Title: Werewolf Quandary
Post by: Derf on August 07, 2009, 08:10:10 AM
I was driving this morning and noted that the full moon was up well past sunrise. The question popped into my head: Would a werewolf, cursed to turn into a wolf at the full moon, remain a wolf while the moon was out in daylight? Technically, the rays of the moon are still hitting the earth at this time; they are just overwhelmed by the sunlight. Does the sunlight negate the curse?

What do you folks think?

Well, moonlight is just reflected sunlight, so...I don't know  :teddyr: I would think that werewolves would turn back into humans at sunrise, otherwise, well, it would really play hell with their schedules.  It wouldn't be terribly scary to get attacked by a werewolf at 10:00 AM either.

It's about the tides more than the time I imagine :P

So werewolves turn with the tide?    :bouncegiggle:

...The moon does, hence, I think it's more about that (It's gravity and all) than it's actual reflecting properties >.>

Yes, but the tides aren't affected by the phase of the moon (full, waxing, gibbous, waning, etc.), but rather by the gravitational pull of the moon, which is constant, varying only by the position of the moon in the sky. Werewolves are only affected by the phase of the moon, not so much the gravity. I always thought that werewolves turned into wolves when struck by the rays of the full moon. Or is there a newer twist on the legend that an old gypsy like me is unaware of?

That's a good question Derf. I think The sunlight begins to weaken the curse.

How about this . . . a guy who is secretly a werewolf goes on a mission to the moon, turns into a werewolf, and stays that way for the entire mission.  This leads to wacky antics as he chases the other astronauts around in endless circles inside the space capsule.  Starring Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, running time 78 minutes.

Movies are fine, but if I had a REAL werewolf aiming for my body at ANY time of the day, I'd drop a load in my pants that would make Trevor's undies pale in comparison.

I think the werewolf would turn back as soon as enough sunlight hit it.

Unless you were a science-created werewolf-as in the WEREWOLF (1957)...

or by a crazy head shrink- as in I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF-

Thanks for the responses, all. A side question occurred to me this evening: If it's the rays of the full moon that turn a man into a wolf, would it be possible in this age of easy travel to avoid the curse by flying an airplane west and staying in the daylight during a full moon? In other words, could a cursed man chase the sun one or two days a month and thereby avoid the curse?

And no, I have no idea why I'm spending this much effort thinking about werewolves.

It really sounds like you got bit by a wolf and want to prepare ...  :twirl:

... am I right? ... When did it happen? Was it a full moon at the time?

You can run from the moon it is possable, but can't run from the curse.

Look, if worse comes to worse you can always get a job at House of Frightenstein.

If I were a werewolf, I'd probably be the kind you'd catch going through your garbage at 4:00 in the afternoon.

If i was a werewolf, I'd go around humping people's legs just for the fun of it.

That would make an awesome movie - then the plane would get delayed, and you'd have Werewolf on a Plane!

I would think you could just have an underground concrete vault built, with a thick steel door and a timer lock.  Just go in there a couple nights a month.  They did something similar on Dark Shadows, but the werewolf was a real whiner and wasn't happy with that perfectly workable solution.

You figured it out! Congrats! You'll now be the first person I track down and bite to pass on the curse.  :teddyr:

Actually, with the amount of body hair I have, I tell people I'm a werewolf that got stopped in mid-transformation.

Jack, I like the movie idea. "There's a mother*^*&%* werewolf on this mother*^*&% plane!"  :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

If I were a werewolf, people might notice a decline in squirrels, raccoons, possums, bunnies & other rodents around the neighborhood.

If I were a werewolf, I would be the kind who says "please" and "thank you" and "sorryyy"...  :twirl:

If I were a werewolf, everyone would be too intimidated to stop me from humping their legs.
