Title: Shaky Camera Chase Scenes Post by: Mr. DS on April 01, 2009, 07:58:10 PM Ok I've had enough of this shaky nonsense as of right now. I just watched the opening of Quantum Of Solace and it literally is 5 minutes of camera shots filmed by, what it seems, a person having a seizure. What the hell is Hollywood thinking with this BS? Why can't a chase scene be clear and concisely shot? I watched the opening twice of this film and I swear I have no idea who is who at any given point? WTF!
How do you feel about shaky cameras? Any films out there you'd recommend avoiding if so? I've seen shaky cam done in a way which doesn't ruin the scene - Bourne Ultimatum, Saving Private Ryan and Gladiator are a few examples.
The worst example of it I have EVER seen is 30 Days of Night. It's so shaky I get headaches from watching it, and it's painfully obvious they do it in action sequences to cover up a lack of any real action construction. On the whole, while in some cases it is effective in illustrating the confusion of battle, I don't like it. Far too often it is used as a crutch. As if there's no thinking going on whatsoever. Whatever - I wasn't interested in seeing Quantum in the first place, and now I've written it off the list entirely.

It's like they glued a camera to an epileptic blind idiot with tourette's syndrome, and than they let a whole bunch of monkeys on speed with gardening scrissors to do the editing. You have to see it to understand. My words don't do justice. Shaky cam can be good, but they overuse it. Title: Re: Shaky Camera Chase Scenes Post by: Doc Daneeka on April 02, 2009, 05:01:54 PM I never see shaky-cam as entirely necessary (Though if not done profanely, and say, with only a few "minute" shakes, it doesn't really ruin anything). If a battle is confusing, then that can be shown through editing. With shaky-cam it just looks like some pathetic attempt to look "extreme". That kind of stuff is one of the biggies wrong with filmmaking today, IMO... :P
