Title: Badmovies.org Facebook Profile
Post by: Andrew on March 21, 2009, 07:11:09 PM
I started a profile page for the site, but really need to flesh it out.  I also need to learn what I am doing; HTML and PHP are no problem, but Facebook's click and do interface is going to take a little learning curve.  Still, I know that I'd hear it if I did not let everyone here know:

You actually broke down and started a Facebook page.  Cool!  I never thought you'd do something like that.

I've had a Facebook account for a while now and check it pretty much every day.
One thing about your page, though...
Instead of being able to add you as a friend, it just says, "Become a fan".
Not sure why it's that way.  Did you set it up differently?

Oh, one more thing.  You might want to avoid all the apps in Facebook.
As your friends list grows, you'll be inundated with app invites.  I get at least 5-10 per day and they drive me nuts!  Fortunately, you can block them if you want to.

I have thought about doing this for my site, I only use Facebook to chat with my wife while she is at work but I thought it would be fun to try out social networking to see what it does to the page hits.

I had to create an account to be a fan...so I did!

Nope.
I'm not joining Facebook. :hatred:

Sorry, folks, Facebook is a Doggett free zone.

I've got this site on MySpace and that's enough for me.

The page is a website page, so it is different than a regular Facebook profile.  I had to create a regular profile for me but that's just empty.  Wasn't planning on doing anything with it.

I'm having a problem with pushing Badmovies.org's RSS feed to the Facebook page.  It's making duplicate entries and changing dates.  Buggy.  Besides that, I need to figure out what applications are actually useful for the site.  Doing food fights or scavenger hunts doesn't seem like much good, but there should be some out there that I can use to do something.

The first thing that jumped to mind about Facebook is maybe using it for movie captions.  The post and comment setup seems well suited.

Thanks all, and by all means send some feedback.

Ah, Andrew, you've finally joined the Web 2.0 revolution!  (Or are we up to 2.1 now?  Do I need to upgrade?)  Next thing, you'll be tweeting or twittering or whatever the kids call it these days.

I'm kind of with Dogget.  I won't set up profiles on either Facebook or MySpace, but I do have accounts so I can view other people's profiles.  I'd be interested to see if you find it to be worthwhile promotion for the site in the long run.  It seems time intensive.  But good luck!

I finally set up a Facebook account, and I have joined the Badmovies one as a fan. I'm not really all that interested in spending hours every day on there like some do, but enough of my old college friends asked, so I finally gave in. I can see how it could be addicting, but I just don't have that much to say to the world at large.

Eh, facebook is a helpful tool but since I check the site regularly [unless my net is gone] it's probably not critical for me.  BUT publicity is no doubt good so the more the merrier!

Just stay away from the apps [they're useless for the most part] and use it for stalking potential lovers and friends you don't want to talk to directly but may know people you do...

I've become a fan.  I'm the one with the vat of eggs pointing contemptuously at the camera.  Yeah, you're next.

I never liked social network sites. Mostly because I don't have enough time to update them but once in a blue moon. Also cause I tell my youngest daughter that social network sites have spyware to keep her off them. She's too young to be on one but will try anyway if I don't watch her. I tell her the same about youtube but that is after she went to blaring Miley Cyrus videos once and I had to remove the speakers to make it go away.

Sorry for being out of the loop.

I did get a fun application started, and it needs additions, but I'm pretty happy with the start of the "Bad Movie Souvenirs" gifts list:

We got our son a set of computer speakers with a subwoofer.  Definitely one of the dumbest things I've ever done in my life  :bluesad:

I became a fan

My compartmentalised social life became slightly less so.

Andrew,

I was curious.  What is your reason for starting the Facebook page?

Also, about the Badmovies.org Myspace page...
My intention all along for that page was for it to be a portal to this site.  That's why I had asked you several times if it had brought anybody from there to here.
You had mentioned that you saw it as a fan page, but as it grew, more and more people believed that it was the official Badmovies.org presence on Myspace.  I haven't been keeping up on the blog lately because I've been so busy with classes.  Gonna have to get on that soon.
Hard to believe that page has been up for almost 3 years now.

Hey more exposure is all to the good.  Your work on the Myspace page is a phenom, Ash.  This doesn't cheapen it.

Part of it is certainly to try to get word out about the site, and also make it easier for people who do no use RSS or the email notification of updates to find out when the site is updated.

Have I not gotten word back to you about the MySpace page?  I am very thankful for how much work you put into it, and I know it's not easy.  I haven't had much time to do anything on the Facebook page besides the easy integration to display the RSS feed, and then starting the bad movie gifts application.  I start running into the problem that I have to take time from writing, answering email, and doing administration work on the site if I want to do anything else.
