGs.

Sisters of Battle were the coolest but they were pricey to collect. :teddyr:
GW always used to post tournaments for people, so I found it easy to find people to play against.

I now play Warhammer on the X Box 360.

Children of the Living Dead DVD- $20
Why say a movie is starring Tom Savini when he dies in the first fifteen minutes? It's the only part of the movie worth watching, and only because Tom Savini kicks ass.  The rest of the movie is tedious at best, and shows that the writer and director had no sense of how to make a good zombie movie.

Growlanser 2 and 3 for PS2- $50
Wound up getting rid of this one.  Anytime I hear the name, I get dry heaves.

Hexen for PS1- $60
It's a good game for PC.  It's complete crap on PlayStation.  I believe I got rid of this game some time ago, and I don't remember how.  Perhaps that's a good thing.

A box of Ravnika (sp?) cards for M:TG- $70
I soon quit playing M:TG afterward.  I needed to make a huge budget cut, and I wasn't cutting out b-movies or games.  I think I gave a lot of those cards away.

Spore for PC- $50
I don't regret buying it so much.  It's not a bad game, but it certainly isn't worth $50.

I almost regret buying a PSP, only because I've purchased about a dozen games for it and only wound up keeping three so far.

1969 Dodge Superbee - don't know what I bought that for.  Already have a '70 Mustang I never drive.  Oh well, I sold the 'Bee for a couple grand more than I bought it for  :teddyr: Bought a really nice telescope once.  Used it about three times.  Bought a CD player for the car - one of those that holds about 10 disks and goes in the trunk.  That thing was laying around the laundry room for about a decade.  Digitech Whammy/wah pedal for electric guitar - that sounded awful.  Still sitting under the stairs in brand new condition.  Carvin guitar amp - got a good deal on it.  Had no use for it, the Peavey sounds 100 times better.  Good grief, I've barely scratched the surface of my useless junk collection.

Oh, I didn't think of video game failuers. Diablo II, , an absolutele wretched game compared to the original. I've always said Dungeon Siege was made exactly how Diablo II should have been. Would have been $55 for three coasters had I not smashed them.

Daikatana is another that sucked (it CAME with a note saying it wouldn't work unless you downloaded and installed a near-100 meg patch, , back in the days when broadband was still very scarce).

Within the last years or so I bought Unreal Tournament 3, , which is a total disgrace compared to UT2004. I spent around $55 on the special edition because it had tutorials and tools that help with modding and help converting some of my UT2004 mods to it. The game sucks so bad I don't feel it's worthy of my efforts. Bummer because I bought it largely for it's value as a creative outlet. . .

I also just remembered a Samsung POS MP3 player I paid about $120 that went all daffy after about three weeks.  I hated that thing.  Not only did it screw up, but it seemed no matter what the equalizer, it played everything with extreme amounts of bass and everything else was actually toned most of the way down.  On top of that, it wasn't some simple drag-and-drop method getting videos on the thing.  I swear I had to open several programs, convert files almost every time I used it, sometimes even edit files, sacrifice a dog in the middle of my apartment to Gorgalon, the dark god of confusing and irritating technology; and go back in time and shoot the president every time I wanted to load a short video on there, and even then there was no guarantee that it would load the whole video and not mysteriously stop after the first ten seconds.

So yeah.  F**k you, Samsung!

Yeah, I'll have to join in with the "ex" category which I didn't even think of but I'd rather not go on a rant about it.  Theres not enough space on the board for it.  Lets just say for every buck I've spent, I've had 10 cents spent on me.

Okay, so it was only $15, but I bought this Lost poster once (because... I LOVE LOST), and then found the same poster elsewhere in much better quality and for about half the price. I dunno why, but I'm still bitter about that.  :tongueout:

Mine was  a 7 string Conklin bass that I bought for 800 bucks a few years back. I was more enamored from finally getting my hands on a 7 straing bass rather than actually making sure that I wasn't buying a lemon.

Unfortunately, the thing started to fall apart on my as I played the heck out of it. First the pickups completely failed and you can't just walk into a music/guitar shop and find 7 string pickups. They're about the size of a bar of soap on this bass. Also, even though I was able to buy strings for my 6 string Ibanez bass in a store, I had to special order the strings for my 7 string. The strings cost me about 50 dollars each pack!  There was also a problem with the tension rods in the neck. Since the neck was so huge someone who owned it prior had adjusted the tension rods wrong which caused the neck to start warping.

Dude let me tell ya.  The first day I brought it home, the curse from the underworld clips that came with the system busted on me.  I had to send them in for new ones.  I should have ran back to the store at that point.

College. I'll graduate, spend the rest of my life paying for it, and still never get a decent job. Also, I only ever take three classes at a time, and the last few times I ended up getting back the whole financial aid refund and blowing it, instead of cancelling it like I should have.

Also, just before christmas, I won a portable dvd player with screen at a charity auction. Bring it home, works fine...a few weeks later, it stops reading dvds. It wont even read the lens cleaner I bought. I spent 60 bucks on it ,which makes it really not even worth spending the money to get it fixed. At least it was for charity.

Something else, and I may end up depressing a lot of people here, but someone recently told me that the average lifespan of a dvd - and this is assuming they have been kept in pristine condition - is only 10 to 15 years. After that, the magnetism wears off and they become useless. That means my collection of horror and anime will be doomed, and all the money I spent on boxed sets down the drain.

You've been mislead. The expected longevity of dye-based DVD-R and DVD+R is anywhere from 20 to 250 years, the same as CD-R discs depending on the quality of the dye, (i.e. Gold is better than Silver) this is for burned DVD/r's ... pressed DVD's should not go bad within your lifetime, or your kids, or their kids.

The other day a friend of mine and I were talking about all the money we've wasted on stupid stuff ad how our life would be now if we had all that money back. Money wasted on booze and women when younger to boats and motorcycles when older ... it was really a depressing thought.

College is never a waste of money (or perhaps time); if you learned something from your classes then you evolved into a better human being. It is however, horrible to have mass amounts of student loans and then not be able to get a decent job to help pay them off. A friend of mine has a bachelors in Philosophy and about thirty grand in student loans; he works at a truck-stop serving coffee. But then again, i havent met alot of people with degrees in philosophy that were actually able to use it(the degree) to help them get a job  :bluesad:. I also have two friends that have degrees in Graphic Arts, one works at Hibbitts; the other at Cracker Barrel (sadly he has a Masters).
Just out of curiosity what kind of degree are you getting?

I wouldn't say that I regret buying some of the stuff that I did get, but it's stuff that I will admit wasn't my best choices.  Buying a lot of the DVD's that I ended up being over the last few years.  Most of them were movies that I never seen before and wanted to see them.  I ended up selling most of them online and getting some money back but not enough to cover everything I spend on for DVD's.  I will also admit that some of the games that I have purchased in the past were not always my best choice.

I have to disagree there, I've known people that have learned a little, but nothing that even comes close to justifying the amount of money they spent, thus that money was wasted. I don't agree that just knowing something today that you didn't yesterday necessisarily makes you a BETTER person, it can, and often does, but it's not a given. I know at least one person that has been "educated into an a***ole" by college, that person is NOT a better person than they were. The guy made $15.00 an hour and was happy before college, and now makes ~$10.00 an hour and is miserable, he makes less because "with his education, he's holding out for a management position". He'll never get one because he lacks actual job experience, and he arrogantly looks down his nose at pretty much everybody, who is going to hire HIM as a manager?
Funny that philosophy degrees are mentioned, when I worked in the shipyard, we had a guy with a degree in philosophy as a laborer. All that education and he worked cleaning crap-tanks amongst other things, for ~$10.00/hr. His 'philosophy' was the fact he was making $10.00/hr while us less-educated people were making closing in on twice that was proof thet system was screwed. Basically his education led him to believe he has cause to be miserable. .. money well spent there.

I see what you're saying and largely agree, , except for the word "Never" as it is used here. . .

I wish I could recoup the money I spent on a lot of games and toys I got for my kid. All most of these items do is collect dust since she prefer to play video games. Even subscriptions to some of those are a waste. I got my daughter a subscription to some Barbie game that she begged for and a week later she stopped playing it.

Yeah this is the 21st century it's high time they do the paying. I use to go to bars and wait by the waitress station and when the bar tender would set up the drinks I'd grab one or two or three when they weren't looking. so yeah I guess there is a way to get when they aren't looking ... just depends on the bar set up.
Of course this was over 20 years ago before there was cameras everywhere (Hello George Orwell).

Many bars will give you a free drink on your birthday. When I was in the Army a guy in my unit was friends with someone that made the ID cards: He got his friend to make him 365 IDs cards, one with a different day of the year as his birthday. He'd grab whichever showed that day as his birthday and go drinking for free. It was pretty cool, and in Anchorage there were so many bars they never caught on.

Last year I bought a used Sig 9mm handgun. Since I was a teenager i have loved the Sigs and they are just too pricey to buy brand new. I saw one that was used at a decent price and had a little wear on the bluing. I bought it....what a waste. It was a bulky POS and just wasn't what I had envisioned over all the years. I traded it at a loss for something else that i am much happier with.

I spent alot of money on eBay on a pair of underwear that Ernest Borgnine supposedly wore while filming The Vikings. But I dunno, I just don't see Ernie wearing a small women's leopard print thong. Maybe Tony Curtis sure, but Ernie....

Alright, seriously I've blown way to much money on gym memberships that I only used a few times. Maybe at least $1000. You always tell yourself that if you spend the money that will motivate you to go, but that doesn't really happen. Now I just chug around the neighborhood and do push-ups.
