Title: Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Post by: Andrew on April 04, 2009, 02:44:31 PM
The musical chronicle of an East German glam rocker whose botched sex change operation left her not quite a he, nor a she.  Want a weird bit of trivia?  My wife loves this film.  She asked me to review it as a sort of present for her birthday.  Happy birthday!

A strong contender for the worst movie of all time.  This is one of those rare films that make me wish to cause great harm to anyone involved in the production.

You're a sick, sick man.  IFC was playing that piece of trash constantly a couple of years back, and I could not watch it for five minutes without wanting to barf.

Phyllis Stein. That is an interesting name, especially for an agent, and I can't help but think, the name is something of an in-joke.

Frankenstein, of course, but also the word philistine, which is defined as lacking in appreciation for art or culture.

I have seen far worse films but it doesn't forgive this film for being rather bad. A friend of mine happen to tell me what a great film this happen to be. I know now he was either lying to me, was really stoned when he seen it, or has no taste in films whatsoever.
While it doesn't evoke feelings of committing acts of violence against those responsible for it, I do feel they owe me the time back in my life for having watched it. I could of used that time watching something more intelligent like monkey poo fights at the zoo.

I haven't seen Hedwig, although a friend has recommended it to me before and I dig the music.   In spite of that, having seen literally no less than a thousand movies, and dozens of the positively worst movies ever made, I'm very cynical when someone declares a film "worst movie ever."  I have a Quaker's faith there are FAR worse movies than "Hedwig."

Andrew, as long as you're reviewing offbeat horror musicals/rock opera's, you should probably grant some review space to Phantom Of The Paradise and Big Meat Eater.

Oh, and not to shill or anything, but any and every b-lover worth the trash he watches should know: Howard The Duck somehow slipped past George Lucas' keen radar and was released on American DVD last month.  I am a VERY proud owner!

I have seen over a thousand movies myself, most of them bad, and I'm having trouble thinking of any that were significantly worse than Hedwig.  I would rather watch The Jar than Hedwig.  I would rather watch Headless Eyes than Hedwig.  I would rather watch Ron Jeremy doing obscene things with ground beef than watch Hedwig.

When someone who likes musical numbers and affirmative genderbending in their movies tells me that this was 'unwatchable' I'll listen to their case.

If you usually can't stand the stuff you have no one to blame but yourself for wasted time.

My parents (in their 50's) turned up at the cinema one night and this was playing - when asked if they should see it the 'human' behind the counter  told my parents that it was a great movie.

They walked out of the movie early on, and my father threatened physical violence against the guy who sold them the tickets.
They got their money back.

While "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" isn't the best movie ever made, or even the best musical ever, it is my all time favorite TG movie. I totally rocks. More than any other TS/TG themed movie. It so good, the title track from it,  "Angry Inch" was covered by Type O Negative, on the CD "Life Is Killing Me". If you don't like this movie, you don't like yourself. *

* University of Ga. research concludes:  Homophobes, are homos themselves. Read on...

Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?

Adams HE, Wright LW Jr, Lohr BA.

Department of Psychology, University of Georgia, Athens 30602-3013, USA.
Abstract

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

Wow! Very proud of you for giving this movie a decent rating. A few gay friends of mine dug it so much that I had to end up watching it. The Soundtrack is awesome! The story line is of course going to get some grief because too few people want to care about these poor souls that go through sex change operations or their troubles adapting. It's really sad actually but I'm sure this movie opened a few people's minds in a way... even if it was a hilarious take on the subject (Noting all the jokes she makes about herself, such as "...I had lost my job at the base px and I had lost my gag reflex...").

That sort of thing really does happen, botched sex changes and such... just like home abortions back when they were illegal. I wish everyone could be more understanding of these people's problems and not just say "Well they did it to themselves!" When they have no idea what they could be going through. But I guess man kind isn't done hating enough yet.

The fellow who made this movie and starred as Hedwig is actually pretty interesting. He also made "Shortbus" which is just as interesting as this one with a ridiculous amount of sex in it... you know, in a good way. And and and fun fact: He also played the Beefy Boy employee in "Freddy's Nightmares", I believe it was in episode #1 & #2.
