Title: Favorite Musicians-1960's
Post by: RCMerchant on April 19, 2009, 09:05:43 PM
A lotta different types of music came out in the sixties...late hangover's from the fifties,surf,garage,acid,hippy,...more than I can name. Any how.....What are your favorites?

Mine...
. STONES-They were great. SATISFACTION, SREET FIGHTING MAN, GIMME SHELTER...dam...everything.For me...the Stones were the anti-Beatles. Parents liked the lovable mop-tops (except my Dad...he liked Elvis and Johnny Cash)...the Stones...they broke barriers in the early 60's. Thet were Satan incarnate. Sex,drugs and Rock and Roll.
.the VENTURAS-My favorite surf instramental band.
.JIMI-No comment!
.SCREAMING LORD SUTCH-He invented horror rock. The Famous Monsters of Music!
.JAMES BROWN-EAH! Git on the good foot!
.JANIS-the woman had more heart in her little toe than most 'divas" now-a-days got in there whole familys!
.SRC-Michigan homies!
.the RATIONALS!-more homies!

Diana Ross and the Supremes - my folks used to have an 8-track of theirs that I'd listen to over and over and over.  Stop!  In the name of love...  Surprised I didn't drive them nuts.   :teddyr:  They were probably my first real introduction to music.

Steppenwolf - just good music.  Great variety in their stuff, very creative.

Helen Reddy - yeah, that "I Am Woman" song had a heck of a good beat to it  :teddyr:

The Beatles - loved a lot of their stuff.  It was an infatuation that passed pretty quickly though.

Jimi - what can I say?  Awesome.

I generally prefer 50's music over the stuff that came out in the 60's.  I do like some of the 60's garage stuff  -Dean Carter, Trashmen & a few others, and bands like the Ventures had some cool instrumentals, but most of my favorite 60's musicians are the ones that began in the 50's like Johnny Cash, Link Wray, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Howlin' Wolf, and the many doo wop groups that were still kickin' in the early 60's.

Rock: Beatles, Stones (although I like 70s Stones better than 60s), Dylan, The Velvet Undergound, Jefferson Airplane, King Crimson (only one album, but it was a doozy), Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Procol Harum, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Jazz: John Coltrane, Duke Ellington (still kicking around), Cannonball Adderly, Gene Ammons, Vince Gauraldi, Ray Barretto, Stan Getz! (the bossa nova sessions), Miles Davis (the 60s are my favorite period for Miles!)

Blues: Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins (still kicking around), Taj Mahal (just started his career in the last 60s)

And don't forget ENNIO MORRICONE, who did those amazing classic soundtracks in the 1960s!

JOHN LEE HOOKER!!! (not sure if he counts, I'm pretty sure he got his start in the '50s)
Pink Floyd (natch)
Can't think of many others, I'm not a huge '60s fan.

I forgot Brubeck too, mostly because I associate his stuff with the 50s, but he did a lot of great work in the 60s too!

I also forgot my beloved John Lee Hooker (thanks Voltron!)

I didn't include Pink FLoyd because I don't think they hit their stirde until the 70s (not a fan of the Syd era).

I should have added Led Zeppelin, because their 1969 album is by far my fave.

Zappa . . . Frank Zappa . . .

. . . and his boyhood pal, Captain Beefheart!  They both made music in the '60's that perplex, astonish, and amuse.

Eey!  I LOVE 60s girl groups like the Shangi las, Ronettes, and the Crystals!  I also really like Brenda Lee too although some people think she sounds too whiney.  And I like The Zombies a lot too - Colin Blunstone actually hit on my friend, who is my age, at a show that she went to a couple years ago - I was both creeped out and jealous.

I'm a little apprehensive to admit I like this stuff because the older fans get all into the history of it with Phil Spector and all this crazy trivia and I feel like I have to read books and do homework before I tell anyone.  That and I don't want to be confused with one of those turdy hipsters that listen to nothing but indi rock, 60s music, and nerdy alternative crap and act like they're better than me.

I just came across this song from 1965 on youtube.  I don't know if anyone else will appreciate it, but I think it rocks.  I almost wanna call it thrash doo wop.

The Kinks (I've been listening to them a LOT on cassette and online lately! I'll have to get some CDs!)

The Beatles

The Doors (I've only heard 2 cassettes and I want to hear a lot more!)

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (I've only heard Freak Out, but I want to hear much more!)

I realize that except for Blackbird none of these songs are from the 1960s.

.SCREAMING LORD SUTCH-He invented horror rock. The Famous Monsters of Music!

Actually, Screamin' Jay Hawkins invented horror rock in the 1950's. He used to perform "I Put a Spell on You" standing in front of a coffin, and then he would fall back into the coffin at the end.
