Title: Star Trek or Star Wars?
Post by: Ash on April 24, 2009, 04:29:51 PM
Most hardcore fans of Star Wars aren't into Star Trek.
Same goes for Trek fans.  A lot of them don't really care for Star Wars. (at least the ones I've met)

While I don't hate Star Wars, I cannot say that it is in any way better than Star Trek.
Star Trek and Star Wars are both pop cultural phenomenon around the world.
But I prefer the world of Starfleet and the Federation over the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire.  The Trek storylines and characters just seem to draw me in more than anything George Lucas has written.

Which do you prefer?

I don't get star trek.  It seems like a soap opera

I like 'em both...

But I'm going for Star Trek

I  don't care for Star Wars a all. As for Star Trek....the only Trek for me is the original 1960's series, with Spock,Kirk and the gang. More action, cheezy aliens...just more fun all around.

Star Wars all the way.

As far as I'm concerned, Star Trek began and ended with The Wrath of Khan.  I hate the rest of it.

I liked the first two or three Star Wars films, and I liked most of the Star Trek films that had the original series cast in them.  I liked the Star Trek series from the '60s, and the third season of Enterprise was pretty good as well.  So, based on quantity, I guess I'll have to go with Star Trek.

Enterprise ... good

Does not compute.

Star Wars.  I never did "get" Star Trek; the original series was OK, frequently campy, but I never could get into the Picard era or beyond at all.

Star Wars...by far.  I only catch Star Trek once and awhile.  Although I do admit I would love to kick George Lucas in the nuts for all his sins.

Ultimately, I chose NEITHER.

I LOATHE Star Wars with a passion.  In fact, I hated Star Wars (what little I could watch without falling asleep, as it was so boring) so much, that I've pretty much learned to not watch anything produced by Lucas, outside of Howard the Duck, as I have an odd fascination with it.

Star Trek is okay, but I'm not a big enough fan of it to warrant voting in it's favor.

I like them both but I'm gonna go with Star Wars. I don't think I'm as into them as I once was. Both franchises have made huge mistakes in the past years that have really made me loose faith in whatever they put out.

I would not be surprised if it turned out that the preference shows a correlation to which one you grew up with.  Impressionable years and all that.
Forced to choose, I choose Trek.  But I enjoy both for what they are.  They differ enough that they are bound to appeal to different tastes.

I like both but picked Star Wars. ST is great, but I haven't found any of the movies as appealing as SW, SW:ESB, and SW: ROTJ. I don't even consider episodes 1-3 to be a part of the franchise, nor the special editions. For ST though, I liked the original series alot, but I'm one of those that finds ST:TNG to be the best series of the franchise. DS9 I just couldn't get into, and ST:E, well that sucked, and i have seen every episode. As for movies, 1 was just ok, Wrath of Kahn was AWESOME. I couldn't stand SFS, the one with the whales was ok, the one where they shot god with photon torpedoes sucked, and some of the later ones were good, but not great. Generations was OK, First contact a little less so, Insurrection was really good IMO, and I haven't seen Nemesis. ST:V is another I never got into, at all. I tried a few times, but never lasted through even half an episode. I do have to say there's 10000x times as much hope for a future in ST than their is SW. If Lucas tries to "prequil" or "special addition" THX 1138, I will personally hunt him down with a harpoon. (And yes, I do own my own harpoon).

I would not be surprised if it turned out that the preference shows a correlation to which one you grew up with.  Impressionable years and all that.

I'm sure it does. SW came out when I was 8 and in 3rd grade. Back then, manhood was based on how many times you'd seen Star Wars, then by what action figures you owned.

Definitely Star Trek. I never could get why people were as into Star Wars as they were. I did watch every movie, but once apiece was enough (and more than enough for the prequel movies). I basically watched the last 3 just to fill in the story.

As a sci-fi fan from birth, I was appalled that the movie that made sci-fi mainstream was such a hokey, badly written piece of space opera, with princesses, knights and evil emperors, dialogue and plots straight out of Flash Gordon. But I suppose I'm grateful that it did make sci-fi mainstream. It probably opened the door to all those Philip K. Dick movies we've had since.

I loved Next Generation. I kind of resented them reviving the franchise at first, but soon came to accept Picard as a much better picture of what a captain would act like. Could happily have lived without Counselor Troi.

Star Trek gets my vote although I do enjoy both. Star Trek strikes me as being more genuine science fiction styles storytelling whereas Star Wars is much more in the realm of fantasy, magic and swashbuckling. That said, I greatly prefer the original Star Trek series and the original theatrical Star Wars Trilogy because indeed both were much more fun than the newer versions.

Somehow I knew you were going to say that, but then again, what Jem'Hadar would not?  :teddyr:

For me, I love both. I was 8 when Star Wars came out and it changed my life forever. I also remember watching Star Trek reruns in the 70's, so I loved that one as well. I am one of the few (maybe the only one) that enjoys every incarnation of either franchise...with the exception being that horrid SW holiday special.

Is this only in terms of the films? I think Star Wars wins out in other areas like games, comics and toys. Really it's like choosing between two different types of bacon... and well bacon is all good.  :teddyr:

I Liked Both STAR WARS And STAR TREK

Until Both Were Ruined!

I couldn't agree more. I'm not sure what happened but I think part of the reason they both went downhill is that the owners weren't as interested in fun/interesting/daring storytelling as they were in protecting their franchises. "They were more product than story now" to lamely paraphrase an old Jedi.

I picked Trek in the end because I really like the idea of a New Age of Exploration for humanity. The idea of placing the acquisition of knowledge over the acquisition of material gain as a way of saving humanity from itself (thanks vulcans & Rodenberry!) is appealing as well.
Plus, I'll never forgive Lucas for cutting  Han Solo's balls off like he did in ROTJ.   :hatred:

Galaxy Quest for the win!!!

Does that mean Space Balls is the best Star Wars film?

I like them both, although I do lean more toward Star Wars, especially after the Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager years. The original Trek was a fun show. I liked most of the movies with the original cast. But the franchise really started to take itself too seriously. It got all PC for a while, and the later series started getting too much of the soap opera crap and frankly, I just lost interest. Star Wars, on the other hand, was all about fun and adventure, and for those of us who didn't bother with any of the books or other non-movie Star Wars material, it was kind of frozen in time. The prequels fixed that, for sure. Still, for all their faults, I thought they were all right.

Hard to say, between original Trek and original Star Wars, it's almost too close to call. I like them both. Star Trek, as a whole, has been butchered more, but perhaps only because there's been more of it.

I think Star Trek at times has it's moments, fans certainly get more of it than Star Wars, what with the amount of series there has been, but I prefer the original Star Wars trilogy. Star Trek bores me quite a bit. Seems mostly alot of fake techinal jargon and maybe some angry hologram or alien pops up, only to be talked into submission or karate chopped by a jobber in a jumpsuit.

Maybe it's because I've actually seen the US Navy in action (not shooting action, but I've been on board active-duty ships & naval bases), but those scenes ring completely true for me. Well except for the part where an engineer says "if we just phase the gravitons to synchronize with the tachyon pulses we'll reverse time and cause your dinner to unburn itself". Those magical solutions from Geordi and Data always bugged me. Someone who saw some actual TNG scripts told me that they actually have [insert something technical here] or words to that effect in the working script in those places.

What I hated was that after all that, when a fight seems imminent, some BS deus-ex-machina solution comes along that allows them to resolve things peacefully. Whew! That was a close one. They almost had some real action. Aren't we all glad that was averted.

TNG at its most PC was painful to watch.

I'm rather late to this thread but I've been busy.

The old ST great, TNG not so great ... I liked it but it got to much into a group hug near the end this idealist universe where there is no money and every one does there thing for the good of the collective it was like they were the borg without the hardwiring. Troi was just annoying, Riker annoying, I liked "Q" and his trial of humanity, but he wasn't on enough to hold me to the show. The Borg became redundant and boring or is that borging? However if they were to put Beverly Crusher in a Princess Lei outfit when she was with Jabba the Hut I would have watched more often. Dr Crusher was the hot one, not Troi.

SW's will parts I liked and other parts I didn't it got goofy in the last 3, first 3 what ever there were. Jar Jar Binks was the most unnecessary character ever. It didn't have the grit that the first 3 (IV, V, VI) had with Yoda hoping around like he was on space speed or something. I watched all of them a few weeks ago, and while parts were WOW that's cool! Many of them were "yeah, right... no even in space, Lucus." I think Lucus tried to make "The Force" to much of a character like it was in the opening credits... but hey he'd made more money than I have so who I'm I to criticize.

So I chose neither...
Give me FarScape, Babylon 5, Firefly or even ST DS9 at least it was believable as far as emotions, greed, evil doers and personalities go.

I never got into DS9 that much, but I do agree that it was a little less naive in some ways. TNG got too infected with ol' Gene's PC, socialistlic, idealistic gobbledygook, and that managed to carry on longer than Gene himself. I will admit that currency does present something of a problem, when practically anything can be replicated. As a writer, you'd be pretty much stuck having either a degenerate society that gets whatever it wants for free, or a bunch of idealists willing do do almost any kind of work for personal satisfaction.

I will give DS9 credit for working around one part of the problem by coming up with non-replicatable latinum currency. But there is still the problem of what to spend it on. About the only thing wealth is good for is buying things that can't be replicated for one reason or another - slaves, real estate, really big things, certain substances. Or, like the Ferengi, possessing wealth primarily for the status wealth brings. But that gets back to the Roddenberry message of how evil and unenlightened it is to acquire wealth for its own sake (remember what a bunch of little rat bastards the Ferengi were in the beginning?).

For me its both the originals all the way. Although I did like enterpise a bit. The reason being is that Star Trek seems to lose its humanity in the next generation and voyager. As for star wars, well the originals were just better acted and writeen peroid.

I've seen the original Star Wars movies at least thirty times each. Star Trek is also really fun to watch, but I just prefer Star Wars. I do have Trekkie friends, but I'm the guy who carried a lightsaber on his belt during high school :teddyr:
