Free Manson 'family' members haunted by horror

LOS ANGELES – Forty years ago, they were kids. Vulnerable, alienated, running away from a world wracked by war and rebellion. They turned to a cult leader for love and wound up tied to a web of unimaginable evil.

They were part of Charles Manson's "Family" and now, on the brink of old age, they are the haunted.

"I never have a day go by that I don't think about it, especially about the victims," says Barbara Hoyt who was 17 the summer of the Sharon Tate-LaBianca murders. "I've long ago accepted the fact it will never go away."

The ones who aren't in prison are scattered across the country. Some live under assumed names to hide their past from friends and business associates. Some have undergone surgery to remove the "X" that Manson ordered them to carve on their foreheads, showing they were "X"ed out of society. Some live with endless regret...

You should read the book "Helter Skelter"  by Vincent Buguliosi, the prosecutor in the Manson case.

When they picked up Manson and the girls they were in the back of a pickup and the girls were laughing whispering and all Manson had to do was look at them to shut them up.  I believe he had total control of them.

Bugiliosi tells one story of being in the courtroom and noticing his watch had stopped.  He looked over and Manson was staring and smiling at him.  He doesn't claim the event to be supernatural, but just an example of the creepiness of the case.

I read Helter Skelter; a fascinating and horrific read, written like In Cold Blood, a "non-fiction novel". .  The TV film with STEVE RAILSBACK did a fine job of recreating the book.

Y'know, for the longest time, I had no interest in Manson whatsoever, despite my professed interest in true crime, ...until I actually saw footage from one of the guy's parole hearings. I have a bunch of 'em on tape. Hoooooooooly smokes. Listening to him talk is like listening to some kind of weird beatnik poetry jam from Bizarro World. It's awesome.

On the subject of Manson "family" members, I just read on CNN.com that Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme was released from Federal prison today. While not an active part of the LaBianca/Tate murders, Fromme was convicted for trying to assassinate then sitting president Gerald Ford in 1975.
