Title: Childhood Favourites
Post by: BoyScoutKevin on August 11, 2009, 06:11:47 PM
I was going to post this list on another thread on another board, but as that thread was inexplicablely closed, I thought I post the list here, as not to waste it. Thus, here are my favourite films, that I saw as a child. And, more or less, in the order in which I saw them . . .

Bambi (1957)
Roy Rogers
Trapeze
The Fly (1958)
The Sheepman
The Vikings
The Gunrunners
Have Rocket Will Travel
Hole in the Head
Son of Robin Hood
tom thumb
Operation Petticoat
Nikki, Wild Dog of the North
Snow White and the Three Stooges
Swiss Family Robinson
In Search of the Castaways

Of course, this list invariablely dates me, but at the risk of dating everyone else, what were your favourite films as a child?

Robin Hood (Disney), Return Of The Jedi, Poltergeist, Jaws, Gremlins, Muppet Movie, Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, Caddyshack

Theres more I know I'm forgetting but these came to mind first.

I wish I had seen Legend of Hell House in the theater, its my favorite haunted house movie.

Some of my favorites growing up

Robin Hood (Disney, 1st film I saw in the theater, the 2nd was King Kong (1976))
The Jungle Book
Star Wars
The Wizard Of Oz
Any Godzilla/kaiju related movie was always a treat
Bedknobs And Broomsticks
Golden Voyage Of Sinbad

The majority of the films I saw during the 70's were at the drive-in. Sadly there is only one left in Georgia where I live, but it has B-Movie festivals several times a year which is a plus.

Cleveland TV staples Big Chuck and Little John

I remember them, in fact, I remember them when it was "Hoolihan and Big Chuck", I believe Little John was a cameraman or a director.

Back then (late 70s, early 80s), they used to play "Silent Running" once a year, and would announce it a month or so ahead of time, and even have a contest to see who could make the best models of the robots. They used to play "The Abominable Dr Phibes" once a year also IIRC.

Thank-you for all the responses. I do think they show what a variety of films we enjoyed as children. As in my case, I think many of them cannot be defined as "children's films," but yet we all turned out to be normal. Well, on second thought, I'll exclude myself from the last sentence.

CARNIVAL OF SOULS
THE WIZARD OF OZ
THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
THE MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS

Ben Hur
Miracle on 34th Street
ANY Vincent Price movie.
The Seven faces of Dr Lao
The Man in the White Suit
The Great Escape
The Guns of Navarone
The Mummy (1932)
Hammer films!

Most of the 'kid' movies (and others) listed already came out *after* I was no longer a 'kid' - technically.  These are faves from my childhood.  I would sit and watch them whenever they came on.  Every time. (And a few more that don't come to mind right now: loved war movies, Tony Randall, David Niven and Alec Guinness. Not to mention Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi!)  The Wizard of Oz was a family tradition but I cannot claim any real affection for it.  Some scenes scared the spit out of me.  For a while there, all the family/kid films seemed to be about animals dying: like there was supposed to be drama and a life lesson in each one.  Hated those.  You guys don't know how good you have had it!

No VCR's back then: it was an *event* when a movie you enjoyed was on TV at a time when you were allowed to watch!  It was a real treat to stay up late with my dad to catch a bad movie.
