This was played all the time when I was in sixth form. Which I dropped out of. I'm blame the song.

"Stairway to Heaven" was a staple of high school dances, but that had a lot to do with the fact that it is (a) a slow dance, meaning close physical contact, and (b) long.

That said, I really do love this song.

I burnt myself out on "Stairway to Heaven" when I was a young teenager.  Listened to it so many times that my love for it boomeranged and I grew to hate, hate, hate it.  After not hearing it for about 20 years, it came on one day when I was trapped in a barber chair and forced to listen to it.  I sort of liked it again; three different melodies, nice development for a rock song, great guitar solo by Page.  I could stand to hear it again in another 20 years. 

Well,we all love B-movies....so all of us here on this sight are pretty used to,and accept the fact,that different tastes are what makes us individuals. Most of the mainstream doesn't like what we like. Get alot of misfits of society together....and we're gonna not agree on everything. I think thats why everyone on this site gets along pretty well with each other. We all respect the individuality and opinion of others. We're not lemmings. WE ARE REBELS,MAN! I just recently found out that a good chunk of the songs I hate are all by the Steve Miller Band! I really didnt know that all those songs were by the same guy.  I've got to say he's got to be pretty talented to create such a wide range of suck that I couldnt even identify that it was all the same band.

I also really hate everything from REM and U2.  I'd rather puke out my intestines and swallow them again than listen to one of their songs.  I literally have to change the channel if one comes on.

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin I used to like, but they were overplayed and their songs NEVER END and i can't stand them now.

I also can't stand the damn Christmas Shoes song, but I dont know if anyone else really likes that. And the John Lennon Christmas song and every version of it.

I recall reading an interview with him where that a$$ claims to be an originator of punk music. Gimme a break. He represented to me all that punk was against. Meatloaf does NOT rock!

Meatloaf to me is broadway meets rock n roll.  Either way it equals "suck". 

Ok this next one I can't even stomach myself to find on youtube...Don't Worry Be Happy By Bobby McFerrin.  Then again, I'm somewhat convinced no one likes this song...not even Bobby himself.

"Who Wants to Live Forever" is the best Queen song.  It's a scientific fact.   (<--  said in best Homer Simpson voice.)

NO ONE thinks that the Achy Breaky song is good.  But I'm 100% with ya RC, I hate that song a lot.

I really, really hate Free Bird.  That flailing, endless, I'm-so-effed-up-that-I-can't-make-the-solo-stop solo... gaaah!  Gaaaah!  And I do think that some number of people do like the song (wrong as they may be, to do so).

"Dont' Wanna Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith.  That song is worthy of hate.

I could live a long time and not hear "Stairway" or "Love in an Elevator" again, and that'd be good, but that is not the same thing as hating the songs for what they are.

I'm going to agree with Paquita about the Steve Miller Band, but I'd single out "The Joker" in particular.

It's a song I instantly disliked the first time I heard it, and I've had to endure it time and again. The worst part is it is one of those songs that people put on when they decide they really want to "let their hair down and groove." They start singing along.

This is one of the reasons I do not spend a lot of time in bars.

There is also a crappy movie called The Pompatus of Love which was named after a phrase in this song. I don't recommend that either.

Im English and there's only about 2 David Bowie songs that dont annoy me in some way...overrated

Bowie's music I'm just "ok" with.  I like "Lets Dance" as a guilty pleasure.  His collaboration with Mick Jagger in "Dancing In The Streets" still disturbs me when I think of the video.

I agree with you on that sucker. The ultimate buzz killer. The song that ended the party, an led to the depression of the world. How on earth it's regarded as some masterpiece is beyond me. Yes, it was important for it's time, as tastes and trends were changing. But, dear me.....the lyrics are pathetic. It's just THAT damn riff.....

You're not alone.  Although it is catchy, everytime I hear Kurt slur "An albino... a mullato... a mosquito... my libido" I think, there were people in the 1990s who really believed that guy was a genius?

in kurt cobain's defence his lyrics are deliberately abstract and poetic, more stream-of-consciousness opposed to directly meaningful, but a lot of them do have meaning, or at least a subtext...personally I think his lyrics are original and, dare I say it, 'deep'. (also I think nirvana's tunes kick ass)... thats just my 2c

The sumb***h sounds like he's so stoned he can barely talk, and it goes on for freaking ever!  I don't even care much for the guitar solo.  I've heard twelve year olds dragging the pick across the strings and moving their fingers around on the fretboard pretty much at random sound as good as that supposedly awesome solo.

I hate this song. If it comes on the radio, I shut it off. If other people are present, they invariably protest this. Everybody seems to love this song about peace and love and sharing. As far as I can tell, Lennon thought if we all became a bunch of atheists and communists with no heritage, no authority and no ambition, the world would be a paradise. I don't think I imagined the same outcome he did.

I love the random appearance in the audience by Dick Van Patten.  And the backstory of the song.  Al calls up his friend Victoria Jackson (of Saturday Night Live) and tells her that he has a great idea for a Nirvana parody.  He then says that Kurt's on tour and he can't get a hold of him.  She says, "Well, they're on SNL this weekend."  He says, "Can I talk to Kurt?"  She gets Kurt to call Al.  Al says he'd like to do a parody.  Kurt says, "Sure no problem.  But, wait, it's not about food, is it?"  Al goes, "Oh, no, it's about how nobody understands a thing you're singing in your songs because you're unintelligible."  Kurt's like, "That's cool.  Can't wait to hear it."

He doesn't "slur".  He croaks... or is it a shriek?  I took the lyric as describing an awkward, smelly, childish, selfish sexual encounter, self conscious with late 20th century STDs, painfully revealing the narrator's own deep self loathing and contempt: he sees himself as some half-blood sickly white insignificant annoyance of an insect injector hungry for blood... "With the lights out its less dangerous... Here we are now... Entertain us... I feel stupid and contagious... Here we are now... Entertain us... A mulatto An albino A mosquito My libido..."
That record isn't just about lyrics but also it's great sound (ridiculing great records' lyrics is an old schtick of STEVE ALLEN's going back to him - quite amusingly - reciting with deadpan seriousness GENE VINCENT's "Be-Bop-A-Lula" on his first TV show).  The record's stirring 'cause it's great.

You're rightish... the song's really not so bad.  The entire song seems to me to express contempt for his own teenage/young adult audience, sort of a cruel joke at the expense of his fans (which is an attitude I find mildly offensive).  "Mulatto" & "albino" evoke images of social outcasts, as all teenagers imagine themselves to be.  And of course "libido" is the overriding concern of the young.  What makes the phrase hilariously bad to me is the "one of these things is not like the other" inclusion of "mosquito" which he seems to me to have thrown in because it's slightly exotic sounding and ends in "o."  Perhaps it's a clever parody of the sort of self-absorbed poetry he imagines his audience to write.  I still laugh at the idea that anyone would consider him a "genius," although that word is so often applied to anyone who's mildly competent at their craft that I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  :wink:   

I liked Nirvana quite a bit in the early 90s. They were a refreshing change of pace from all the death metal I was listening to at the time. They were just what I was looking for: pop melodies mixed with heaviness. You know what I hate? When eyeryone goes on about how Kurt was the spokesman for a generation. BULLf**kINGs**t. The majority of young people who championed Kurt as a spokesman were buying up MC Hammer and Color Me Badd before Nevermind came out. Most of these kids bought Nirvana because it was popular, just like Hammer and Vanilla Ice were popular a year or so before Nevermind came out. I liked Nirvana because they wrote good, simple, catchy songs and that's it. I despise the whole generation X concept and anyone who claimed to be a part of it was a f**king poser. At the time "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out, NIRVANA had relatively few fans.  I urge you to consider the artist was exposing himself; consider, for instance, he was a suicide. 

I suggest the poetic use of that word there is sadly appropriate, a mosquito: small, annoying, self absorbed, insignificant with penetration the primary conern... 
 
Y'know since killing himself, KURT COBAIN has taken a lot of hits, perhaps most famously by ANDY ROONEY on "60 Minutes" but he is not to blame for labels slapped on him like "spokesman" or "genius".  Not much of a NIRVANA fan myself, simply as a matter of course or taste, I will say I have not heard a record of their's that I didn't like and was not impressed by. 

This is a funny thread.  I agree with almost all of it so far.  I'd thought of starting one like this myself  -didn't realize it was already on here.  I almost didn't post on this one though because I couldn't think of any music that I actually think EVERYONE else likes.  I've gotta stop taking things so literally. :bouncegiggle:  So here's mine.

I know, Rev., I know. It's such a typical old fart thing to say, but it's true. I grew up in the 80s as well. When I was a kid back then, I was a die hard Iron Maiden freak and I pretty much hated anything that wasn't Iron Maiden. Even my parents, who grew up in the 60s, enjoyed a lot of 80s pop. Nowadays I'll listen to just about anything, but there's something special about a lot of 80s music. Yes, there was a lot of crap bands, but there was a lot of stuff that had a lot of honesty and heart. Sure, there's some nostalgia there, but I've been getting a big kick out of rediscovering bands I used to ignore back then (ie: Talk Talk, Images In Vouge, Killing Joke, etc). Most music these days is so plastic and manufactured that it's sick. It just goes to show you who popular music is geared towards: kids. I blame MTV and MuchMusic for this. They went from being about music to being about teenie shows and advertising. It makes me nostalgic for the Spice Girls for chrissake. It's a good thing there will always be an underground scene to explore....

I grew up listening to '60s and '70s music, listened to and bought a lot of '80s music back then, but not too much has risen to the surface since...  :wink:  I hardly despised the Pop then, but I can tell you it is "actually worse" now.  May I rephrase?  Actually worst.

Did I mention I hate "Yesterday" by THE BEATLES?  I don't need to be hyperbolic and describe self mutilation scenarios, when in fact it's just a song, like any song that anybody doesn't particularly care for, and I can certainly listen to the thing.  But in my experience, only BEATLES haters hate "Yesterday" and I love THE BEATLES.   Here is a really cool live early performance of "Yesterday" where GEORGE the smart ass, introduces PAUL (love GEORGE intro, still hate it):

Did I mention I love PAUL... ?  I bought all his great, good, crappy and corny records back all thru the '70s, and of course always loved all of  THE BEATLES, but individually, PAUL's Pop Rock was most appealing to me... Still like this song, like I do all of PAUL's hits...  :lookingup: I will say that this video helps my case not one bit, it's dreadful, but so much fun for old WINGS fans, like me (I never denied loving Pop first) and they all three PAUL, LINDA and DENNY LAINE look young and well.

All music today is bad. Everything from the 50's through to the 80's had real heart and there was always some new kind of sound within each genre being explored. Now everything is either painfully dull and bland, yet considered artsy OR is terribly overproduced, souless trash that makes a nice wedge for the suits and gives some airhead their 15mins in the limelight.
