Title: REALLY Obscure Killer Creature Movies
Post by: frodo on February 10, 2009, 04:57:36 PM
Some of my favorites so far are ...

Killer Klowns from Outer Space
The Uninvited
Strays!
Troll
Razorback

Killer clowns, killer cats, killer trolls, and killer razorback hogs are a far cry from the usual Child's Play or Jaws. I'm looking for more obscure killer creature movies. They're usually better when they're from the 80's.

What other killer creature movies are there? Any about killer gerbils or hamsters or any other animal??? I've seen the usual lists on Google for killer animal movies.

Arachnid - killer giant spiders chase people around an island.  Well done B movie.
Snowbeast - great made-for-TV bigfoot movie from the '70s,
Bone Snatcher - mysterious creature stalks some people out in the desert.
Creature (1985) - nasty critter stalks some people on one of the moons of Jupiter or someplace.
Flesh Eaters (B&W) - Cool movie about some people on an island.
Insecticidal - total cheese about hot babes chased around their sorority house by silly CGI bugs.
Lethal Target - Hot babe on a spaceship vs. footage of a monster taken from one of the Xtro movies.
Spiders - Giant spider is eating people!
Starship Troopers 2 - I love this movie.  I may be the only one.
Venom - very good low budget movie about a zombified guy chasing some teens around.

THE CAR (1977) - A killer . . . you guessed it. Like RC once pointed the thing likes to kill hippy french horn players.

KILLDOZER (1974) - A piece of demon-possessed construction equipment (guess what!) on the rampage on a tiny island.

BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL (1984) - Again, the title pretty much gives it away.
I've been told by folks much wiser than myself that under no circumstances do I want to see this - so its tops on my 'To See' list.

And, sadly, you can't download that one from that cultrarare site. You have to watch it on the site.

The Killer Shrews - Features killer, um, dogs, um, wearing, you know, um, shrew suits.

The Godmonster of Indian Flats - Features a killer mutant sheep (it doesn't actually do any harm other than scaring some kids at a birthday party and eating their hot dogs, then dancing with a hippie chick).

The Beast of Yucca Flats - Features a killer scientist/wrestler guy. Not exactly a creature, but can we really count Tor Johnson as fully human?

Shadowzone - Features a killer thingy from another dimension.

Attack of the Giant Leeches - Features leeches in tennis shoes.

The Giant Gila Monster - Features a regular-sized gila monster on a Lionel train set.

The Lift - Features a killer elevator. "Take the Stairs! Take the Stairs! For God's Sake, Take the Stairs!"

Obscure killer creature movies?  Alright, I know a couple of those.

Orca http://www.badmovies.org/movies/orca/ (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/orca/)

Octopus http://www.badmovies.org/movies/octopus/ (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/octopus/)

Pigs http://www.badmovies.org/movies/pigs/ (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/pigs/)

Please Don't Eat My Mother (Same thing applies for Little Shop of Horrors) http://www.badmovies.org/movies/pleasemother/ (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/pleasemother/)

The Stuff (It's more of a killer desert, but its still obscure) http://www.badmovies.org/movies/thestuff/ (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/thestuff/)

It Happened At Lakewood Manor (Ants are a bit popular, but this movie is pretty obscure) http://informationgeekreviews.blogspot.com/2009/02/personal-review-ants-also-known-as-it.html (http://informationgeekreviews.blogspot.com/2009/02/personal-review-ants-also-known-as-it.html)

Everyone's favorite favorite FROGS (1972) features killer cute lil' lizards and turtles and other creepy crawlies. The frogs don't technically kill anybody, but they do give Ray Milland a heart attack and destroy his birthday cake.

GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER has Hedorah, who is made of yeechy polluted gunk and busted baby dolls. He likes to suck on smokestacks and melt Japanese hippies.

WILLARD and BEN both feature killer rats, not to mention THE RATS ARE COMING! THE WEREWOLVES ARE HERE!.

BRIDES OF BLOOD has a cameo by a radioactive mutant butterfly, and THE REVENGE OF DR. X features a giant venus flytrap monster that eats Japanese hunchbacks and puppies.

IN THE SHADOW OF KILLIMANJARO has a troop of killer baboons and LINK has an old orangutan (dressed up to look like chimp) who plots to off Terrence Stamp and lusts over Elisabeth Sue.

King Cobra AKA Jaws of Satan - Druids in Alabama have to stop Satan in the form of a giant cobra. Also the first film that Cristina Applegate appeared in.

Ssssssssssss! - Mad scientist turns his lab assistant into cobra using some sort of strange formula because the assistant starts hitting on his daughter.

Alligator - Remember those stories about alligators sewers, well this is a film about it. Apparently Chicago is a prime breeding ground for this sort of thing.

Two animal attack films to add:

Deadly Eyes (a remake of "The Killer Shrews" with dachshunds wearing rat costumes)
The Wild Beasts Will Get You (chemicals in the water supply make animals go crazy - see a flamethrower used on real rats.

Asia can put out some pretty sick films. Not really a creature film, but a horror nonetheless.
Check out Tetsuo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096251/) (1989) Japan

I just watched NIGHTWING on Fearnet the other night. A very under rated Vampire bat attack film from the 70's!
I would like to add...
.The RAT'S ARE COMING! THE WEREWOLFS ARE HERE!-ask Raffine-Andy Milligan(gasp) !
.Killer bears! In PROPHECY and NIGHT of the GRIZZALY!
.So many Killer Bee movies....the KILLER BEES,SWARM for example...
.the NAKED JUNGLE-Charleton Heston vs. army ants! CLASSIC!!!!
.SQUIRM!!!!-Worms! Sand worms!!! YOWIE!!!!
.the DEADLY MANTIS-a gigantic killer mantis,of course!
.IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA-Harryhausen ! Not quite an octopus...not enuff limbs...so whut! CLASSIC!
.the MONSTER that CHALLENGED the WORLD-Killer snail? You bet!!!!
.The MYSTERIOUS ISLAND has giant bees and snails and lotsa critters!
.Bert I Gordon's FOOD of the GODS has a killer chicken!!!! And Giant rats! And maggots! And Ida Lupino!
....I could go on forever! But my exclamation point key would get worn to the nub if I do! This thrread is too much fun!!!!

Trailer for FOOD of the GODS! (and it's got Marjoe Gortner as the hero! Too great. I LOVE this movie.)

We forgot about Ben. Where else do you get a creature film that has a young pre-creepy child molesting Michael Jackson singing the title song like it's a love song. And lets not forgets the hordes of rats that the super-rat Ben leads in attack.

Come to think of it, maybe the fact Michael Jackson sang the title song to this film the way he did should of been taken as warning sign for the future.

Empire of the Ants is an obscure creature flick, though not too obscure...

Dance of the Dwarfs is a film I think I am one of the few Americans to know about, though the creatures disappointingly only show up in full-body glory a few minutes till the end.

She Creature - quite a good movie about a killer mermaid.
Breeders (1998) - space creature loose in an all girls college
Cemetery Gates - mutated Tasmanian Devil goes on an over the top gore fest
Curse of the Komodo - Giant Komodo dragons chase after some hot babes
Dragon Storm - Dragons vs. villagers - surprisingly good special effects.
Horror Express - Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee vs. ancient bigfoot creature.
Hybrid - nasty critter eats people in a post apocalyptic future.
Inseminoid - space monster threatens people on a distant moon.  Good early '80s atmospheric film.
It Waits - Cerina Vincent looks all hot and sexy while a creature chases her around the woods.  Unfortunately wanted to be a Lifetime movie of the week pretty badly.
Jigsaw - a mannequin kills college kids
Killer Rats - that's right - killer rats - in a psychiatric hospital
King of the Lost World - sexy babes, King Kong gets nuked, Bruce Boxleitner - this movie's got it all!
Moontrap - alien robots chase Bruce Campbell and Chekov from Star Trek around the moon.
Within the Rock - Alien rock monster after some people on an asteroid.

No, a friend of mine had a very poor VHS bootleg he picked up in China I saw a few years ago ... it's been on my find a better copy list ever since. He now doesn't know what he did with the tape, no knowing it's rarity.

The only known print is housed at the Korean Film Archive.   It was never released legitimately as far as anyone knows, but if there was vhs bootlegs then there must have been a Chinese/Japanese/Korean release at some point decades ago.  Now I have something else to try to track down that will probably be impossible to find!

From what I know it's occasionally shown at Asian film festivals, the copy he had was clearly a camcorder bootleg copy. Not square and shaky, I know he got it in mainland China or Honk Kong I saw it about 2 or 3 years ago and asked him for it a while back to make a DVD copy of it, but yesterday I ask du-mass and he thought that he gave it to Goodwill when he cleared out a bunch of his old VHS tapes last fall. I shall smack him when I see him.

EDIT clarity

As long as we are mentioning Frogs, most of the deaths in the movie are not caused by frogs, but my most other animals in the area.  We see large lizards, spiders, snakes, and possibly even birds killing people.  But if we want to most obscure killer creature, the snapping turtle that kills that lady in the film would for sure count as obscure.  It still ticks me even now, after all the weeks I had to recover for it.

I don't know, she was pretty stuck in that mud, and it was a really big turtle...

...the snapping turtle attack was probably my second favorite scene in the whole movie.  Ray Milland being menaced by the horde of slowly advancing frogs was my favorite.

I never really thought of Killer Klowns as "obscure."  Obscure would be...

Blue Monkey- Giant bug in a hospital
Cellar Dweller- Cartoonist fights off demon
Reptilicus- Euro-zilla, with worse SFX
Dogora- Jellyfish from space terrorizes Japan
Hiruko the Goblin- Goblins escape from Hell and begin stealing people's heads

Not so obscure, but not so well known...

The Giant Behemoth (aka Behemoth the Sea Monster)- Godzilla knock off
Unearthed- Feast sans humor
Prophecy- Giant mutant bear pwns everything and everyone

One of William Castle's last films...(mebbe it was, either this one or SHANKS) was BUG (1975)...which was about firey oversized cockroaches.
Not so obscure with us B movie fans is The DEVIL BAT(1943) with Bela Lugosi.
...which was kinda redone with George Zucco in the Bela role and the FLYING SERPENT(1946) in the Devil Bat role!
Akim Tamiroff is a vulture-man in the VULTURE (1967).
A kin of the Flying Serpent and the Giant Claw is Larry Cohen's Q-the WINGED SERPENT (1982).

I know the volume is'nt very loud...but this rare trailer for The FLYING SERPENT is worth posting! The crappy monster looks kinda like a mini Giant Claw!

I just saw a film on Cinamax that would fit well on this list, Black Sheep (2007). This is not the Chris Farley film of the same name, it's about a mutant sheep that bites people turning them into killer sheep that eat people in New Zealand.
