Title: Godfrey Ho "cut and paste" ninja movies
Post by: heidavey on February 13, 2009, 05:15:22 AM
...are these worth watching?

I saw "The Ultimate Ninja" (1986) and it had two disparate storylines which never interacted. It was pretty terrible. Admittedly, by all accounts, this seems to be one of the worst he has made. So are the others worth watching? Recommendations?

OH MY GOD! I've never seen Ninja Terminator!!!! I've seen Ninja Hunt, Bruce Lee's Ways of Kung Fu, and a few other I've cared to forget about, but Ninja Terminator tops them all. Godfrey Ho's piecemeal films are kind of interesting, usually in the ridiculous production value (usually found to be most ridiculous during fight scenes), and completely nonsensical storylines usually involving an American half and a Phillipino half. I read somewhere that Godfrey would buy up unreleased foreign films (usually Taiwanese or Phillipino) and recut them to new footage of American actors involving some stupid plot with ninjas. Oh the travesty of it all. If you've only seen one of his films then consider seeing more to see how far low he sinks. Also watch out for the works of frequent collaborator Joseph Lai and actor Richard Harrison. This is a super cheesy, terribly fun subgenre of martial arts films that deserves its own place in cinema history. Enjoy! And thanks for the link, RC.

Never seen any Godfrey Ho Ninja films. I love a bad movie, but are they watchable bad movies or are they just bad?

Thanks, I've heard of these Godfrey Ho movies but I've never seen them. I guess I've got a few more for the Netflix queue.

I haven't seen that many, but some are quite watchable and others are pretty dull.  Worst one I can remember is Ninja Empire, as a ton of the movie is people walking around and talking on the phone.

Basically, it depends on how good the movies he bought the rights are too, and there's a big divergence in quality.

The only one I've seen is NINJA CHAMPION and I thought it was a great bad movie.

Sample dialogue:

“OK, you can help me kill them if you like, but I’m still going to kill you!  It’s over, George!”

“We ninjas are getting bored.  Can we start now?”

And of course, this immortal exchange:

“The wine, there must have been something in it!  Oh God!”

“Not the wine, my nipples, you jerk!”

I have a DVD collection called NINJA Collection or something like that where they have a bunch of the cut and paste movies. I was trying to figure out how the plots are integrated and then these stupid looking ninjas kept showing up.

Especially how their headbands have NINJA! on them in case you needed clarification.
