Title: They killed jumptheshark.com
Post by: AndyC on April 28, 2009, 10:36:11 PM
Just popped over to jumptheshark.com for the first time in a while, and....

Here, look for yourself.
http://www.jumptheshark.com

Apparently, TV Guide bought the site and launched their redesign in February. They paid a buttload of money to get their mitts on the URLs and killed the site. In its place is a really crappy entertainment blog that still uses a few of the JTS themes in the lamest manner possible. It's almost like a taunt to the people who used to enjoy the site. Is it just me, or is there something really perverse about buying a site that empowered viewers and poked fun at the entertainment industry, then filling it with mindless hype for some of the crappiest shows on TV?

Anyway, it was inevitable that someone would try to rebuild elsewhere, and http://www.bonethefish.com seems to be the best bet. I've been poking around there, voting, adding comments, etc. Nothing like callous corporate stupidity to put one in a helpful mood. Too bad "boned the fish" doesn't have quite the same ring as "jumped the shark" but TV Guide now owns that particular colloquialism. Sick.

Check it out: http://www.bonethefish.com

You can almost hear the people who run that sight:  "Just write your fluff pieces as normal, but try to include the word 'shark' somewhere."

Are we to never know a moment's respite from ruthless corporate infiltration?!

So, when did jumptheshark.com jump the shark?

Interesting story on how that website got its name. Apparently, on an episode of "Happy Days," Fonzie (Henry Winkler) jumped a shark tank on his motorcycle. And from that episode on, it was felt that the show went downhill. Or, so I heard.

An early internet sensation bites the dust.

But if you go to www.archive.org and do a search (the Way Back machine) you can get the old site content for the most part:
