Title: 100 westerns
Post by: RCMerchant on May 07, 2009, 12:14:24 AM
We've had a lotta 'top' 100  lists. Westerns haven't been covered. I LOVE westerns. When I was a kid,me and my brothers yousta play 'Hopalong Cassadiy",because he was on channel 46 all the time. Granted-this was 1972-and very old reruns-but still-importantant movie memories. Hoppy was thee man.

My favorite Western,though....the GOOD the BAD and the Ugly. Hands down.
The score is enough to place it in the classic catagory. Tuko,Angel Eyes....and of course Clint the Squint's finest film. The epitome of cool.

1.the Good,the Bad,and the Ugly

So-what do you cnsider to be the BEST westerns?
I should've put this in the GOOD films section-except Hoppy's films were defintly of the B type....as were a lot of old John Wayne,Roy Rogers, and many other fine western memories-(like Hopalong Cassidy, of course!)
Westerns were considered,at their peak,to be 'programmmers' -sure fire draw ins-much like horror films and gangster movies. An important genre that is sadly lacking today.

2. "Django"

Another Spaghetti Western but one that took Leone's lead and twisted it into something a touch darker. I respect the American Westerns, but the Italians took away the moral compass and painted a more cynical image of the human soul.

4.  The Mercenary

One of the great spaghetti westerns.  This is Sergio Corbucci's best western, in my opinion, and it has one of Morricone's best scores.

I'm glad to see this thread was started off right! Spaghetti westerns are hands down the best westerns ever made.  I could easily fill up the rest of this list, but I'll hold back my enthusiasm.

I gotta agree about spahgetti westerns. So much more gritty...but the Spainish  film-

5. CUTTHROATS NINE

is an insane masacre of violence! (I should write copy for exploitation films  :tongueout:) I rented this in 1994 from a Mom and Pop video store....WOW!!!

This was a splatter/western!  Yee-haa!

Sadly, the VHS version of this thing is heavily edited from what I can find. But that trailer pretty much shows all the violence from the movie.  I'd love to see a restored, widescreen DVD release of this one.

I more than likely saw the cut version, then. I still enjoyed it...but that would account for some of the continuity problems in the version I saw. I need to see the uncut version! Thanx for the heads up!

12.  The Man who Shot Liberty Vallance-just saw this a couple of weeks ago.

13. Debately a Western but I'll say-The Valley of Gwangi.  Although Beast from Hoolow mountain was first and focused more on the Cowboys, rather than the dinosaurs, Gwangi is better.

17. My Darling Clementine -- A FANTASTIC movie about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday taking on the Clantons among other things.  This is actually the only John Ford film I've seen but it's one of my favorite movies.  Here's the trailer (sort of spoiler-ish towards the end):

Kudos to WingedSerpent for Valley of Gwangi.  I've loved that movie ever since seeing it on TV when I was a little kid.

I'm gonna steer this ship back in the right direction by adding another incredible spaghetti western.  This one's got Lee Van Cleef, my favorite spaghetti western actor, and possibly the best Morricone score ever.

18.  The Big Gundown (La Resa Dei Conti)

21.  UNFORGIVEN

A lot of people seem to hate this, but I think it was the perfect capper to Eastwood's westerns.

Haven't seen it yet but I do plan to.

THE OUTLAW JOSIE WALES (already mentioned) was also an interesting capper at the time to Eastwood's westerns (he directed it as well). I loved how he turns it around so the Indians are the good guys, holed up in the cabin holding off the cowboys who are attacking on the outside.

In the DVD extras they talk about how in 1976 it was a major achievement to get a western made, as it was basically considered dead as a genre. The traditional western pretty much was, but notice that the huge majority of what people have posted in this thread were made recently.

With that thought in mind, let me offer up 23. THE SHOOTIST, John Wayne's last movie.

I'm not sure how to classify this. Is this the first of the new non-traditional westerns, questioning all the assumptions and conventions of the old movies, or the last of the oldies? He's a gunfighter, but he's tired of the whole gunfighter thing. Ron Howard is the up and coming kid who wants to go up against him, but we're told that's a bad thing. And this one has James Stewart in it also, who as I already said always adds an element I love to any western.

38.  Day of Anger

This is another must-see spaghetti western.  It's got a gripping story and great suspense, fueled by an incredible music score by Riz Ortolani that manages to be in the same league as Morricone without imitating his style.  This one is Tonino Valerii's masterpiece.  I found the trailer on youtube, but it does not do this movie justice.  It pretty much paints the movie as being about Lee Van Cleef getting mad, setting some people on fire, and shooting the rest of them.  OK, I know that actually sounds pretty good, but that's not the story of this movie.  It is so much deeper than that.  The trailer doesn't even mention Giuliano Gemma, who is just as important in the film as Van Cleef.  Whoever made that trailer was a moron, so I'm not bothering to add it.  Watch the movie instead.

I left a comedy Western off of my post: The Villain with Kirk Douglas, Ann Margaret, Arnold Swartzenger, Mel Tillis and Paul Lynde.

I love the conversation between AH-Nold and M-m-mel. I saw Tillis in Branson MO at Christmas time and we see Swartzeneger on the news, and I can safely say this scene wouldn't be as funny today because both men have improved their speaking abillities.

I'd add these:

"Face to face" (Sergio Sollima, 1967) --> An spaghetti western starring Gian Maria Volonté and Tomás Milian, about a wimpy school teacher taken hostage by a bandit. It's a character study, because they eventually end up trading attitudes and philosophies, but it also has a terrific Morricone score and great action bits.

"Tepepa" (Giulio Petroni, 1968) --> IMHO, the best non-Leone spaghetti western ever. It involves an American rescuing a Mexican revolutionary from the gallows just to obtain revenge himself. Worth watching alone for seeing Orson Welles in a villainous role, but it also has a very clever script, rich in politics and irony, and great acting.

"The professionals" (Richard Brooks, 1966) --> Great western starring Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster. It has plenty of action, playing almost like a predecessor of "The dirty dozen", but the script is much better, with deeper characters and a few unexpected twists.

"Bite the bullet" (Richard Brooks, 1975) --> Not as good as the previous one, but still one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen. Plus it has Gene Hackman and James Coburn.

"Major Dundee" (Sam Peckinpah, 1965) --> This early Peckinpah film about an US Cavalry unit pursuing indian renegades well into Mexico is truly a mess, even in its restored encarnation, but there's plenty of stuff to like here, like the terrific performances by Charlton Heston and Richard Harris and the action scenes.

"Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" (Sam Peckinpah, 1973) --> Watch it expecting a conventional story and you'll end up cursing everyone involved. But if you're looking for a sometimes quirky, sometimes sloppy and sometimes moving story about how the west was lost and how best friends sometimes make worst enemies, go no further. Just try to get the 1988 or the 2005 restorations, the original theatrical cut sucks.

56.  Companeros

Another excellent Sergio Corbucci spaghetti western.  It's stylish, action packed, thought provoking, violent, crazy, extremely entertaining, and has a healthy dose of humor.  It also has a great Morricone score with one of the best movie theme songs ever. These great eurowesterns were so undervalued and under-rated when they were first released in the US, and oftentimes butchered to make them shorter.  Luckily the Anchor Bay DVD shows the complete film in all its glory.  As an example of the shoddy treatment these movies got when first released in the US, listen to how the guy mispronounces the name of the movie in the first trailer.

This spaghetti western has a strong eurohorror vibe to it, even though I wouldn't go as far as calling it a horror western.  Rumor has it that this film was the inspiration for Clint Eastwood's "High Plains Drifter," and there are enough similarities to indicate that it may be true, but this is a much better film in my opinion.

And this is not the only "Django" sequel / copycat worth watching. "10.000 dollari per un massacro" (Romolo Guerrieri, 1967) and "Django Kill - If You Live, Shoot!" (Giliuo Questi, 1967) are very interesting films in their own right, specially the second. Still, I wouldn't place this one over "High Plains Drifter".

66.  Blindman

This is a quirky, incredibly entertaining spaghetti western about a tough-as-nails blind man who is trying to rescue 50 women who have been sold to a bandit.  Tony Anthony is great, as usual, in the lead role.  It has a great music score that's like Morricone with sitar, lots of scantily-clad women, a great story, and is very well-made.  Definitely a must-see western.

This movie IS a western, regardless of what the pretentious trailer says.  Just look at the scenes the very same trailer shows, and listen to the spaghetti western style music from the film.  That's not a dream sequence, the whole movie is like that.  (If it walks like a duck.....)  In fact, I think the best way to watch this movie is to take it at face value as a whacked-out western.  It's a great movie when you watch it that way.  Trying to find some deeper meaning just takes all the fun out of it.

73. Ride the High Country -- This early Peckinpah films seemed kind of ordinary when I first started watching it but it's really quite special.  Not as brutal as say The Wild Bunch but packs a good punch.

The trailer is too cheesy and has some spoiler-ish elements, so I didn't post it.

Oh, God, the infamous soundtrack!  When I watched it I first thought, "It's not that bad..." it reminded me of the band Comus.  But the vocal bits started to get really grating after a while.  The music sans vocals is cool, though, and I do like the film.

Yeah it's amazing how the soundtrack can be so good and so bad at the same time.  I actually like the parts with the female vocals.  I think her voice has a strange and eerie quality to it that suits the film well.  The male vocals, on the other hand, are truly awful and I could do without them.  Still, Keoma is a great flick.

76.  Black Jack

This great but not so well known spaghetti western directed by Gianfranco Baldanello is a violent, gritty, dark, revenge tale with a great music score that has some cool organ parts.   The ending even has a touch of Edgar Allan Poe thrown in for good measure.  This one might be hard to find, but it's  worth seeking out.

"The cowboys" is a good one.

Save for "Cahill, US Marshall", I can't stand the string of cheap westerns the Duke made during that era, but with "The cowboys" you can tell they were trying for something very different.

an excellent spaghetti western directed by Tonino Valerii and starring Giuliano Gemma

82.  Get Mean

This is the only blatantly supernatural spaghetti western I have seen.  It actually reminds me a lot of "Army of Darkness."  Tony Anthony is great.  He's probably the most under-rated spaghetti western actor I can think of.  This movie has been under-rated too, mostly by people who don't get it, and people who don't appreciate weird westerns.

What about "McKenna's Gold"? It's not without flaws, specially a great supporting cast wasted, but it's lots of fun. It's about a sheriff (Gregory Peck) who accidentally finds out about a lost cannon of indian gold and is coerced by some bandits to led them there.

It has many things to like, from the cast, the Indiana Jones-like plot, the quirky visuals and the supernatural touches.

are we allowing modern westerns? films like 'bring me the head of alfredo garcia' or 'no country for old men'? or how about 'the proposition' (right time, but wrong side of the world)?

all three of those are great.

84.  The Forgotten Pistolero (AKA Gunman of Ave Maria)

Another fantastic spaghetti western directed by Ferdinando Baldi.  This one has a compelling story and an awesome music score by Roberto Pregadio.

85.  A Dollar Between The Teeth (aka Stranger in Town)

This is another great one starring Tony Anthony.  I believe it was the first spaghetti western he was in.  This one has a great music score, good performances by all, and a really cool scene where this hot S&M babe is kicking the crap out of Anthony, then he uses her fetish to his advantage to kill her.  It's very gritty, violent, and minimalist in the way that it tells the story without a lot of dialogue.

Great choice, Circus.

Speaking of "to-die-for," how about Nieves Navarro in...

87.  The Return of Ringo

Too bad you only get to see her for a second in the trailer.  This movie has a fantastic music score by Ennio Morricone, with one of the most haunting and memorable spaghetti western theme songs.  It's also a great revenge story with a solid cast featuring the excellent spaghetti western regulars Giuliano Gemma and Fernando Sancho.  And, of course, the incredibly stunning Nieves Navarro.
