Title: 300 sequel/prequel? Oh my...
Post by: Joe the Destroyer on January 25, 2009, 03:09:23 PM
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1253863/

I couldn't find any topics on this, but I thought I'd post it here.

I'll be open-minded about The Descent 2.  I was even willing to be open-minded about Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat before it got canned.  Something tells me this will be another Grease 2, or maybe even another Matrix Reloaded.

I did hear somewhere that this will be a prequel, but I still don't feel enthused to go see it.  I suppose I'll have to wait for a trailer, but the idea of this just makes me want to scream.  The first movie felt so definitive and final that doing another would just be unnecessary, even in the case of a prequel.

And what is it with prequels?  It's like they couldn't think of any good sequel ideas, so they decided to go back a step.  I hear they're doing the same thing with The Host 2 and The Ring 3 (which kind of makes sense, since I'll most likely be a remake of Ringu 0: Birthday), and a few other movies that I cannot remember.  I think I even heard somewhere that Dario Argento was toying with a Three Mothers prequel.

I'm not going to say let's march in the streets and get this turkey canned.  I am saying that I'll wait for a trailer before making any judgments, but the idea just seems atrocious, like doing a prequel to Cemetery Man (no, one is not in development).

I should preface this by noting, despite having this on DVD, I've only caught bits and pieces off satellite and wasn't very impressed by what I saw.  Yet this does make one scratch one's head.  After all 300 bears no resemblace to history thus it leaves one to wonder, with morbid curiosity, what Frank Miller's crazed imagination will dream up since he can't exactly explore Hellenic history since he seems to either A) be totally ignorant of it, or B) not give a Owl's hoot about it.  Perhaps in the prequel/sequel Miller will show the founding of Sparta from, say, Mu or Lemuria or Atlantis, or maybe he'll throw some UFOs into the mix or, no, even better, Spartans fighting dinosaurs!

Yes.  I can see it now: The prequel opens with some droning narration recounting the founding of Sparta as it shows an volcano erupting gobs of red-orange hot lava as a massive continent slides into the sea and, lo, a few ships ride the waves ahead of a pyrcoclastic flow to the far shore of what will become Sparta. The montage continues as it shows half-naked Spartan warriors fighting off hordes of raptors to claim the land as a cut scene fast forwards to a aerial view of the city and then. .  Then. .

The Gods in their UFO/chariots arrive to kick the plot up a notch.

"300" was not intended to be historically accurate.  It's an exaggerated version told be Delios in order to inspire the Greek troops at Plataea (as revealed at the end).

One rumor I'd heard about 300 II, was that it would cover the Battle of Artemisium, which took place concurrently with the Battle of Thermopylae (and really, the actions of Themistocles' Athenian navy made Leonidas' last stand possible by tying up the Persian supply lines).

Of course, that's just this historian's two drachma.
