Title: What movie do you think everybody hates?
Post by: InformationGeek on February 01, 2009, 03:50:45 PM
I saw a similar thing on the Good Movies Board and I got interested a doing a topic like this, but to see if there is a movie everybody agrees on that is dreadful.  To quote Rev. Powell on that topic board:

There's no movie that someone doesn't hate, and there's no movie, however bad it might be, that someone doesn't love.  This board is continuing proof of the last part.

While I agree with you (For example, millions of people hate Delta Farce, I like it alot), I am still interested in seeing if there is a movie out there that we all universally agree that we all hate.  I'll open the topic by tossing out four movies that I despise:
Troll 2
Nothing but Trouble
Jaws: The Revenge
Frogs

I've sadly only seen Batman & Robin and The Cable Guy.  I've never seen the rest.  I don't agree with you on The Cable Guy, but I agree with you a lot on Batman & Robin.  What was Joel Schumacher trying to do with that film?  I didn't even like it when I was younger, though I admit I like Batman Forever.

I like the Postman and The Cable Guy. The songs were good in Blues Brothers 2000, it was everything else that was lame. Hate the kid.
I also hate Frogs :hatred: and From Dusk Till Dawn 2 (I liked the third one, though.)

Star Wars Episode 2, Attack Of The Clones

Please tell me no one here (or anywhere for that matter) likes this...I'll be saddened.

Exorcist II

I'll come clean and say I like this film for it's awfulness.

Quote
Batman & Robin

I will support that even though its awful, its no even a likeable "awful".

I like it, but I only like for all the actions scenes, talking scenes on Kamino, and the ending.  Otherwise, I was fairly bored for a bit of the movie and I didn't care for the romance parts (When I watch Star Wars, I don't care about romance, even in the originals).  This, Episode 1, and Episode 3 are the only Star Wars films I've seen in theaters, wasn't born during the 80s or later 70s to catch any of the original films.  Too bad.

Arguably yes but I think AOTC was just so forgettable.  Granted much of what I remember from Phantom Menace  was Jar Jar, but at least I remembered something from it.

One movie I'll nominate:
Barney's Great Adventure.  NOBODY with a right mind frame will or can watch that thing all the way through, little kids included.

The Cable Guy
I quite like that movie, actually.  Problem is, it's not bad.  People expected it to be lighter Jim Carrey fare in a similar vein to Ace Ventura or The Mask.  But when audiences saw it, it was a bit darker than what they expected.  Not the scripts fault or the directors fault.  Great movie, for what it was.

I saw a similar thing on the Good Movies Board and I got interested a doing a topic like this, but to see if there is a movie everybody agrees on that is dreadful.  To quote Rev. Powell on that topic board:

Nothing but Trouble
I agree with all your choices except for this little charmer.  Maybe I have no taste, but I like it, and watch it whenever it's on the tube.

Ugh, don't remind me of that movie.  I saw once when I younger.  The only thing that I remembered liking about that movie was this guy who could make food inside of his truck as he drove.  I don't like it and sadly I watched it 3 times, but luckily I only watched the whole movie through beginning to end once.

Here's a nice nugget of trivia I read in an article for Rolling Stone magazine: Trey Parker, co-creator of tv show South Park was offered the chance to direct Barney's Great Adventure.  At the time, he had just finished the movies Cannibal! The Musical (cannibals who sing and dance), and Orgazmo, (about a Mormon who becomes a porn star.)  Apparently, these are films worthy of directing the feature film debut of a dinosaur targeted to 6 year olds.

Well, three I hate:

NORTH (1994) Rob Reiner's extremely painful 'comic' quest of a boy in search of the perfect parents. Famous today for Roger Ebert's review "I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it." I don't always agree with Ebert, but he's spot on with this one.

PLANET OF THE APES (2001) Tim Burton's "re-imagining" of the 1968 classic. Burton annoyingly twists plot points of the original and throws in a baffling SURPRISE! ending. Burton further insulted audiences by hinting they were too dim to see the brilliance of his ending. I'm still trying to figure out why he made chimp Helen Bonham Carter look like Michael Jackson.

BOXING HELENA (1993) David Lynch's daughter's directoral debut. Julian Sands systematically amputates a beautiful woman's (Sherilyn Fenn) arms and legs so she will never leave him. Art Garfunkle is in it, too. About as unpleasant and uncomfortable as listening to your best friend's parent's fight. The producers famously sued Kim Basinger for a million bucks for dropping out of this one. She got off easy.

There are people on here who will defend MONSTER A GO-GO, SALO and TITANIC.

If someone (other than the director's mother) can love those movies, then there must be at least one fan for every movie!

I've steered away from most of the train wrecks mentioned on this thread.  The only one I've see is EPISODE II, which may not have been great but seemed pretty good after EPISODE I!

Judging from all the threads I've ever read here on this board over an eight year period, I'd have to say "Manos: The Hands of Fate (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/manos/)".

I have yet to hear anyone say anything good about that movie.
(except for maybe Torgo  :tongueout:)

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I actually enjoyed Attack of the Clones.  Yeah, the script and acting were beyond awful, but the action and special effects were fun.

I'll nominate the remake of Rollerball.  And the remake of Dukes of Hazzard.  And Death Tunnel.

Phat Girlz

That movie was a trap! The title screamed "Hey! funny movie about being fat but it's made by fat people so it's not going to be offensive to fat people!" and then not only was it NOT funny but I'm not even overweight and I felt fat after watching it AND depressed (maybe that was Mo'Nique's evil intention?).

I think Manos: Hands of fate (or Mangos: Cans of Fruit, if you prefer) is probably the winner.  Also, from what I've researched, Black Devil Doll From Hell is pretty much universally despised.

Of course, there may be some demented individuals who like these movies, but they are absolutely horrendous.

You know, I must say that Manos is the worst movie I have ever saw.
I, however, do not hate it. Not since the fourth viewing.
It's nothing like I've ever seen before. It's like madness on film.
It's a void filled with insanity and bad lounge music. When I watch it I feel like I'm in a Lovecraftian story...
It is something that you watch alone, at midnight, and you howl at the moon...
I have embraced Manos: The hands of fate.
And now, I should probably stop typing before you all declare me legally insane.

Hey, I may not be the most prolific guy aaaround here, but I think I've made it clear enough I consider myself one of the few genuine fans of MANOS. :tongueout: Again, I think it had a good atmosphere, very dreamlike, even if it was unintentional. Plus, it was made with the best intentions, to show that good low-budget filmmaking was possible!

I agree - I have a hard time expressing pure hatred for MANOS like I do for some big budgeted navel gazing messes such as, say, Burton's PLANET WITH SOME APES.

If you approach it with the right frame of mind MANOS can be considered a masterpiece of surreal cinema.

Another vote for not hating MANOS.  It's something I'd be perfectly willing to watch again, though it's not high on my list.

Movies I hate tend to be those I think are morally bad: "shock" movies that exploit cruelty, rape, etc.   Movies like THE DEVIL'S REJECTS or LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.  But I know that many people love these types of movies, and not always out of bad motives.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I also hate "feel-good" movies that ring false.  GOOD WILL HUNTING is a perfect example.  Again, there are more people who absolutely love this kind of movie than hate it.

Boring movies are just that: boring.  They're forgettable, but not worthy of working up a good hate (though I might make an exception for HEAVEN'S GATE).

I liked that movie. I can see where some would dislike the film because it totally flies in the face of their beliefs since it has a Christian like afterlife as the main setting for the film. (Not trying to start a religion debate cause no one is going to change anyone's mind and it would just cause a lot of animosity if one gets going.)  But as they say, one person's trash is another person's treasure.

I can understand the dislike for the bleakness of everyone dying but sort of hard to have a movie set entirely in an afterlife setting if everyone is still alive. So all the deaths are a needed plot device in the film for the main setting to make sense.

Nope, not possible --
As has been said here:  "There's going to be at least ONE fan for every film!" -- I even know people who like ROBO-C.H.I.C!!
I like anything with Ray Milland in it, so yes, I even like FROGS -- sorry, doggett . . .
I'm dead curious about PLUTO NASH, as it is probably the closest thing to a universally despised film I've heard of --
I've never seen BATTLEFIELD EARTH, but am yet to encounter anyone who liked this either -- though I have no doubt they exist --

I,too, like MANOS.And FROGS was ridicoulsly silly fun. I also like drek like MONSTER A GO GO,MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL,and the ilk. I hated the PLANET OF THE APES remake,ARMEGGEDON,PULSE,SAW,HOSTEL,ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW,and many other films that alot of people who think they know about my taste in movies is. Not a big fan of M.Night Shallywhacker's movies either. One movie I havn't seen...but have not heard anybody EVER defend is LEONARD PART 6. I don't know much about it....except it stars Bill Cosby.
I absoulutly refuse to rewatch STAR WARS or any of it's sequels. I have a personal chip on my shoulder for them...as it ruined FAMOUS MONSTERS of FILMLAND for me. After it came out, every other issue was STAR WARS this and STAR WARS that...even the once cool ads sold nothing but Star Wars junk. The hype made me sick to death of it. I saw the movie in the theater once,on it's initial run in the theater. I thought the movie was ok...at first...and then I devolped a deep dislike of anything STAR WARS.

That said...I now a girl who thinks GREASE 2 is the best movie ever made. I find it unbearable....but more power to her!

I'm surprised by a lot of things in this board on how people like some films I thought everyone would hate.  Well, I think I should bring out the big guns now.  I like to say that the following three films are ones that no one likes:

Meet the Spartans
Epic Movie
Disaster Movie

I have of lot friends who like this stupid kind of comedy and bad jokes, but even they think these movies are extremely horrible.  Heck, I never heard anyone in my high school or anyone I know support these films.  What about you guys?

He's an avid reader...and his favorite movies seem to be NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS,the Leone/Eastwood trilogy,ABBOTT AND COSTELLO meet FRANKENSTIEN,and MAD MONSTER PARTYand DEATHRACE 2000. He had a period a few years back when he would watch the INVISABLE MAN(1933) at least once a week! AT LEAST. Sometimes more! Crazy kid.... :bouncegiggle:

My mommy thought the opening parts of Meet The Spartans were hilarious, (un?)fortunately, we had to turn it off prematurely as my sister was in the room :tongueout:

M. Night has to be my favorite director, and in my opinion, his movies are some of the most underrated ever made.  although the plots are often a little thin, the filmography, music, acting, and script all work to create films that speak to me more than any other movies I've seen.  Then again, I'm pretty weird.  I have yet to meet people who share my tastes in things.

I can understand your liking of his films...cool! Just not my cup'o'tea. I have to give him credit, though, for not taking the easy way out and throwing in  cars blowing up and lotsa stupid CGI.  Which reminds me....
I loathe I AM LEGEND!....and most Adam Sandler films.Something about Sandler makes me wanna slap him. Mebbe it started with his Sloppy Joe song....

I'll nominate:
Body Slam!.  Most everyone who even remembers that movie hates it.  I can't say I completely hate it, as I like Rowdy Roddy Piper and Dirk Benedict, so having the two together in one flick was awesome.

Just the names alone are cringe worthy.  Then you see the trailers, and the chills run up your spine.  How people like them, I don't know.  But the Wayans Bros. have a new movie coming out in that vein: Dance Flick.

Dance Flick!?  Oh my God, just when America began to recover from Disaster Movie, here comes this film!  Luckily, they move the date I heard from Feburary to August.  With this, we should have enough time to recover more and brace ourselves for when it arrives.  You know, you figure by now that film makers would run out of areas to spoof.

I've never seen or heard of Body Slam, I've lucked out for quite sometime now.

I think even the trailers to these alleged spoofs are incredibly painful, but my cousin eats them up and tries to repeat the routines to me endlessly.  I should mention that he is a little bit "slow", though, God bless him.

I think these movies are popular with people between the ages of 12 and 15. I myself, have no love for them. But I can watch them in the company of my kids, Because when they start cracking up laffing...that alone makes me laff too. So I can't say I hate them.

My wife rented it when it game out on video and I got stuck watching it with her. I already hated American Idol with a passion and this just made that hate grow ten thousand fold. Who told the contestants from American Idol they any talent let alone could act is beyond my realm of comprehension.

Well to be fair, the Wayans were not involved in the three grouped spoof movies. They made the original, chuckle-worthy Scary Movie (And it's admittedly disappointing sequel).

Here's the plot outline for Body Slam:
"M. Harry Smilac is a down-on-his-luck music manager who is having a hard time attracting talent and booking gigs for his band, Kicks (The most recent of the gigs is a Dairy Queen opening!!). When making arrangements for a campaign fund-raiser, he mistakes Rick Roberts, a professional wrestler, for a musician and hires him. At that moment he becomes a wrestling manager and starts to book matches for him and his teammate Tonga Tom. The team is a success, and Harry decides to take his wrestlers and his band on a "Rock n' Wrestling" tour. The tour is a success, and Harry feels what it is like to be a winner again."

Basically, Dirk Benedict (The A-Team), plays Smilac, loosely based on Vince McMahon.  Rick Roberts is played by Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Tonga Tom is one of the Samoans in the mid '80s WWF.  The film also features appearances by John Astin, Tanya Roberts, Kellie Martin, Billy Barty, Charles Nelson Reilly, as well as pro wrestlers Ric Flair, Captain Lou Albano and Bruno Sammartino.

I like Kelly Clarkson and all, but... lets not talk about that film.

Hmm, I just I'll drop another movie title out.  Does anyone actually like Hobgoblins or Hobgoblins 2 around here?  I haven't seen them yet, but I know and have heard how much these movies suck.

I look at comedy like a jeweler looks at a fine jewel, scrutinizing every detail; set up, segue's, delivery. People's taste in comedy is an amazingly revealing part of their personality. I absolutely love 'The Cable Guy'. It is gloriously dark and Carrey's character was hilariously menacing and manipulative.

On the other hand, I would love to take any DVD containing the loathesome name "Larry The Cable Guy" to the skeet range...

PULL....BAM!!!

Nice segue, eh!

Of the "Blue Collar Boys", Larry the Cable Guy is by far the most undeserving of any fame and or movie deal in the history of the business.  I'd rather watch Carrot Top than Larry the Cable Guy.  Put Pauly Shore in a movie with Carrot Top and I'm all for it.  In fact, they did do a movie together.  That's more hilarious than anything Larry's done.

Mo matter how bad a film may be, there's likely somebody out there somewhere who likes it. I have to admit to liking HIGHLANDER 2, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, and most all of the classic Baddies mentioned here. I even have some level of liking for BATMAN AND ROBIN even though it's very disappointing to me also.

A film I'd figure everybody would hate? Very hard to say...I will say I purchased a film called ENVY, a movie about a spray that can erase dog poo only where does the crap go?, starring Jack Black (who I do like in some things) and Ben Stiller (likewise) that to me was thoroughly disappointing in its level of not being the least bit funny. Comedy is hard to pull off successfully and no doubt comedy that feels much too forced is hard to pull off successfully.

I remember watching that a while back.  I thought, you know, it had Jack Black and it sounded like it was going be good, but it was just... boring.  It wasn't the least bit funny and for a comedy movie, that makes me upset.  So, since I don't like the film at all so you count me in as someone who hates the film.

Anyways, speaking of unfunny, anyone hate School for Scoundrels?  I'm still also curious if anyone hates Hobgoblins or Troll 2.

I love TROLL 2. I don't think it's a good movie, quite the opposite. But it is so very stupid in such interesting ways...

I'll second Cthulhu's mention of Slapstick (of Another Kind). Hands down the worst movie I've ever seen. If I ever meet somebody who professes to like that movie, I will punch them in the face.

BATMAN & ROBIN...  :bouncegiggle: man, that sux.  Despite the legendary and superb first 5 and last 3 minutes, the first serious screen treatment BATMAN (1989) is overlong and boring; too much of a good thing: JACK NICHOLSON as the Joker, but the followup BATMAN RETURNS had everything the first film had plus a lot more inertia (definitely a "superior sequel").  And I really liked BATMAN FOREVER despite its tummy roll and tumble into major camp.  BATMAN & ROBIN however...  :bluesad: Expensively produced and impressively cast, total annoying drivel I expect to be very fond of in 20 years or so.   :bouncegiggle:  :bluesad:

Here is my list.

Troll 2, It's bad, but I don't think I really liked it that much.  I might have enjoyed it more if I was super drunk.

Star Wars Episode 1 and 2.  I don't care for 1 that much, but I did enjoy it a bit, and 2 was actually not too shabby overall.

I do happen to like Highlander 2, but only the most recent cut which does away with the whole 500 years ago on another planet deal.

The other 2 big films I can think of are Rocky V and The Godfather Part III which I happen to like.  Rocky V has it's moments but I still think it was quite good.  The same can be said for the Godfather Part III.

I laughed a lot while watching it.
