Title: Britain is rubbish
Post by: Doggett on April 04, 2009, 01:13:29 PM
To show no hard feelings to ghouck, I'd like everyone to mock, point and laugh at how rubbish blighty is.*

Post links or random thoughts to how pathetic the little island is.

Stereotypes always welcome

1. Why are Brits so smug, they haven't done anything worthwhile in the last 200 years !

*I'm a Brit and I do like it here. It's just for a bit of silly fun. Just for fun. No actual hatred, please.

Is that sarcasm ?

I hope my fellow Brits aren't offended. I like Britain.

I think we're much better as a whole instead of being split up which is what the politicians want.

On a related note to both this and our buddy Mr Kyle - 5 - Bad talk shows/reality T.V!

This is a great topic! There does seem to have been a general idolisation/glorification of less than sensible social conduct spreading, I think, from the tabloid press through to television writers. They can't seem to represent everyday in a non-condescending manner.

No.10 - I'm not keen on our soap operas , especially the heavy hitter like "Coronation Street" and "Eastenders".
No.11 - The still prevalent obsession with class and snobbery.

The split thing worries me.
First of all the British flag looks better than the individual flags. It's just ...prettier, that's just personal taste, I suppose.

Devolution is gonna cause more problems than it solves. :bluesad:

I fully agree with you. You don't cut something off just because it's a little different, or because a small minority of people (politicians and Sean Connery)think they'll be better off.

Lots of parts of the UK are different, it doesn't mean you give 'em their own government !

I think when the Union Jack was drawn up, Walse had already been part of England for centuries so the "St George's Cross" (Red on white) simply stands for both nations.

But now Wales is a ...um, what is it ?
A principality or a country. The Welsh get kinda upset. I don't want to upset them like I did ghouck

Actually, I think Devolution has actually largely DECREASED the desire (relatively little as it has been) for Scottish/Welsh independence. It seems to have given a comfortable level of self-government while still retaining the benefits of belonging to a united country.

1) The attachment of BBC TV to 70's sitcoms like "Are you being served" and "the good life".  I swear the same damn shows have been on for the whole of my lifetime.

2) The conceit that they know something about fine wines and cuisine, yet they only drink plonk that comes from the Hypermart for 1 euro a bottle.  Or worse cordials made from flowers or some such nastyness. Or maybe thats just MY relatives.

Man, I must say I miss the place though.  5 years and counting since my last visit.

I'm Canadian, but I understand what you mean.

Benny Hill's humour is definitely old-fashioned, in the Vaudeville or Music Hall tradition. The laughs are often cheap, but they're also simple and plentiful. I remember it being one of the few shows my dad and I could both laugh heartily at.

What got me was how viciously Hill was attacked in the 80s, for reasons he never understood, then stripped of his TV show, which was really all he had. And it did lead to depression, drinking and overeating that killed him soon after. At the same time, he was considered the world's most popular comedian, thanks to foreign sales of his show. You can understand why it might have confused him a bit. Sure, he was an aging comedian with a dated, politically-incorrect shtick, but he was a sweet man by all accounts, and had a pretty amazing career overall. The guy deserved more respect than he got.

In contrast, the Americans treasured guys like the Three Stooges, Groucho Marx, Milton Berle, etc. right up to their deaths and afterward.

Canadians, on the other hand, have a huge amount of pride in any homegrown talent that succeeds outside Canada. We've got kind of a national inferiority complex. When the rest of the world notices us, we eat it up like we're starved for attention. We'd never knock down our beloved Canadian success stories, even if they suck (Nickelback, for example).

That's where we differ. I don't. I guess that's what I dislike too - you mentioned earlier that we reinstate the pedestal after death. It annoys me really as people in my life more important to me than Di, Jade, Jill Dando, Freddy Mercury, Heath Ledger etc have died, and yet the country acts as though no one has died until a celebrity dies. Yeah it's sad and all, but no more sad because of their celebrity status. I don't know celebrities personally so don't shed a tear.

What's worse though is that after I suffered a loss, I was not offered grief counselling or anything, yet it was offered to teenage girls when Take That split up.

Ok. Rant over. I'm all smiles now, see  :teddyr: :teddyr: :teddyr:

I don't remember because I care, I remember because ITV interrupted something I was watching with a news bulletin and it really annoyed me. I think I was in the middle of a film or something...

I remember where I was only because my best friend and I were going to an amusement park that day with a couple of British girls (one of them his future wife). They seemed a little annoyed that it didn't bother us as much as it did them. We did ourselves no favours by asking how it personally affected them.

Actually, over the next couple of days, both of us caught it a couple of times from the girls for being insensitive. Watching the mourners leaving mountains of flowers and cards, we naturally discussed the logistics of clearing it away afterward, and whether heavy equipment could be employed without offending anyone. And during the televised service, I might have noted that the floor in Westminster Abbey was butt-ugly. But my number-one offensive statement, the one that really got me in trouble, could be another reason why Britain is rubbish....

The British, all grief-stricken at Di's death, were busy buying up newspapers and tuning in to special broadcasts without once taking responsibility for causing her death by that very behaviour. If all her adoring fans hadn't been so intent on sticking their noses into her private life, she'd still be alive. And while these same people were blaming the paparazzi, they went right on buying the papers and staying glued to the TV, and not objecting in the least at the whole thing being turned into a big circus. If they really cared, they'd have turned away and allowed her at least a little privacy in death.

Needless to say, that opinion got me in some serious s**t at the time, but I still stand by it.

BENNY HILL is timeless.  BENNY HILL was a genius.  It's ironic that of all things, "THE BENNY HILL SHOW" would be considered offensive to the Brits who by comparison to Americans are quite liberal in their acceptance of suggestive material (like "ARE YOU BEING SERVED?")

But Benny Hill wasn't all that different. Yes, there was a lot of sex in his comedy, but it was done with an almost childlike innocence. Like schoolboys giggling about boobies and knickers. That style of comedy served him for 40 years or so. One of the problems for Hill was that while this came across when he was younger, it worked less as he aged. To people who didn't understand him, he started to look more like a dirty old man than a naughty boy. It's kind of ironic that while Hill's Angels are often cited as an example of the show at its worst, Hill was almost a surrogate father to some of those girls, and took an interest in their careers. Read Funny Peculiar: The True Story of Benny Hill. It's an interesting read, and quite enlightening.

Innuendos are fine, we just don't want it rubbed in our face.

You're a real fan of this.
The only thing I've seen Benny Hill in is The Italian Job, where he liked fat chicks.

Hill's Angels...um...no idea what/who they are.

In keeping with his burlesque roots, there was a period when Hill surrounded himself with a bevy of scantily clad beauties who combined titillating dance numbers with the comedy. As a teenage boy, I enjoyed it very much, but it made him a lightning rod for feminists in the 80s. Times changed, and Hill couldn't change with them.
