Title: What else do you do?
Post by: The Burgomaster on February 25, 2009, 01:54:04 PM
Okay, if you are a contributor to this website, Il know you spend lots of time watching movies that most people would throw in the garbage.  But what else do you do (other than work or school) that takes up a lot of your time.

Currently, I spend a lot of time with:

* Magic - About a year and a half ago, I started building a collection of magic tricks, books, and DVDs.  I have everything from die boxes to change boxes to color-changing knives to color-changing cards to linking rings to cups and balls to magic coins and poker chips . . . what I don't have is a shapely 25 year old blonde assistant.  I performed at my company's holiday party back in December . . . and I didn't screw up a single trick.

* Board games - I'm not talking about the stuff you buy at Toys R Us like SORRY and MONOPOLY . . . I'm talking about the kinds of games that you need to buy in specialty/hobby stores or online.  Everything from medieval games like WARRIOR KNIGHTS and DOMAINE to world conquest games like DUST and WAR ON TERROR to abstract strategy games like DVONN and TAYU to resource management games like AGRICOLA to sword-and-sorcery games like RUNEBOUND and TOMB to supernatural games like THE ARKHAM HORROR.  This is my newest obsession . . . just got into it around the beginning of December.

* Fantasy and sim sports games - I play CDM fantasy baseball and football online.  I also play baseball, hockey, basketball, and football sims online (the website is What if Sports).  These games use players from essentially every year in sports history . . . you build teams and the computer develops a full-season schedule pitting your team against other teams.  The program uses player stats and ratings to determine game outcomes.  Nothing like building a baseball team that has Babe Ruth in the outfield, George Brett at third base, and Sandy Koufax on the mound.

How about you?

I play a lot of golf in the summer.  Hopefully in about 5 weeks or so we'll be out on the course again.  Been playing about 15 years probably, I guess I'm okay at it.  Handicap is 10, so on a par 72 course I shoot about 82 on average.  Best round is two under par for 9 holes.  Shot one under last year.  Got a hole in one once, on a little executive course, but that's good enough for me.

I lift weights too, though I think I was overdoing it and now I've got a sore left shoulder.  I'm taking a week off.

Read: Mysteries & sci-fi mostly, occasionally horror. Mysteries I alternate between new stuff and old pulp stuff. I never get tired of Raymond Chandler & Dashiell Hammett, and by my bedside is an absolutely fantastic 1000-page collection of pulp stories from the 20s to 40s. Besides that I occasionally find an interesting non-fiction book.

Music: I play classical piano.

Language study: I can survive in several languages, meaning I can order food in restaurants, read a train schedule, ask directions and do other rudimentary transactions. But I'm not fluent in anything but English. I keep trying though. Currently taking some Spanish classes and may shortly change gears to practice the Italian as I may be going to Italy this summer.

Bike/walk: Not as much as I'd like, but sometimes I'll force myself to leave the car behind and do errands the old fashioned way. One time my wife had our only car (at the time) out of town and I bought and brought home the entire Thanksgiving meal on the bicycle. The clerks at the grocery store got a lot of entertainment watching me load it up.

I'm currently enrolled in the 100 Greatest Books club from Easton Press.  They send me one hardcover, leather-bound, gold-leaf book per month (but I don't read them that fast).  So far, I've read HUCKLEBERRY FINN, ROMEO AND JULIET, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, MOBY DICK, and THE TIME MACHINE.  Currently, I'm around 400 pages into THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (a fantastic novel).  I have about 5 others at home that I received but haven't read yet.

As for pulp fiction, I have every Doc Savage paperback (including the "fake" ones that were written many years after the originals).  And every Avenger paperback except one (including the "fake" ones).  Great stuff to read on a plane because most of them are only about 110 to 150 pages and you can often finish an entire book (maybe more than one) before you reach your destination.

Sooooooo many hobbies. Besides movies, I use my computer alot, I do some modding for the game Unreal Tournament 2004. Here's where they can be found if anyone is interested. (http://www.craptasticvoyage.com/modules.php?name=News&new_topic=7) (http://(http://www.craptasticvoyage.com/modules.php?name=News&new_topic=7)). They run the gamut from simple little coding mods to entire vehicles that I made the actual 3D model, texture, sound effects, visual effects and all kinds of other stuff.

In the summer I have a Quad I ride quite a bit, and I have a big bad snowmobile I seem to spend more time working on than riding in the winter.

We also have some RC trucks and buggies. Most are nitro powered, but I have a 1/8 scale buggy I recently converted from nitro to a brushless electric setup. Seems super fast, but it's hard to tell with snow and ice being everywhere.

I used to read quite a bit, but not any more. Reading is great, but rarely gives me much of a sense of accomplishment.

Trying to buy all of Carl Hiaasen's books

I lived in south Florida - specifically Homestead, Key Largo, and Key West - for a number of years.

I can tell you this: Hiaasen doesn't write fiction, he writes true-life adventures.

His books remind me why I loved living down there, and why I couldn't wait to get the heck outta there!

Okay, okay.

When I'm not watching movies, I collect ALOT of 80's cd's and vinyl. I like to get hammered come each weekend (on Jim Beam and an 8-pk of Millers) and cook myself some proper meals. I like to keep track of my beloved Manchester City FC (soccer team) every Saturday/Sunday, stew in the bath and read a good book when I get chance. I like to read stuff by Stephen King, Clive Barker and Seb Hunter. I write music reviews/rants for Sleazegrinder.com too.

I always have loads of cleaning to do and have to wash all my clothes by hand, 'cause I still don't own a washing machine, so that takes up alot of time. I also go and visit family once every month for a weekend, but that usually bores the bubble-wrap outta me...

Besides visiting here, I also:
Contribute to another website where people can write captions to pictures from movies, television, and just about anything else.
Beta test games from online gaming sites to MMORPGs.
Play a couple of MMORPGs that are in release.
Occasionally still assist with some mental health rights cases.
Visit doctors a lot more than I care to visit.
Try to be a homemaker for my wife and daughters since I can't work due to my health.

Some of my best buddies in the Keys included:

A multimillionaire documentary film making couple who smuggled Haitians into Florida and let them camp on the grounds of their estate.

A homeless dwarf who sold balloons on the street - who was an attorney in the Nixon White House. He could prove it, too.

A German tennis player who spoke and understood almost no English - he was my main movie going buddy.

A French-Canadian carpenter who was also an illegal alien. He didn't really speak English either, and so often went with the German and me to the movies.

A toothless ex-drag queen.

A couple who raised and sold black market monitor lizards and tortoises.

A paraplegic woman who lived on a houseboat and made and sold cat toys.

A womanizing exhibitionist (he had a monstrous thing and liked showing it to people) who raised thousands of Siamese Fighting fish in his tiny apartment.

A motel manager who ran an illegal manatee petting operation.

Sounds like the characters in a Jimmy Buffett novel. All you need is somebody with an old seaplane.

As for me, I've got more interests than I have time. Building things would be the big one - computers, speakers, arcade controls, homebuilt CNC. I read a fair bit, used to be mostly old-school SF, but these days I lean toward horror and thrillers. I started studying the piano in January, and I'm learning pretty quickly.

I've also enjoyed singing, although usually never in front of anyone. That changed when I took the leap and joined the choir at church, also in January. It's a confidence builder, I get free voice training, I get to know people, and it's fun. Plus, I get extra music theory that complements the piano lessons (taught by the same guy). The hardest part of choir has been getting used to singing high enough for the bass part. The nicest thing is that I can hit notes on the bottom end that nobody else can.

I dabble in a bit of art. I've done some metal sculpture, mostly metal shapes for my big animated Christmas light display. Would dearly love to get a better welder, a real cutting torch and possibly some homebrew blacksmithing gear. We'll see what summer brings. I've also got the go-ahead to paint a mural at the local airport, as kind of a volunteer thing.

I'm also finding myself on committees planning community events, and taking an interest in promoting the community, particularly on the web. To that end, I've found myself at meetings pitching websites and trying to get funding for webcams, etc.

And, of course, I'm a stay-at-home dad, trying to instill some good habits in my daughter while encouraging her to try sports, music, art, etc., and teaching her some basic reading skills before the Ministry of Education get their hands on her next year. All this while keeping a clean house (which has required me to train myself to notice when it needs cleaning).

Unfortunately, I'm also extremely lazy, so it takes an effort to keep on top of it all.

Well, being in my final semester of college and trying to prove myself as a historian, I don't have as much free time for non-school stuff as I'd like, and a lot of that is filled with B-movie watching.

However, I manage to get in:

Roleplaying Games: I play Dungeons and Dragons once a week, and also run a campaign of Call of Cthulhu.

Painting: I paint miniatures (mostly for RPG purposes and as gifts these days, I don't have the money to try to get into wargaming) and model kits, though very infrequently.

Comic Books: Dark Horse's Conan the Barbarian comic is the only one I'm particularly loyal to.

Reading: Victorian Science Fiction (H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, etc.) and Pulp crime/mystery/horror/scifi/fantasy (Lovecraft, Howard, Hammett, etc.) mostly.

I'm big into organic gardening come spring time and summer.

I've always enjoyed going fishing ever since I could hold a fishing pole.

Along the lines of my review site which borders on the movie hobby, I love writing.

I read occasionally.  Mostly stuff on movies, comics and different magazines.  I'm a sucker for a library.

I enjoy going for walks in quiet areas.

I also enjoy spending time with my son.

Actually....I'm a collector. I collect old bottles,old magazines,books,some old toys.
I draw.
I used to LOVE to fish... but haven't in years...I think I gotta get back in the groove of fishing....
Usta hunt too. Just gave up on that. Tired of killing critters. Fish ain't critters. Fish is fish. Still own a 12 gauge, though. I LOVE to shoot!
I read...ALOT. I LOVE to read. I read EVERYTHING. If it's within my reach and has words printed on it...I'll read it. Weird thing is...I'm still a lousy speller and writer!  :buggedout:

I collect a lot of stuff and go to a lot of auctions. Main collections are coins, paper money, stamps and a lot of stuff the the 1920's and 1930's (Art Deco)
I work most of time when not working I have a variety of leisure time hobbies that change from month to month. From fishing and hurting to reading and model building to photography to just riding around on the Harley.
I grill, BBQ and smoke a lot of food. Nothing better than setting around the pit (big smoker) drinking beer and shooting the sh!t with friends to the wee hours of the night since smoking can take 12-18 hours.
I occasionally referee the local Roller Derby team too and do a lot of events.

Since I live on a farm I do all the farm things, gardens, crops, animals, tractors, etc.

Oh and I watch bad movies too and some might say I'm a tiny bit political.
Yes I'm very eclectic.

My main passion is being out in the desert. My wife and I spend a lot of time out in the brush Jeeping hiking, or on dirt bikes, exploring ghost towns, old homesteads, mines, and basically just enjoying the beauty. We usually take a couple of our dogs with us, as they are a good alarm system. We also do a lot of shooting, so I also spend a lot of evenings reloading for that hobby. In June, we have a 4 day off-roading trip through 3 states going along the north rim of the Grand Canyon, all without touching pavement (The Hills Have Eyes!). I also have a FOIA request in to the Air Force about a downed jet that I've been looking for for about 6 years. It should be in in the next month or so, so I'll be planning that little expedition soon.

I go to Punk/Hardcore concerts and volunteer at a community which I do Punk/HC shows and do the zine library. Love music try to listen to a lot of stuff. I read mostly Military History/Manuals, Magazines that keep me up to date on what happening in Punk (MRR, Profane Existence) or horror (Fangoria) and stuff that tires to reveal truths Like Peoples History of the United States or BlackWater.

I used to play lots of video games on console systems,RPGs most of the time, but it became to expensive with the new systems and games to I had to cut it out. Sam thing with comics.

I collected Statues/Busts of comic charaters, Marvel and DC most of the time, but again to much cash and takes up to much room.

It depends on which of the What if? games you play . . . and how many active teams you have.

Football probably has the most time-consuming initial set-up time because you need to set your offensive and defensive formations and tendencies for various downs and yardage situations.  But once the season is underway, you may only make minor adjustments.

Baseball can also be slightly time consuming depending on how often you tweak your pitching rotation or your batting order.

Hockey and basketball probably take the least amount of time.

I usually have anywhere from 3 to 20 teams active at any time (mostly baseball, with a smattering of football, hockey, and basketball).  I'd say I spend an average of 1 - 2 hours per day reviewing the box scores and tinkering with my teams.  If you played only 1 team at a time, you could do everything in just a few minutes.

They also have a series of "Dynasty" games.  I played baseball once and it was way too time consuming.  It uses fictitious players and you need to develop teams starting in the minor leagues (and I'm talking about 4 or 5 levels of minor league teams) all the way up to the major leagues.  You need to do a lot of coaching, bringing guys up from the minors, trading guys, putting guys on waivers . . . could be an hour or two per day for a single team.

I read dreadful horror and 60s-70s era gothic romances.

I am part of the local SCA. (Nerds beating each other with rattan sticks. Who would have thunk it?)

And I have no car, so I walk and ride my bike everywhere, except when I ride the bus, which is frightening enough to make me walk and ride my bike more.

A Medieval Day at a local museum featured a couple of presentations by SCA people, including one on how to make your own chain mail (I forget what the material was, either paper clips or heavy gauge electrical wire I suppose).

I walked out of that realizing that my geekiness definitely has limits.

I believe the SCA featured prominently in at least a couple of fantasy books: Marion Zimmer Bradley's "House between the Worlds" and another one I can't recall that featured an SCA tournament gone badly wrong when real sword play and magic use crept in.

These days, cope.   I just don't have much time in life for much.
Outside of family,  I do exercise when I can, I'm trying to get my Patent Agent liscence (by 2010 I HOPE), Anna and I like to work on the house and garden.  I read...light fiction mainly, and like PC gaming.  I'm currently indulging my inner nerd, long suppressed and catching up on comics.
I like a trip to the coast once in a while. And we like to flat-water kayaking in the summer.

I'm not into the Art and Sciences part, but there is something primal about putting on armor and doing your best to clonk someone with a stick. I was hooked. And my girlfriend makes a pleasant fuss about the bruises and cuts I end up with, although one has left what seems to be a permanent tender spot on my flank.

And, just to put this out in the world, I have a deep, deep dislike of Ms. Bradley. Her writing is fine, but I shall avoid her work on principle. We had personal issues over writing once, and she was a tad rude.  Maybe if I had been in SCA at the time....   :bouncegiggle:

I enjoy art.  I like to draw/take pictures. Use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.   Just today I was at the zoo with my sketch pad.
On that note, I like going to the zoo, aquariums, and museums.

I do take nature hikes and long walks (weather permiting) while listening to my ipod.

I like to read.  Mostly comics, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror.  But I've also been trying to expand my list with some historical fiction and mystery.

I like to learn.  I'm taking classes on Microsft Office applications.  I'm learning InDesign, Flash, and Dreamweaver on my own through books.  And I've got one of those teach yourself a language CD's.  (Polish) But, I haven't opened it yet.

Last year I took up fencing, which I love.  Currently I only know foil.  I want to move on to either epee or saber once I earn a rating.

Video games-I like fighting, action adventure, hack & slash, survival horror.

Let's see: I do a lot of reading (mostly sci-fi/fantasy, with some mysteries thrown in when I find one that sounds interesting), I make jewelry (hope to do more with this some day; I'd love to learn to cast my own silver/gold/brass/junk car metal pieces), I do some graphics work (though this is a side business, so I'm not sure it really counts here), I play euphonium and trumpet (among other instruments), and I surf (well, on the internet, at least  :tongueout:). Lately, I've also been getting back into woodworking a bit, building some small pieces for a massage room (I'm a MT), and I've really been enjoying that. I hope to be able to take a drawing class soon; I doubt I'll ever be any good, but I want to see if I can improve what pitiful skills I have, and I don't have the discipline to just get a book and teach myself.

I like heckling religious fanatics that come to my school and yell.

I was standing on a downtown street corner once, waiting for a bus. So I couldn't escape the street-corner preacher who was also there. He had quite an amazing volume, a big booming voice that needed no amplifiers to pound and pound on the ears of everyone there. Finally I turned to the guy next to me and murmured "I don't know where he gets the strength to yell like that". And he immediately started thundering, "GAWD GIVES HIM THE POWER..."

At that point I decided that actually I could find another corner to wait on.

Yeah they're really effective in getting people to listen to them  :bouncegiggle:.

Never engage those people in debate, they'll make up any crap they want. I just find stupid stuff to say "Should I eat angel-food cake instead of Devils Food?" or if they say "Love They Neighbour" it's always great to go on b***hing about how your neighbours p**s you off, how you hate their yappy little dog, and what you do to their yard when they aren't home.

I work a lot, but in my downtime, I rather enjoy:
Gaming, mainly for the PS2 and N64, and my Wii.  Right now, I'm enjoying a little dynasty I have going with my NHL 2005 game, where the Philadelphia Flyers won two straight Stanley Cup championships, and in their third season, are number 1 with about 20 wins, 1 loss and one tie.

Also, I enjoy going out to various clubs/bars, and doing the various things associated with them: drinking, meeting chicks, making out in the middle of the dance floor, etc.  Gotta love drunk and/or coked up whores who'll do that. :buggedout:

I wouldn't say I always enjoy it but for me cooking and grillilng are past times too.  I find there is nothing more relaxing grilling during the wintertime when its early evening and quiet.

I have several things I do on the side as well as watching B movies and movies in general.

Anime watching - I'm not going to talk a lot about this, but I do collect and watch anime as well read manga.

Die cast collection - A hobby I started to get more into a few years ago.  It started fairly small now I have about 50 or 60 die cast cars that I collect.  It's a hobby me and my dad share, and I have to keep an eye on my dad's collection since it's something I will inherit when he passes away.

Amateur programming - I do some simple programming on the side for fun.  Nothing really complex mainly just very simple math programs for younger kids so as to help them with their math skills.

Video Games - Been playing since I was a little kid, but I enjoy various types of video games across the board.  Just got a Xbox 360 so I'm pretty happy about that.

I race cars, play tennis, and fondle women, BUT! I have weekends off, and I am my own boss.

I am new to the whole "bad movie" business actually, but slowly coming round. Aside from that, I do watch a lot of TV (generally sci-fi and fantasy).

I also draw (several people I know want tattoos from me, which is ace), read and play on consoles. In summer weather, I practice devil sticks and poi.

Plus, I am forcing myself to work through my dislike of people and establishing a small but excellent network of friends, with which I play Guitar Heroes, Scrabble, wear wigs, face-paint, and laugh at things that other people would not find funny, such as typos, goose doctors and root-balled hairs on kitchen scourers.

Yes, I'm ashamed.

I think there's definitely going to be more shameful past-times out there - none spring to mind at the moment. but then, I am tired. I will give it some thought though and get back to you.

Incidentally, my comic tastes include Runaways and Young Avengers, X-Force and the latest Buffy and Angel comics (although I enjoy buying Angel more than I do reading it for some reason). Oh - I spend time on Facebook - that's pretty shameful right?

Agreed.
No good can come of Facebook.
Facebook is for posers, MySpace is where the cool folk hang....

Good grief, you'll be on Twitter next.

Shameful maybe but I stand by my membership. Can't I pose and be cool? I do draw the line at Twitter, Bebo and Stickam though.

I collect many things including old toys, historic photographs, magazines, TV supplements... if it's old, unusual or cool, and the price is right, I buy it.  I love my music, reading (these days, largely about music) and going to shows.  I have too many oak trees around my property to grow a proper garden (though I'd really enjoy that) but the trees do give me a good amount of yard work to do.     I socialize a lot (maybe too much) but consider myself blessed with many friends.  I do like to write, but don't much anymore except here on this website.  Though I love old TV shows, I watch almost no television (TV has become so boring.)  Of course, I like to watch movies, either on dvd, TCM or IFC, but rarely get to a theater to see any of the new ones.  I go out to dinner a lot, though pretty much hate it...  I should have been a restaurant critic!

Go to the comments section of a recent picture and leave "Rickson by Armbar" as a comment. You'll get all kinds of spastic comments in return. Some of the people that leave comments take themselves a little too serious.
