Title: Favorite Albums From The 90s
Post by: Mr. DS on January 28, 2009, 08:57:14 PM
Its hard to believe the 90s, if they indeed follow the current trends of other decades, may be become retro in the next few years.  Although I wasn't fond of a ton of music during that time, I fell in love with several albums (most I still have in heavy rotation on my Ipod) and bands of the time.

While walking to and from classes in college, it simply didn't feel right without my headphones on.  Here are some of my favs that I spun (and still spin) the hell out of, feel free to share yours.

White Zombie - La Sexorcisto Devil Music Vol 1
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/21/White_Zombie_La_Sexorcisto_Devil_Music%2C_Vol._1.jpg)
B-movie influenced mixed with hard rock you can dance to...I found perfection in this band.

Alice In Chains - Facelift
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/43/Alice_In_Chains-Facelift.jpg)
I've always loved AIC.  I think Layne and Jerry had one of the best vocal harmonies in rock.

NIN-Broken
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/14/Nin-broken.jpg)
Although it didn't have a lot of tracks, pretty much every song was a kick in the nuts.

Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/12/PanteraVulgarDisplayofPower.jpg)
They had quite and attitude on this CD and I liked it.

Stone Temple Pilots - Core
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/19/Stonetemplepilotscore.jpeg)
Ok fine, maybe not everyone digs this band.  I LOVE this album.  Not really for the popular tracks but rather much of the lesser heard ones.

Korn - Self Titled
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/16/Korn-Korn.jpg)
Although this band got progressively much worse as time went on IMHO, I've always thought this album rocked.

The Crow Soundtrack
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/72/The_Crow_soundtrack_album_cover.jpg)
I love the mix of bands on this album.  All with original songs too.

Ok, I'm done reliving my college soundtrack for now...your turn...

One Fierce Beer Coaster by Bloodhound Gang.  Funny 'alt rap/rock' album.  I like all their stuff, but this was good.

The Slim Shady LP by Eminem.  A great major label debut by a talented songwriter, in my opinion.  Just a sample of what was to come.

Bad Hair Day by "Weird Al" Yankovic.  Not only was it my first true taste of his music, but it made me look up some novelty music of old, like Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Cheech and Chong, and so forth.

Dirt by Alice in Chains.  Their best album, in my opinion, and probably the best 'grunge' album altogether.

probably nirvana before they became popular. I remember listening to them on a friends cassette tape in the back of a camero and went out to get a copy of the tape straight away. Even tho i wasn't really into the grunge scene having just been one of the metal chicks. But as soon as they hit mainstream popularity i got nautious
and was over them.

The same way i was over metallica when they sold out. And when enter sandman was playing in every preppy 15 year olds brand new car their daddy bought them i never penned the bands name on my jacket sleeve again

Here's the thing.  I like Nirvana, really, I do.  But, the fact that for some reason, they became "THE BAND' of that timeframe, of that genre, eh.  Bugs me.  In retrospect, and some people may disagree, I honestly feel that bands like Alice in Chains (best of the grunge scene), as well as Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were much better than Nirvana.

Alice In Chains should be the ONLY band remembered from that period.

I think it's because they're the band we could officially say launched the grunge scene. They hit mainstream popularity in a big way. While some bands were already singing this type of music, it just hadn't caught on yet. People were still hanging on to the current rock of the times. After that came a slew of copycat bands with their look or sound - or if anything it gave bands of that genre a spotlight since a new type of music seemed to be launched.

To be honest i never got into the grunge scene, nirvana was probably one of the only bands of that genre during that time period I liked. I think i went a decade listening to classic rock and all that. Only now do I like some of the current bands and ironically because they have an 80's techno or punk feel

Not counting compilations (lots of great compilations released in the 90s, including the complete Robert Johnson):

Tom Waits, The Black Rider

Royal Fingerbowl, Happy Birthday, Sabo!

Curiously, all of the above got bad or mediocre reviews...

I was born at the beginning of the 90s so I wasn't able to pick these up when they were first released.  However, I got them and really like them now.
