Title: Need Help Identifying A Vampire Film
Post by: Tenguzame on April 05, 2009, 04:50:23 PM
Sometime in the mid-seventies I saw a vampire film on tv that I have yet to see again, or figure out the title. It was in color, and made before 1977 which was the latest date that I would have seen it from where I was living at the time. I do not think it was a made for tve movie, and the production values made it very much like a standard '60s gothic vampire films. The time period from what I remember seems to be the 1800s.

Some of the details I remember:

The 'Hero' near the end walks down a long gated corridor where there are either tinkling chimes or chains, and is confronted by one of the main vampire's minions (I am not sure if this is a 'Dracula' picture). The minion is armed with a knife, and is dirty looking with dark hair, and ragged clothing. The fight ends with the minion impaled somehow on the gate, and swinging slowly on it. This part I can remember very well.

The end fight takes place either on the ramparts, or courtyard of a castle, and the main vampire is older looking. The hero is trying to save his love interest from the vampire, and the fight ends when the vampire is pushed backwards onto a stake. The vampire withers, and it seems all is over with. Our hero clutches his love, but soon discovers that she had been bitten by the vampire, and perishes a few moments after he does reduced to a skeleton. It ends with the hero crying over the body of his lost love.

That is all I can remember after some thirty odd years, and while at first I thought it was one of the Hammer films, I don't believe that it is. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you guys might have.

Been many moons since I've seen it...but perhaps the RETURN of COUNT YORGA?

Thanks, I thought that it might be one of the two Count Yorga films, but looking at the trailer I don't think so now. This film was more along the lines of the Lee/Cushing series in looks very atmospheric and gothic.

It may have been a European production, and as it was shown in the middle of the afternoon I don't think that it was a made for tv movie. I've also checked the Wikipedia article on Vampire films and so far cannot find a match. This one has had me stumped for years now.

RCMerchant your Lugosi quote is one of my favorite lines of dialogue in any film  :teddyr:

My guess is Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter (1974)

Scars of Dracula ended with Drac being burned to death by lightning.

I think it might be Captain Kronos.  The ending scene isn't on youtube as far as I can tell, but take a look at the trailers and clips and see if they look familiar.

Captain Cronos seems to be the right time period, and it was certainly made close to the time I saw it. I'll have to see if I can track it down to be sure. Its the ending that stuck with me, the hero went to all the trouble to save his love interest from the vampire, and she ends up dead anyways because he destroys it.

Whatever, the movie is, it isn't Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter.  That movie doesn't have the ending with the the hero's love interest dies.

I'm personally leaning toward one of the "Count Yorga" films.
