Title: Spam IP?
Post by: dean on July 20, 2009, 06:20:31 AM

I've been having trouble everynow and then with logging in.  Occasionally I get a message in red telling me 'sorry you can't reply or post on this forum because of spam from this IP range.

As far as I can tell I've only been using this laptop the last few months and haven't logged in elsewhere, but can anyone tell me why this might be happening?

I had such important things to contribute but couldn't because I was banned last night!

[Well no I had nothing too important too add, but still!]

HELP!

I narrowed the IP ban down some to try to avoid you, while keeping the spam-ridden section of that address space blocked.  Sorry for that.  You usually login from a 114.*.*.* network.  It was when you got a 120.*.*.* address that the IP ban blocked you.

Hmmm.  Strange!  Anyways thanks for the fix-up!

Got snared by the system again two or so nights ago.  :bluesad:

Though it has been no trouble other than that one time, so that's good.  Is my IP changing around alot?  Just for information's sake I haven't logged in on any other computer or used a different connection, but am using a USB 'Dongle' that connects to a wireless network.

You have to be getting an IP address in that blocked range when this comes up.  Unfortunately, your ISP must be using part of an address space that has been the source of a lot of spam posting.  I narrowed the block down as much as possible.  It sounds like the problem might be that the wireless network you are using is also the source of a lot of spam accounts.

Looks like I'll just have to wear it when it happens!  No biggie, I've been lurking mostly lately anyways.

I assume you could also try disconnecting from the network and logging back in to get a new IP address if you're desperate to post something.  Or you could try this procedure (http://www.wikihow.com/Refresh-Your-IP-Address-on-a-Windows-Computer) if you're on Windows.

Thanks Rev, usually I just leave it overnight and it generally rights itself, but if somebody has made me get all 'must posty' then I'll give it a try!
