Title: Worst Movie You Paid to See?
Post by: hotspur on February 16, 2009, 12:40:54 PM
What is the worst movie you paid to see in a theater?

Now, some might think that The Quick and the Dead is unbeatable int he catagory worst movie and I did pay to see that one hungover afternoon, but actually the worst movie I have ever paid to see was Highlander II which was truly abyssmal.  It was amazingly bad, so bad I couldn't believe it had been made and that the actors were willing to go through with it.

The worst film I ever paid to see was Hard Rock Zombies. I went to see it when I was about 15 in theaters. Only film that came close to topping it had to be Jurassic Park : The Lost World. I remember reading the book and when I saw the film, the second half resembled more like Carnasaur than the novel. I actually got up and walked out of the theater and got a refund.

Probably "Lost In Space" back in 1998. Very bland indeed.

These are all movies that my wife and I didn't plan on seeing, we were just out looking for something to do and that was what was available:

Oliver's Story (very bad sequel to Love Story)
Dumb and Dumber (Do I hate every Jim Carrey thing I've ever seen? Hmm... yes, yes I do)
The Mask (See above)
Must Like Dogs
The Class (Entre les Murs) (Just saw this one on V day. Prompted my comment in the "Random Thoughts" thread about how French cinema is getting weird).
Clue

However, Clue has kind of grown on me after that first watching and I've enjoyed rewatching it several times. Probably the shooting of the singing telegraph girl and the "flames... forehead..." speech of Madeline Kahn are my favorite moments.

Oh, and one I saw by myself that I regretted paying money for: The Rock

Funny thing is I've never been so disgusted that I walk out of a movie. I guess it's like that old joke: "The food in this restaurant is terrible, just terrible." "Yes, and the portions are too small."

Oh... this is a hard choice... most movies I see are winners, but the worst had to be The Hulk.  I didn't like it at all.  Now, regarding what was my worst movie I bought that was on DVD or VHS... would you settle for a Top 10 List?  Just kidding...

Jurassic Park.  Hated it. I was oddly fine with it for the first hour, but the last half sent me into a tailspin of rage that was so great that I refused to leave simply because they weren't gonna get ANY of my admission fee for free.

Other than that, Godzilla 1985. I actually walked out of that one after my friend/date slept through most of it. She woke up and mumbled, "Is this damned thing still going?" Godzilla was attacking the city and the heroes were watching from the 30th floor of some building. Godzilla wiped out most of the building before they decided it might be a good idea to leave. I said out loud, "If these idiots try to use the elevator, I've had it!" They ran straight for the elevator. I walked out and my friend/date shouted, "Yippee!  Bye, stupid movie!"

#1...and I doubt anything will ever take it's place...

The worst part about it...I was NOT on a date...I wasn't with anyone...I saw this on my own free will without a promise of easy action with an emotional chick.  I completely ignored all other films playing that day so I could see this film.  There was no value to five dollars that day.

Honorable mentions;
Sweet Home Alabama (I was on a date this time)
American Pie 2 (ditto)
Star Wars Prequels (but looking back it was probably unavoidable)
Dantes Peak (but it was worth it, my friend and I made fun of the whole thing)

Probably "Neighbors" with John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd. Every joke in the movie had been given away in the ads for it, therefore nothing had the element of surprise that the gags needed to work.
Dishonorable mention: Legend of the Lone Ranger. The only thing I can remember is Christopher Lloyd standing on a rock at some point. The rest of the film I've completely forgotten, a rarity for me.

I loved Sweeney Todd, but I'm a musical theater geek.

The worst movie I paid to see was The Mask.  I walked out 40 minutes in and demanded my money back.

I was supposed to see Bringing Out the Dead with a friend but we got to the theater about 20 minutes too late for some reason. So instead we saw Nurse Betty for some reason... what the f*ck... As for worst movie I intended to see and actually saw? Godzilla 2000, hands down. I FELL ASLEEP DURING A GODZILLA MOVIE! Seriously, what the f*ck...

Super Mario Bros. (I was a stupid naive kid then, what do you expect?)

Batman and Robin (Same as above)

Jason X (I now follow the rule of if they put the killer in space for a sequel, avoid at ALL COSTS)

The Fog remake (God, this is why I hate remakes)

Dumb and Dumber (Do I hate every Jim Carrey thing I've ever seen? Hmm... yes, yes I do)

Dumb and Dumber is the best Farrelly brothers movie, by far.  Is that saying much? No.  But Dumb and Dumber always makes me laugh.  Thing is, Jeff Daniels was really funny, and he's a not a guy you think of when you think of 'funny actors'.  I dunno.  To each their own.  I think the movie had it's moments.

Lloyd: "What's the Soup Du Jour?"
Waitress: "It's the soup of the day."
Lloyd: "Sounds good.  I think I'll have that."

The Mask (See above)
My father and I went to go see this in a packed theater.  After the movie people applauded and I was shocked.  Every single "highlight" moment in the movie was covered in the previews.  That means two minutes of "highlights" in an hour and a half plus adventure.

Wow -- quite a few to choose from, really --

Howard the Duck -- walked out.
The Valachi Papers -- with Charles Bronson.  Endless pointless bloodletting & no plot.  Walked out.
Panic in the Year 3000 -- with Olivia Hussey.  Blitheringly incoherent patchise based on "The Most Dangerous Game".  Sat through to bitter end to see if it would improve.  It didn't.
The Phantom of The Opera -- with Robert Englund.  When I saw it in the theatre, people began screaming savagely at the screen about how badly it sucked.  I eventually left in a hurry for fear of being swept up in an orgy of hatred.
A Christmas Tale -- with Catherine Denuve.  The ads made it look like something quirky & independent with a wry sense of humor.  Boy, were we misled!  3 hours of French angst & incoherence.  Absolutely no likeable characters.  I was sad that they all didn't die horribly by the film's end.

That's really the top ones I can think of that I actually spent time to seek out at a theatre & pay full price for.

Austin Powers, Goldmember - Some people think this is the best one...I guess they didn't see the first two.  They'd realize all three did was rehash the same old sh*t in part 3.

DUNE

I know this movie is terribly overwrought, has 3rd rate special effects, Kyle MacClachlan at times seesm like he has taking the William Shatner course in acting  and the rest of the cast's dialogue is so campy it borders on what one sees in pornos (or so I'm told), but I still can't help but watch this when I see it on.  It has some sort of weird hold on me.  I might need an intervention, but there it is.

Oh and the woman who plays Paul's mother is very beautiful btw.

Watch this movie in the context of it being the 80s and of it being Lynch's first (and last?) taste of a budget that was not only big, but huge.

I understand people not liking Dune, but if you can't appreciate the effort that went into it then I can't believe you even bother watching movies at all.

Oh, and btw, if I ever see gluecuss, I am going to insist he admit that Revenge of the Sith was INTENTIONALLY bad. I've never really and trully wanted my money back at any other time.

I think Myers is funny, don't get me wrong.  But they could've done without part 3.  And does he really have to play like, 15 different characters?

On the whole, if they had to have done a part 3, it should've just focused on Dr. Evil, Scott and Mini Me.  Myers is hilarious as Dr. Evil.  And oddly enough, Jim Carrey was supposed to play it, but ended up doing The Grinch.

The movie wouldn't have sucked so bad if they had put Elizabeth Hurley in as Ms. Peel, and hadn't made the film about something to take over the world. Maybe just something sinister to threaten Liverpool.

I lived at the movies when I was a kid. I was 14 and the owners used to let me into R rated pictures because  they all knew me by name.

I never walked out on anything. But, I went to see Nashville and I literally sat there and started to cry, I wanted it to be over. I think this was nominated for Best Picture, but I haven't seen it since. Rocky was another piece of crap I couldn't stand. To me, it was just one long Stallone monologue.

I haven't paid to see crap. I typically only pay to see movies I'm fairly sure will be good. With that said the worst I've paid for was the third Matrix movie.
