2. The Astaire Rodger collection (both sets) 3. Singing in the Rain. 4. You were never Lovelier and you'll Never Get Rich (Fred's two with Rita Hayworth) 5. the rest of the big Astaire films; Silk Stockings, Daddy Long Legs, Holiday Inn (vastly superior to , and often confused with, White Christmas), Funny Face, The Band Wagon, Royal Wedding , Easter Parade, Broadway Melody of 1940 (with one of the best choreographed scenes in cinema) and the That's Entertainment films. 6. Cabaret 7. All that Jazz 8. Nightmare before Christmas 9.The rest of the Gene Kelly list; An American in Paris, The Pirate,Brigadoon,Invitation to the dance (which needs dvd release), On theTown, Take me out to the ball game. 10. Fantasia, if that counts. I think it does. 11. West Side Story, Lenny's filmed version of Candide, and the recently released (and long overdue) Leonard Bernstein's 'Mass' (which was Kurt Cobain's favorite, btw). 12. Wizard of Oz. 13. Star is Born (Judy Garland and James Mason, of course). 14. Yankee Doodle Dandee 15. Across the Universe (the best in 20 plus years). 16. Moulin Rouge. 17.James Whale's Show Boat. 18. Ken Russell's Tommy. 19. Yellow Submarine, Hard Day's Night and Magical Mystery Tour. 20. Jailhouse Rock, Loving You, and King Creole. 21. Going my way. Bing Crosby is vastly underrated these days. 22. Music Man & Victor/Victoria (Robert Preston is still missed and why, oh why, didn't someone film 'Mack and Mabel'?) 23. Rocky Horror Picture Show. Cinderella (with Lesley Ann Warren) 24. Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George (still in love with Bernadette Peters). 25. Blue Brothers. Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... "Across The Universe" was wonderfully trippy, and you didn't feel bad listening to redone Beatles tunes as they worked them into the context of the film. Very good stuff. Does "Cannibal: The Musical" count, cuz I gots that one!! :teddyr: :teddyr: :teddyr: :teddyr: :bouncegiggle: Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: HappyGilmore on March 12, 2009, 08:57:30 PM Don't know if these technically 'count', as they aren't in the mold of most people's view of 'musicals'. But I count them, as they do contain about 4-5 musical sequences throughout:
1.) South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut- Singing, dancing, the songs help the story 2.) Cannibal! The Musical 3.) Team America: World Police- Damn, Matt and Trey of South Park sure do love their musicals. Three of their movies have been musicals. 4.) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 5.) Pete's Dragon- Disney Classic. I think that's all of the 'musicals' I own. Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: JaseSF on March 12, 2009, 10:58:23 PM Me and my girlfriend like to watch musicals too and musical films too. We own the following:
Both Hairspray films The Rocky Horror Picture Show Grease Several Beach Party films Annie Saturday Night Fever Staying Alive Nightmare Before Christmas Singin' in the Rain Also really loved the rock opera in Forgetting Sarah Marshall...actually several cool and funny songs in that one. Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: dean on March 12, 2009, 11:52:35 PM Wow, musicals. I don't have all in my mind right now but I've got a fair few. To be fair to me I did do a subject at uni about Musicals [which was actually quite fun] so you gotta study up. A hint to single fellas studying a higher education: you've got a pretty good chance to pick up in a musicals subject: If you're gay there's going to be a few floating around the classes, and if you're straight the ratio of straight boys to straight girls is very much in your favour. This approach does not work quite as well in Women's Studies, but it works better than you may think. Though I had a girlfriend right through uni and couldn't capitalize on this, there were a few who did, and often.
Anyways, pretty much all the films by the South Park boys are musicals, such as Team America, Cannibal the Musical [duh] and Bigger Longer and Uncut, so there's that. Others include: Hedwig Both the Grease's Forbidden Zone [yeah that's a musical alright!] Meet The Feebles Nightmare Before Christmas Corpse Bride Both Hairsprays Singin' in the rain and various other classical musicals such as Anchors Aweigh etc [though the exact list escapes me right now, it's mainly a handful Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire flicks] American Astronaut [Rio Yeti!!!] And do some of the John Waters films count? I mean not in the strict classical sense of a musical, but Beneath The Valley of the Dolls certainly has plenty of music and montages. Certainly the boobies made me want to burst into song, and other things, at times. If they do count then from memory I think Crybaby has quite a bit of music going on. I'd also really like to include Blue Velvet just for that one crazy song. My girlfriend is a Doris Day fan, so we've got a fair few of those too, but they aren't MINE as such. :teddyr: Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: Jack on March 13, 2009, 07:50:00 AM Well, I've got Heavy Metal on VHS. That's pretty much the alpha and the omega of my interest in musicals. I've watched Pink Floyd's The Wall about 40 times back in my stoner days, but really doubt I would want to sit through it again. Maybe if I got some Vodka or something :teddyr:

Also, The Buffy musical episode (also in the above mentioned Top 100) and two musical episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess feature in the box sets I own. Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: wickednick on March 16, 2009, 01:40:09 AM I don't own any musicals but the only one's I like are the original Producers, Little Shop of Horrors, Blues Brothers, you think the South Park movie counts as a musical.
Lastly whats the criteria for a musical, generally I say if the movie has more than 2 songs that are sung its a musical. Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Lastly whats the criteria for a musical, generally I say if the movie has more than 2 songs that are sung its a musical. I'd say the criteria for a musical is that it has alot of music in it as a very dominant force in the film itself. It doesn't have to be musical numbers in it in the traditional classical musical sense like say Singin' in the Rain where all the characters are singing their thoughts and feelings out loud and dancing and whatnot. Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: The Burgomaster on March 16, 2009, 09:13:18 AM I just remembered I also have DR. DOLITTLE with Rex Harrison.
Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: Derf on March 16, 2009, 10:54:38 AM I said I'd forget some, and, indeed, I did, several of which have been mentioned since my first post in this thread:
Little Shop of Horrors Labyrinth Footloose Flashdance Mary Poppins My Fair Lady The Sound of Music (ech) The Muppet Movie (and the others as well) Young Frankenstein Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Phantom of the Paradise Rock 'n Roll Frankenstein 1776 and one that hasn't been mentioned yet, but that I know many here own: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (it's only a model) Oh, and if Wag can count the musical Buffy and Xena episodes, then I'll count the musical Hamlet episode of Gilligan's Island (a true classic if there ever was one!). And there's probably more that I've forgotten. Title: Re: What, if any, musicals do you own... Post by: AndyC on March 16, 2009, 04:06:53 PM If we're stretching definitions, I'd like to add The Wicker Man, with it's many folk songs. Among the most notable:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSvJgRSiJSM&feature=related Between the clothes and the hair and the goofy musical number, this guy reminds me of Benny Hill. When I watch this, I half expect him to launch into a verse about some woman's knickers. :teddyr: |
