Post by: RCMerchant on August 09, 2009, 09:27:16 AM
When I was a little geek back in the 70's-I usta read comics. My favorites were SGT.FURY,KID COLT,CAPTAIN AMERICA,the SPIRIT,CREEPY,EERIE,VAMPIRELLA,DEVIL DINOSAUER,MISTER MACHINE,WHERE MONSTERS DWELL,MONSTERS ON THE PROWL-and I read just about everything elese. But anything drawn by Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko was a keeper.

the INVADERS was a great series-Cappy,Sub Mariener, and the original Human Torch fighting Narzis!

Will Eisner could draw wimmin! I think he is my biggest artistic influence.

For me, it's gotta be 2000AD. Although I haven't bought any in three years.

I still read She Hulk:

When I was a kid:

And I have a small collection of Harley Quinn and Catwoman (the older version, not the modern one).

One of my prized possessions when I was a kid in the 70s was a whole suitcase full of comics my mom got at a garage sell. Tons of superhero comics, Gold Key funnies, Classics Illustrated great stuff. I especially like the WWII comics SGT ROCK, THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, and WEIRD WAR TALES. The 1st comic I "collected" as it came out was Kirby's DEVIL DINOSAUR. This was the start of my collection that grew at one point to around 10,000 comics. I have since whittled it down to a more sensible 2,000

My single favorite series of all time is Sergio Aragones GROO THE WANDERER. Hilarious stories, and with amazing eye-catching detail in the drawings.

I was big into the underground B&W explosion of the 80s especially the horror comics, but still enjoyed stuff like Batman, Larry Hama's GI JOE, X-MEN, SPIDER-MAN. I pretty much stopped collecting in the mid-90s when all the multiple foil embossed gimmick covers started taking over, and the stories suffered in lieu of hot-shot artists making every panel a pin-up. The only things I buy now are some of Alan Moore's output, Hellboy, and anything that Sergio Aragones, or Berni Wrightson does.

Well you all basically know I read manga, but I have read a couple of comic books in my life.  Including these:

I had some Sad Sack comics ... my cousin gave me a few in the 80's. I always loved the ads.

I just read the first six issues of the Immortal Iron Fist.  The new one, I mean.  Good story, good writing.  Good stuff.  Probably the best recent thing from Marvel I've read in a long, long time..

Is it me, or are DC writers on the whole just a lot better than the Marvel writers?  I'm talking in the past like 5 or 6 years...  Sure seems like it.  Especially if you count Vertigo.

I've had some pretty nice collections . . . sold 'em on Ebay . . . bought 'em back . . . sold 'em again . . . it's a vicious cycle.  Along the way, I have been the proud owner of the following key issues:

* AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 (bought a copy, sold it, bought another, sold it) - also had a complete run up to about issue #200
* DAREDEVIL #1 (bought a copy, sold it, bought another, sold it)
* AVENGERS #1 (bought a copy, sold it, bought another, sold it) - also had a complete run up to about issue #150.
* TALES OF SUSPENSE #39 (1st appearance of IRON MAN) (bought a copy, sold it, bought another, sold it) - I had the complete run of Iron Man and later Captain America up to issue #99.  After that, they both got their own comics.
* IRON MAN #1 (bought a copy, sold it, bought another, sold it) - also had a complete run up to about issue #150.
* CAPTAIN AMERICA #100 (1st appearance of Captain America in his own magazine after he was in Tales of Suspense) (bought a copy, sold it, bought another, sold it)
* Huge runs of MARVEL TEAM-UP and MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE (including issue #1 of both)
* Many FANTASTIC FOUR COMICS (the lowest numbered issue I ever had was around #21)
* Many X-MEN comics (the lowest number I had was around #9, I believe)
* Almost a complete run of CAPTAIN MARVEL (including #1)

Plus some decent runs of a few DC titles (my biggest DC collection was JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA . . . mostly issues from the 1960s and 1970s)

I still have a box of comics sealed up in the basement somewhere. I think the bulk of them are Transformers from the first issue through to about thirty-something. Also a fair number of Hulk comics, some G.I. Joe, a few issues each of Avengers, Defenders, Fantastic Four, and come to think of it, a lot of Marvel Universe volumes. Most are from the mid to late 80s. And I might still have a stack of beat-up Richie Rich and Archie comics from when I was younger. My mom tended to buy me those.

I have roughly 12 long boxes or so at the moment, with more comics to be archived. I also left about 10 boxes at my parents' house when I moved out 10 years ago. God bless them, those boxes are still there.

I currently spend $20 or so a week. If you want to talk comics, I'll talk comics.

I also read The Goon.  It's a pretty funny book, if you like humor dark and wacky

Is it just me, or does Thor look like he's about to bash himself on the head?

Currently I love Capt. America, and I have developed an appreciation for Superman and the JLA.  I had to get over the idea that a boy scout hero is a bad thing.

I also love a lot of the "recent"  Ultimate Marvel stuff.   Ultimates 2 was jaw-dropping fun for me.

As a kid I loved  theArchie Goodwin edited Star Wars,
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__akmiKSkgAg/Sh7YiKJxfFI/AAAAAAAAAJk/ZUtqVctqkM0/s1600-h/1.jpg)

Sargent Rock, and strangely enough Richie Rich was a favorite of mine.

I rembember loving the gadgets and gimmicks in the books

I've got two huge trunks full of comics that date back to the 60s through to the early 90s. I was really into Marvel & DC years ago and my dad used to take me into Manchester city centre to the Arndale (the shopping precinct the IRA bombed - we luckily went the day before!) to the comic stores. I've got tons of old Hulk and Spiderman annuals, every issue of Ghost Rider, every 80s issue of Amazing Spiderman and every 80s issue of Batman. I've also got tons of 30th anniversary foil editions of stuff like Warlock, The Avengers and Silver Surfer. I had started compiling a list and trying to price them all but I kind of gave up.

I still have over 2000 comics from my old collecting days. Sadly most of 'em ain't really worth too much as most modern era comics (80s-now) are readily available and far from rare. My favourites and most cherished actually tend to be reprints of old comics (such as my EC Horror and Sci-Fi comics, my original Ghost Rider reprints, Marvel Milestones, etc.) along with stuff I generally found for 50 cents in a bookstore bin (Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis scripted Justice League comics, Legion of Super-Heroes, etc.) and stuff like The X-Files comics, The Simpsons comics, etc.. I did buy an awful lot of Batman, Superman, Flash and Green Lantern comics. I was even buying Wonder Woman at one point (guess I'm a big Justice League fan deep down) along with the ever-popular X-Men titles (which became so convoluted with titles it's largely the reason I gave up reading comics). Also used to collect Sandman (Gaiman) and Hellblazer from DC's Vertigo line.
