Title: Has anyone here seen a horrendous Whoopi Goldberg film called THE TELEPHONE?
Post by: Tristan on August 10, 2009, 08:09:21 PM
It's a real sick, horrible, stressful piece of crap that pretends to be some kind of weird comedy and then randomly turns into a grotesque psychological study. The main character talks to random people on her phone throughout the entire film, BUT there is a twist ending.

I think it was based on a stage play.  And, yes, it is a weird thing.

meQal and Joe: you guys ain't lived until you have beheld the horror that is Darrell Roodt's Sarafina (1991) with Ms Goldberg as a American accented township teacher during the 1976 Soweto Riots. I don't know if the movie is available on DVD, I hope not.  :buggedout:

I have a Starlog book with an interview with her in which she says "The Telephone read brilliantly but it was cockadoo on the screen."

To save me the trouble of finding and watching this apparent load of dung, can someone explain the twist?

I have seen that one and wished I had not as well. A local television station showed it back in February as part of their "Black History Month" celebration. They often run crappy films and at least one of them is some anti-Apartid film that often sucks. The upside to what is more often than not a white guilt series of films that they run is they toss  in at least one or two Blaxploitation films in the mix.

SPOILERS
Basically, the whole film is a series of her calling people on her phone and talking to them or prank phone calling people and basically doing imitations and, what pretty much amounts to, stand-up comedy. Eventually there's a scene where her lights go out and she starts freaking out like a crazy lady and the telephone man shows up out of nowhere to confiscate her phone. It is basically revealed that her phone has been unplugged for a really long time and that, throughout the entire film, she was talking to nobody. So her character turns out to be completely insane and she then proceeds to kill the telephone man and then sits back down and keeps talking on her phone. THE END.
END OF SPOILERS
My mom saw it in theaters. I saw it on TV. It's a terrible film.
