Title: Musicians Trying Something New Post by: Mr. DS on February 16, 2009, 06:43:44 PM I've mentioned in many threads how I like some singer solo compared to when they're with another band. Sometimes I like a band more with a different lead singer. For example,

Matter of fact she looked a helluva lot better to me after she went solo. He was a hundred times better in White Zombie. (http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee64/jram03/audioslave.jpg) I really couldn't stand Rage Against The Machine and when I heard they were hooking up with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden I had doubts. However, I have to say I really enjoy Audioslave and the band really adjusted to fit his style. Sometimes I can appreciate a musician trying something new, and sometimes, not so much. I actually liked Mick Jagger as a solo act more than with the Stones, but then, I don't really care for the Stones. I like Garth Brooks singing country, but his foray into rock just didn't work, even though it really wasn't that bad in and of itself (he basically should never have invented a persona). I love Bing Crosby, and I love the Andrews Sisters. Put 'em together, though, and absolute magic happens. It's not Beethoven, but a few of the pieces are very enjoyable.
I gotta tell you, if you ever took piano lessons, you know the look of those Schirmer edition covers. They bring back memories. It's so weird seeing a Schirmer cover with Billy Joel's name on it. And I like what Randy Bachman did with BTO. But it's also good that The Guess Who have been able to reform and tour a few times over the years.
That's what I really like - bands that succeed together and individually. That's a sign of real talent. No dead weight. It's especially great when they can get back together and pool this enormous combined body of work in concert. Saw The Eagles in Toronto in 2005, and it was like four concerts in one. You got the best of The Eagles, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey in a single show. Just incredible. The Joe Walsh talkbox solo in Rocky Mountain Way was worth the whole trip. Same with Styx, I can't stand Styx, but I love Tommy Shaw and James Youngs solo stuff.
When it comes to trying different stuff, I'm pretty open as long as it's not too much of a leap from any group's original style. I'll admit my favourite albums by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are their '86 efforts, which utilized synth guitars. Alot of fans hate those albums and they weren't that well recieved at the time from what I have read. When it comes to changing lead singers, I prefer quite a few that took over from previous "classic lineup" members. Perfect example is Ronnie Dio with Sabbath. I like the way Sabbath sound much more, a bit meatier and powerful. On the other end of the spectrum, it was a shame that the likes of Riot, MSG and Yngwie Malmsteen changed frontmen all the time. Those groups still produced great albums, but some amazing stuff could've been done with a bit more stability. |
