Title: Trevor's Afrikaans tutor
Post by: Trevor on September 07, 2009, 04:51:54 AM
Afrikaans is my second language ~ it has come a long way from being a language that was looked down as "the language of the oppressor" to a recognized language in South Africa today. It is a wonderfully expressive and expansive language too ~ you can use Afrikaans to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

Post a quote, phrase or word and I will translate it for you.

 :bouncegiggle:

Why didn't I see that one coming?

"Trevor se onderbroek ruik regtig kak."

BTW: the wonderfully descriptive word "kak" can also mean the word that begins with s.

Well, art is art. But then again, water is water. And east is east and west is west, and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce, they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.

Do you want that translated? Yikes..... here we go..............  :buggedout:

Kuns is kuns, maar water is ook water. En oos is oos en wes is wes en as jy aarbeie vat en hul kook soos appelsous,  smaak hulle net soos pruimdante, meer as hoe "rhubarb" smaak.

I dunno what the Afrikaans for rhubarb is, sorry.  :buggedout:

"Hoe veel hout kan 'n marmot gooi as 'n marmot hout kon gooi?"  :teddyr:
That is a thing of beauty.  Lyrical.  Brings a tear to the eye.  *sniff*

OK Trev, here's one:   "You da man"  (I plan to use this!)

"Jy's die man!" or "Ditsem, bliksem!"

In an intimate situation, the words "Wie's jou pappa?" [Who's your daddy?] can also be used.  :buggedout:
