Title: The "bring back" thread...
Post by: Doggett on February 18, 2009, 03:04:39 PM
What stuff do you want to come back!!!

I want The Avengers to come back! The proper British ones, not the American comic characters.
I want decent children's TV presenters to come back. Presenters that are actually older than their audience would be nice.!!

Television before Reality TV shows existed and the FCC was slamming everyone with their fine stick.
Damn you MTV and Janet Jackson, damn you all to hell!!!!
Television networks that show what they claim to show like SciFi only showing SciFi programming, AMC on showing classic movies, and MTV only showing music videos.
70's style porn but with modern looking actresses. The 70's porn had a plots to it, not much granted but they had plots. Just keep all the hair.
Deadly disease free sex. Use to be all you had to worry about after a one night of unprotected sex was if you were going to have a kid and the worst you might of got is a case of the clap. Now you hope that a kid or the clap is the only thing you might of got from a unprotected roll in the hay.
Looney Toons Cartoons that aren't butchered on TV. Now they are all cut up cause of political correctness.

The Drive-In. And the movies it produced.
Horror Hosted Late Night Programming instead of infomercials.
Black and White TV shows and movies actually getting air time on TV.
Music Videos aside from hip-hop and rap ones.
Fun and imagination in entertainment.

They tried, in 1991. It wasn't funny. Which was really strange considering how Carol Burnett has been funny in practically everything she's ever done.

I think I watched 2 episodes.

anyone with half a brain wouldn't want to be a celebrity.  You get money, but you loose your freedom, dignity, privacy...I would never be happy.  Any mistake you make instantly becomes national news.

Pinball.

Affordable cigarettes.

Mass distrubution of horror film mags and comics-Once Upon a Time I could go to the newstand and find FAMOUS MONSTERS,Marvel's Monsters of the Movies, the Monster Times,Castle of Frankenstien,Movie Monsters,Creepy,Eerie,Vampirella,Conan the Barbarian,Dracula Lives,Tales of the Zombie,Witches Tales,Psycho,Captain America,Sgt.Fury,Two Gun Kid,Devil Dinosauer, the Spirit,MAD,Mr. Machine,Where Monsters Dwell,Sgt.Rock...all side by side selling at affordable prices a kid could buy with his fruit-picking or paper route money. Now it's hard to find any mags outside of comic book or specialty shops...miles away and out of reach for a small town kid on his bike. A shame. I learned to be a voracious reader from comics and fun monster mags. No wonder so many kids are near illiterate.

Hell yeah, Tesco have Chocolate and Strawberry ones made by Kelloggs. I obviously have to order mine online now with the rest of my shopping, on a count of being a nutjob.

Strawberry are my faves, but the price of 'em has jumped from £1.29 to £2.89.  :hatred:

Legos without all the fancy crap.

Erector sets that are not molded plastic, but rather generic steel parts.

BB guns that are priced reasonably AND are reasonably accurate.

Oldschool Station Wagons. I'll take an oldschool full-sized station wagon over a truck, SUV, minivan, or a crossover any day. I think this is one of the reasons Detroit is doing so poorly: They've taken them out of the market to try and get people to buy bigger, more expensive rides. The only wagons you see are the small ones aimed at people that don't have or aren't willing to spend $35,000 on a truck. The old Malibu Classic wagon could tow almost two tons, survive a hellatious
crash, and they didn't flip or roll like trucks often do. They seated more people than most trucks more comfortably, and you could fit quite a bit in them, and it wasn't out in the rain, and did (and would) get better mileage than a truck.

SST toy cars, those cars you put the zip thing in and pull it out real fast to get the wheels spinning. They even had them in versions that the wheels and fenders, hood, etc came off when they crashed.

Pennyracers. .. 'nuff said

Sitcoms that actually take place in a variety of situations, as opposed to several interchangeable shows about a group of quirky people going about their business.

TV shows with self-contained episodes that can be watched in any order. I love a good story arc as much as the next person, but I also like shows I can casually watch, that still make sense if I miss an episode. Maybe the story arcs keep people watching, but they also keep people away. There are very few new shows that excite me right away. It might take awhile for word to get back to me that I might actually like something. By the time I found out Lost was a good show, near the end of the first season, it was too late. I had to watch the first season on DVD while the second season was airing, then watch the second season on DVD, then finally start watching the third season as it aired. Smallville was around for five years before I took an interest in it. And I've decided I just don't have time to catch up on the new Battlestar Galactica, having only watched the pilot. The only good thing is that when I'm looking for something new to watch, I can see whole seasons at my leisure, rather than a week at a time. Watching new episodes of Lost was an adjustment, I can tell you.

Nowadays, I won't even check out a new show, because I've decided I can only follow a handful without it becoming more of a burden than a pleasure. A new show comes along with a story arc, I'm not fitting it in. Bring back shows with stand-alone episodes.

Station wagons seem to be making a comeback. Not the enormous Malibu Classic-style ones, necessarily, and they aren't calling them station wagons, but I've noticed several new models coming out. The Subaru Forrester is, and has always been, a station wagon, even if they insist on calling it an SUV. I've seen others as well, though no model names are coming immediately to mind.

I totally agree on the erector sets. And somewhere, I think I still have several SST cars, including the demolition derby models. Cool stuff.

Bring back good, goofball, offbeat shows like Gilligan's Island, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Square Pegs, etc. -- shows that celebrate weirdness. Not that I watch TV anymore, anyway, but I miss good stuff like this.

That is so sweet, Trevor. I know we both lost our fathers about the same time, but I don't know whether I'd like to see mine again before he died. I remember him as such a strong and vibrant man, then when I got to see him just before he died, here was a man who had to be helped into bed, who had to be helped into the bathroom, who had to use a walker to walk, and then just before he died, even a walker wasn't enough. He had to be physically helped whether he had to go. No, I like to think I remember him as the strong and vibrant man he was, before he got sick.

Cable News Networks that actually report the news without all these political slants. Currently you got FOX News with their lips pressed to the Republican Party's butt, you got MSNBC with their lips pressed to the Democratic Party's butt, and CNN which depends on who reporting as to which butt they kiss. Or there is CNN Headline News which has idiots like Nancy Grace bellowing and moaning about how she is so outraged about crap that most stop carring about after a few days. Why must true fair and balanced journalism be sacrificed for entertainment. When I want news, i want facts not opinions on how this group is right and that group is wrong.

The Vinnie Vincent Invasion.

Naw, Vinnie can remain in mediocre obscurity.

Bring back Marx playsets, Gi Joe's that aren't politically correct; As a matter of fact, bring back toys with small pointy parts that can choke you or put out an eye and clear out the pool Darwin style.

Bring back Baja shirts and puka shells, and Vans that don't just fit a narrow, petite mans foot and get at least a few holes in the side before they fall apart.

While we're at it, bring back Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, and Robert Mitchum; Stars that actually lived the life!

Bring back drive in theaters.  There are still a couple of them around, but I really wish there were more, so that more people can be exposed to them.  I saw Jurassic Park 3 and Cats & Dogs that way (The movies were average, but the experience of seeing them that way was great and enjoyable).

Yeah, and while they're at it, bring back disgusting low-budget exploitation movies specifically aimed to play at the bottom of a double or triple bill at a drive-in.

My parents always drove away or made me close my eyes and go to sleep when the disgusting low-budget exploitation second feature came on.  That's why I want them to bring them back!
