Title: The Big, Huge, Scary List of Upcoming Sequels, Remakes, and Adapted Films
Post by: Joe the Destroyer on May 06, 2009, 04:23:56 PM
Rumored ones, too.

I only added to the list what was either on IMDb, or had some confirmed basis that I knew off.  Many of these projects could be bogus (and man, do I hope), and some of the rumored could be confirmed.  Either way, here is the fruit of my research:

*Hollywood remake of foreign film, most of which were made recently

I should also point out that there are a few errors in the page.  I've been fixing them as I go.

I thought the Evil Dead remake was changed to Evil Dead 4?  You got them both up there! What happened!?

The Evil Dead remake is still listed on IMDb, so it could be completely defunct.  I still have it on there just in case.

Joe, that is depressing.  If I were to coment on all the bad ideas there, I'd be sitting here typing until midnight.

Did you do all this research on your own?

For the most part.  I remembered a lot of these from conversations I've had with friends, and also from searching things on Google (typing in things like "upcoming comic movies," etc.), and double-checking on IMDb.  I think what spurred this was going to the movies last week, and seeing that every trailer in the theater was a sequel.  I mean every trailer.  Before that, every trailer was a remake or adaptation.

I would also like to note that Yahoo! reports the Deadpool movie to be confirmed, so I can move that over.

Long f'in list!

 :buggedout:

Good job though.  Now let's see. . .

Am I the only one who looked at "Captain Blood" and wondered if they were going to remake the non-Errol Flynn sequels, too?

It could be worse. This could be a adaptation of the old commodore/amiga game.

The Cowboy Bebop and Elfquest movies are news to me.

So long as Hollywood doesn't attempt a live action Reboot that could be fun.

Jason and the Argonauts: Kingdom of Hades?

Let's hope that's better than the sciffy original movie ODYSSEUS - VOYAGE TO THE UNDERWORLD (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-qzcELew6frWBZspks_7SsnUuv9VNTUA-?cq=1&p=342).  Also noteworthy is the fact there's two other entries in the IMDB listed simply as Odysseus: Odysseus (2010) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424825/) and Odysseus (2012) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1427271/).  Alas those links are fairly worthless as they're just a placeholder advert for joining IMDBPro at the moment.

*whistle*

That's a LOT of rumored Star Wars movies!

EDIT: And NONE of them have IMDB entries.  Yet something called Lego Star Wars does.  Hmm.

I can't believe The Sims rated a possible feature film yet Dungeon Keeper apparently has not.

The Star Wars films are 100% rumor, and I've heard that Lucas Arts denies 7-9, but you know they have to be thinking it what with Star Wars essentially becoming the Traci Lords of the film industry these days.

I agree with you, brother!

Knowing how things go, it'll have Will Ferrell and be a comedy or be based around some tween queen.

However, "Off Season", if they don't tone it down, might be fun, especially if they don't fill it with a bunch of fashion model types.

The Barbarella movie has apparently been scrapped.

Read all about it, and more, in Robert Rodriguez to direct Vaporware: The Movie (http://cosmic-cinema.blogspot.com/2009/05/robert-rodriguez-to-direct-vaporware.html). Don't forget to click on the highlighted links for more info.

The problem with big-budget remakes of low budget expliotation classics (Plan 9,Don't Look in the Basement)-with all there CGI and high tech FX....what makes these films so endearing IS there low budgets...and how the filmakers injected so much  imagination into it....enthusiasm...and true LOVE of what they were doing-THATS why Ed Woods films are remebered today....and countless other Z films fell into oblivion. It's heart that counts. You can't buy that.

CGI should be banned. it never quite works, especially in the 'gore' department

I had heard at one point of a sequel to Beetlejuice called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.  Kevin Smith told a story about being approached by Warner Bros. about possibly doing one of three movies with them: Superman Reborn (which became Returns a few years ago), Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, and a movie based off of an episode of The Outer Limits.

And must we have a sequel to Drop Dead Fred?  I loved the original as a kid, but damn.

Hmm.

I'm at this moment trying to decide if that's WORSE than a sequel or not.  Seeing as it's twenty years later, a remake is the best way to go, I suppose.

But RUSSELL BRAND?  That dude is an annoying little prick.

Joe, I used your list as the starting point for a blog post: http://366weirdmovies.com/weird-horizon-for-the-week-of-5809-with-ill-advised-hollywood-remake-supplement/.  I would be happy to edit the post to credit you for having done the original research if you like.

I would have cut and pasted the post here but it's just too painful to recreate the formatting and links.

Based on my own research, I decided that from your list the BATTLE ROYALE, DON'T LOOK NOW, METROPOLIS, OLDBOY and RE-ANIMATOR remakes appear to either have stalled or been scrapped.

No need to give me credit.   :tongueout:

I wouldn't be surprised either way about those movies being canceled.  Then again, speculation arose likewise over the Suspiria remake and The Thing whateveritsgoingtuhbe, not to mention the Dragon Ball movie.  It could also be likely that those movies will either disappear, or find a home with a new director and crew like the Godzilla remake did several times over.  There was even a rumor of a Suspiria anime at one point.  My theory as to why there are so many adapted ideas and sequels here is that the studios green light so many, only to can them within a few years or put them on the back burner.  My honest thought is that a good number of these upcoming films won't see the light of day.

I'm surprised there aren't any plans to remake the remake of Star Trek yet.  It's been 48 freakin' hours already.

Yes, just because a studio or someone buys the rights doesn't mean the movie gets made.  BATTLE ROYALE seemed ready to go but they put it on hold after the Virginia Tech shootings, and there's been no movement sense. Stuart Gordon was asked about the RE-ANIMATOR one and he said he hadn't heard anything about it, and after that the rumors stopped.  I ruled out the others because there hasn't been any movement on them in two years.  Of course, I didn't investigate every title on the list, just the ones that looked interesting to me.

Wow, I am literally blown away...If most of these films are being remade or getting sequels, I would not know whether to laugh or cry. Too bad, sequels often never to the originals justice. Remakes are usually not even worth watching. It's the sad truth, but somebody's gotta say it.

Add Jack the Giant Killer and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to that list, as well as Siren (I'm assuming it's based on the video game).  All three are in the hands of Sam Raimi as far as producer goes, so hopefully they won't be too bad.
