Title: Wall-E
Post by: D-Man on June 18, 2009, 06:21:26 PM
This is a film that has been, in my mind, unfairly politicized by both the left and the right.  It's clearly not a film for everyone, and if you just didn't like it, I won't argue with you.  But, I get really tired of people on one side saying this movie is about saving the environment, and stopping humans from becoming lazy tubs of goo, and then people on the other side saying it's environmentalist propaganda and anti-consumer.

When I first watched Wall-E, I kept politics completely out of my mind.  What I saw, was a wonderful little little story about a lonely robot and his adventure with his new companion.  Plus, in the course of their journey, they help a few humans awaken from a world where they simply existed.

To me, the most amazing theme of this movie is that human-like robots (human-like in behavior) help the humans that created them rediscover their own humanity.  If you watch really closely, you'll see the message clearly.  The captain of the Axiom sums it up perfectly when he says "I don't want to survive...I want to LIVE!"  To me, that's not political...that's humanity talking.

Plus, those who watch the end credits, like I did, know that this is not an anti-technological film either, as some would claim.  It's telling us that there should be harmony between man and machine, working together to make our world a livable one, not just one side serving the other.

Most importantly, though, I came away from this movie with a big smile on my face.

There's certainly a pro-environment message and an anti-wasteful consumerism message...  But really, who thinks the natural environment is bad and that being wasteful is good (please, keep your jabs to yourself here people).  Some people seem to be willing to take just about anything as a deliberate insult to their beliefs and practices.

Good film, and some great script writing - it's very hard to write that amount of movie material without dialogue, believe me.

When Wall-E and EVE were flying with each other in space, it was so beautiful I almost cried.
