Title: guilty pleasures?
Post by: 3mnkids on July 21, 2009, 11:19:40 AM
obviously bad movies is one but what about others? music, books, tv? what are some of yours?

Music~ little river band. 99% of what I listen to are bands like disturbed and slipknot so its odd to the people who know me that I cant get enough of the night owl and lonesome loser.

Books~ Dragonlance.. I know,  its not the best representation of fantasy but I like them. I mainly read other fantasy novels but once in awhile I gotta get my dragonlance fix.

TV~ Hells kitchen. I hate cooking shows and I despise reality shows but Gordon Ramsey calling people cows and cussing up a storm is strangely attractive to me.

ok, dont be shy.   :teddyr:

Music - Sappy (and sometimes crappy) 80s artists like Culture Club, George Michael and Breathe.

Books - I like Percy Jackson and The Olympians book series.

Food - I'm a sucker for sweets.  I pack fruit snacks (the ones they sell for kids) in every lunch.  I also stuff my face with Nerds, Runts, Twizlers and other things I should have given up 20 years ago.

TV - I'm a big fan of action cartoons from the 80s.  Stuff like He-Man, Thundarr, GI Joe, etc.  I can watch them with the same interest as I did back when I was a kid.  I also enjoy a lot of stuff my kid watches like Phineas And Ferb and Spongebob.

Music

* ABBA - In addition to the cds and DVDs I own, I've seen the play MAMMA MIA! twice (Boston and Las Vegas), saw the movie during its theatrical release, and even bought the DVD (ouch!)

* Crooners and lounge singers - Yup.  I've seen Engelbert Humperdinck, Wayne Newton, Tom Jones, and Paul Anka live in concert (multiple times for all of them except Tom Jones).  And I listen to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Vale, Al Martino, and guys like that on a regular basis.  They're a wonderful contrast to The Ramones, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, Elvis Costello, etc.

Movies

* Many musicals such as Singin' in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver!, etc.  And I've seen Grease and Xanadu far more often than the average mortal man.

Hmm, I actually like "What not to Wear" on TV.  I love seeing the "before" shots of how these people dress.  I like cartoons, but I really don't like anime much, aside from some classics.
Music wise. I really like techno-pop.   I dunno why, but i do.

Movies: I enjoy Cool World.

TV Shows: I enjoy many, MANY animes.  I really like Shin-Chan, Lucky Star, Cardcaptors, Shuffle, Azumanga Dioah, Comic Party, and Air Gear.

Manga: Even though the target audience is for girls, I really enjoy Hot Gimmick and Ghost Hunt.  I also like Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, I''S, and Pretty Face (Probably the funniest comic I ever read).

Movies: A Walk To Remember.  Total chick flick, but I gotta say, I totally love it.

TV: 90210- I know, I know.  Also: Power Rangers.

Music: New Kids on The Block, Spice Girls, any 'boy band' teen pop type of thing.

TV - Melrose Place.  Guess it's always been a dream of mine:  Move to Southern California where all the women are glamorous, and sleep with every single solitary one of them.

Why feel guilty about that?

Normally, I loathe the concept of the "guilty" pleasure, because I typically don't think there's any reason to feel guilty about something you enjoy. HOWEVER...

I have seen both Mean Girls and Georgia Rule and, god help me, I didn't think they were that bad. In fact, I downright liked Mean Girls.

::sob::

I have a problem!

I think I need to go to a 12-step program.

GOD HELP MEEEE!!!

Music- Bluegrass. I just like it. Sure it hillbilly folk music but I enjoy it all the same. In fact I actually bought an album by a group called Hayseed Dixie titled A Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC. I also love to listen to Johnny Cash. Normally I listen to hard rock and metal, yet I enjoy his music as well.

Food- Razzles. I love these. First they're a candy then they're a gum. I stock up on them several times a year to have at least one pack around.

Pets- Bunnies. I own a house bunny (no, not the Playboy kind) and I have always had a soft spot for them. I would rather own a rabbit than any other type of pet.

Man, there's absolutely no reason to feel guilty for enjoying bluegrass.  The musicianship is incredible.  You should feel superior to other people for being able to recognize the beauty in the music.  I know I do.

Literature: Sometimes I'll stumble onto a well-written fantasy book that is actually intended for a teen audience, then I have to chase down other stuff in the series. I call this my "adolescent girl" phase. I'm currently reading the "Maximum Ride" series by James Patterson and various things by Tamora Pierce.

Movies: OK, I admit it. There are a lot of chick flicks I like. We just went to see "All About Steve" in the theaters because my wife is a big Sandra Bullock fan, and it was surprisingly enjoyable.

Music: I liked The Carpenters. Still do. Kind of fell in love with Karen Carpenter's voice at a vulnerable age. I was so *#^@&* mad at her when she died young of #@%#^% ANOREXIA. Plus, er, ahem <blush> I was never much of a Rolling Stones fan. I like a couple of their songs but never saw the huge big deal with them.

My wife blames my musical tastes on growing up with AM Top 40 on the transistor radio while she was home listening to cool stuff on FM Album Rock.

Sitting in my station at work I have copies of the soundtracks to Reefer Madness (the showtime version of the musical), Sweeney Todd (the Depp version), Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, Rocky Horror, and Little Shop of Horrors. My only defense for this is that I have a repetitive job, and it helps to listen to something that has a story/images I can follow along with in my head (sort of like a radio show, I own the rob zombie produced version of the original Frankenstien soundtrack for the same reason).

Also, I'm told my interests in Ali Project and j-pop in general is something to be ashamed of.

But, you know what? I dont feel ashamed at all. I apologize for nothing! NOTHING!!!!!!!! BWA-HA-HAAAA!

I dug 'em too. There's a lot of random nonsensical b.s. and no-reason convolution (especially in the last one), I guess in an attempt to make things more "epic," but overall I still enjoyed 'em. They're like the contemporary (and, admittedly nowhere near as good) equivalent of Harryhausen's Sinbad pictures.

I'm too old to have developed a liking for hip-hop or rap on my own. And in fact I pretty much hate it. But I was forced to listen to a lot of it in the car when driving kids around and... well...

I kind of learned to like some stuff by the Beastie Boys, Will Smith, and Eve.

Rock n Roll High School Forever A movie so crappy on so many levels. Feldman is sooo into himself in this; bustin' MJ moves, skateboarding, singing Tutti Frutti and Dare Dreamer (a song he wrote!). Man this movie so awesome it makes my eyes bleed through tears of sobbing laughter. Woronov's in it too.

If you appreciate the hilarity that is Feldman, watch the Mr. Show ep. with The Josh Fenderman Story" in it.

I honestly am not a wine guy.  I've tried several and if I were to drink one wine it would be that one.

I prefer Sutter Cane.

Delicious white wine distilled straight from the tenebrous teat of the Old Ones themselves. Also, grapes!

If I go out for a drive on Sundays I put on the 80s channel on Sirius and pretend in my head that the recorded Top 40 countdown is the current countdown.

When I work the weekend, while traversing the halls I pretend in my head what would be the correct course of action if the place was filled with blood thirsty zombies.

I'm wierd... :bluesad:

That's not so weird.

The building we moved to this year is eight stories high and has underground passages with quite a few locked rooms that security doesn't seem to be able to find the keys for. It's quite a creepy building.  :buggedout: :buggedout:

When driving, if frustrated by the actions of other motorists, I vent my frustration by shouting in a faux-Schwartzenegger voice.  Usually it's a person turning too slowly, making me shout "GO GO GO GO GO! YOU CAN DOO EET!"

I like spending my Sundays applying maybelline products, wearing lace and generally looking like a slutty Madonna - circa 1985.

Does your pleasure hurt anyone? If not then there's no need for it to be guilty.

I'll admit that, when I'm truly, utterly bored, I'll go on Youtube and watch episodes of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. What can I say? I grew up with that show. It's got a lot of nostalgic value for me (and may have been a factor in why I love cornball entertainment today).

...wait, does it count as a guilty pleasure if you honestly don't care what other people think of you for indulging it once in a while? I guess it's more just a ...pleasure... for me, then.

It's okay. Despite what the internet thinks, you're allowed to like it. Besides, if you're on this forum you've probably seen worse movies.
