Title: What about your computer/network?
Post by: ghouck on March 08, 2009, 09:15:28 PM
What does everyone have? A laptop with dial-up? A cool gaming machine hooked to a cable modem? network? Here's mine:

I have a+ 1Mbit cable modem connected to a wired router. From there, I have a wireless access point, an Epson network printer, and a gigabit switch. From there, my desktop (Intel e6400/Radeon 1950xtx), a Tivo (80 hour with DVDburner, upgraded to 280+ hours), a Buffalo Linktheater media player, a Ziova Clearstream 505 Network Media Player, the kid's computer, a Wii, an Xbox 360, my server (With 4 - 500Gig drives on a raid 5 card), and a laptop are all connected, with the server controlled with RealVNC from my desktop. The server is mainly a media server for the two media players, but also is what I back the other computers up to. All my digital pictures are also stored on the Raid5 array, and are backed up weekly to a remote server (so if the place burns down, I'll still have all my pictures).

What's everyone have?

Here are my computer specs:

Processor Information:
    Vendor:  Authentic AMD
    Speed: 1800 Mhz

Windows Version:
    Windows XP (32 bit)

Video Card:
    Driver:  NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500

Sound card:
    Audio device: C-Media Wave Device

Memory:
    RAM:  1535 Mb

It's nothing fancy.  Just a middle of the road setup.  It's a home built system and I've swapped many components in and out of it over the years.  I've had the same tower/case since 2000.
One of these days I'm going to need to upgrade it again.  I'll probably buy a new motherboard, video card and processor. (AMD, of course)

I've got an E machines desktop computer.  It was the cheapest one they had at Best Buy the Sunday after my old computer died.  I imagine it has a processor, memory, and various cards  :teddyr:  Cable modem, the internet / cable TV company gave me that.  LCD monitor, probably 19".  Canon printer.

My two older kids both have shiny new Mac Books.  That's why dad has the cheapest computer he could find.

You should get a DUAL core processor, they tend to fight less  :bouncegiggle:

13" Macbook laptop which is now close to 3 years old. Cable modem.

Comcast has had the monopoly on high-speed internet & TV services for years, but Verizon is now marketing their FIOS services pretty heavily in my area. I'm debating making the switch as I could save at least $20 a month.
